  • Chop & drop mulch is a great way to slowly feed your soil, but when I started gardening I found the term a bit confusing. Do I use an axe? A cutting board? Where do I drop it? From how high?
You're probably much less confused than I was, but here's a quick how to guide just in case.

Thanks to my wonderful videographer husband for his camera and editing work, and also for building me most of these beds and trellises!

Chopping vegetable and fruit scraps in an old food processor works best for me. If I catch any snails and slugs crawling around, l would throw them into the blender! Extra protein.

Hi Ellsey, great looking garden, love the raised planters, can you please tell me more about the planters? I would love that set up without all the bending. Thanks

The raised beds are amazing - I love them! Easier on the back, but also just so lovely to walk through with everything growing around me. I ordered my beds unassembled from an Ontario company, but there are other companies in other places that offer similar things and some people will build their own out of wood or stone or a mix of metal and wood etc. When making your own, you have to be a bit careful re: structural integrity, especially if you live in a place where you can expect the soil to freeze/thaw throughout the year (expand/contract). There are things you can get away with for a 12 inch bed, that for a 30 inch bed made the same way make it fall apart! They're also more expensive to fill than a shorter bed. If you happen to have some bulky and cheap organic matter, like tree logs, that can help a lot - and also slow-release feed your garden from below for a long time! (Called hugelkultur)

@@ellseykaygardens Thanks for the information Ellsey. I have seen other like the standard galvanized troughs but I like the one you have since they are taller. Yes, I would definitely need to use the hugelkultur method as fillers.
