Good lecture. Helmholtz free energy functional is presented in this presentation, for isothermal thermodynamic process. Will internal energy be better to use for a non-isothermal case?

In solid state problems most always is Gibb's or Helmholtz free energy used. In the solidification problem many researchers tend to use entropy instead.

Check out the MOOSE Framework. It has a module for implementing phase field models (mooseframework.org/wiki/PhysicsModules/PhaseField/). There also is a website that compares open source community codes for phase field simulation (pages.nist.gov/chimad-phase-field/)
