Haydn is my favorite composer, this entire symphony is a masterpiece but the last two movements are totally on another level.

A most vivacious performance! In 1973 I took my O Level Music examination, for which I had studied this symphony as well as J. S. Bach's Double Violin Concerto, Mozart's "The Marriage Of Figaro" and Britten's "Four Sea Interludes". I got a Grade 3!

Dima is unbelievable. He is not generic. He is not afraid of brass or percussion. He adjusts the tempo to reflect his interpretation. I am so happy I found him.

This, for me, is the definitive version of this symphony. I have heard a good six or seven versions, some with the intensity of expression of this version, others with the exhilarating tempi, but this is the one I'll take most from. I'm lucky enough to be conducting this symphony in 2 months time - I'll definitely be using this as 'revision', so to speak!

Listening to some of the performances by this well-trained orchestra, I really feel it can respond to almost all the classical works as excellently as most of the major orchestras. This beautiful and lively performance of the last and most sophisticated symphony by Haydn is a good example thereof. Simply wonderful!

Haydn had the misfortune to live to a ripe old age while Mozart lives on because he died young and poor but none of these things have anything to do with the music of either composer.

    • @richrol58
      @richrol58 Před 3 lety

It wasn't just Mozart dying young but other aspects of his life that also fed his legend (and subsequent "über-popularity") like being a very "visible" childhood prodigy, his dislike of authority, his bawdy sense of humor (and if we're to believe the movie, his laugh), his female conquests (again, if we're to believe the movie)...

mozart commented on how free a performance must be. although this performance is nice, i wouldn't exactly call it free. in fact, except for moments in the 2nd movement, it is quite metronomical. i think it could be more expressive and freer. the wonderful end of the 2nd movement goes by without notice. too bad. the third movement comes off almost as beethovenian scherzo, in one. much too fast. and the ensemble in the 'trio' sucks because of the speed. i don't care what the current scholarly thinking is about performance practice in the 18th century. this is way too dry and fast for my taste.
