SegaSonic Popcorn Shop (セガソニック ポップコーンショップ SegaSonikku Poppukōn Shoppu?) is an arcade vending machine released in 1993, exclusively in Japan. Created by Sega AM1 and released by Sega, it is a combination of a popcorn machine and a mini-game on Sega's C-2 board, a hardware similar to the one on the Sega Genesis. The vending machine dispenses popcorn in one of three flavors: salted, butter or curry.
The small screen of the vending machine also features a mini-game, starring Sonic and Tails, who assist in making popcorn while Dr. Eggman tries to ruin the event. While the mini-game is being played, the actual popcorn is being microwaved in a nearby compartment. Like in many early Sonic-related arcade games, Takeshi Kusao and Masaharu Satō provided the voices of Sonic and Dr. Eggman. - Hry

Teddycus the wild mouse It's the same person. Eggman it's actually his true name. Dr Robotnik it's only his name by be localised outside of Japan.

Midoseito Akage Ivo Robotnik is his true name and Eggman is just a "nickname" Sonic uses to insult him.
That was his walk animation in Sonic 1 and Sonic 2.

Guy Asking for Assistance: Um, yeah. I was trying to get some popcorn and then Eggman was chasing Tails, Sonic is saying gibberish and the place is exploding and I think I'm seeing things. Please help.
It looks like earthbound with the waves.
But this was a nice thing (before?) being able to afford a Sega and a microwave. You'd go up to a machine, insert a coin, push a button, do a minigame which is exactly the amount of time it takes to fill up the microwave compartment, microwave the popcorn (probably when the oven part starts), prepare the bucket and to fill the popcorn into a bucket. Would be interesting to bring back, with more flavors.
And with proper microwaving, and with more minigames, since our patience has improved, especially with the patience until sustenance.
Probably died when portable devices and gas station "cafeterias" evolved.

It's meant to portray the fact that something went wrong with the machine, itself. It's been animated the way it's been done in order to portray fire without actually making sprites for it, on screen.

I remember that, one of the only secret stages in a StarFox game. God, I miss that series...
In my humble opinion, Sega of America should have released this in movie theaters and Chuck E. Cheese's stores all across North America. The demographic of toddlers, preschoolers, and kindergartners would have eaten this game up, popcorn and figuratively speaking. The only editing they would have needed to do is dub Sonic and Eggman's voice over in English (possibly using the voices of Jaleel White as Sonic and Long John Baldry or Jim Cummings as Eggman respectively), and they would have to have edited out the fire going off in Eggman's face so little kids don't try to set themselves on fire.
If 90s kids can handle Daffy Duck getting blasted in the face, or Ren slapping Stimpy constantly, I wouldn't really about kids doing that.
But I agree, it would of been cool if Sega of America distributed these in the USA. They would probably have to replace the third "curry" popcorn flavor with something else, because curry isn't very popular in America, nor with American kids. (Though, Japanese curry is delicious. Try the curry Nissan ramen from Walmart, and you'll see.)

I would love to see not only a subtle reference to this, but a zone called "Popcorn machine zone" where there could be mechanics like popcorn for platforms, and maybe the boss could be hammer related.

Sonic doesn't sound the same without Junichi voicing him but the actor they chose seems good enough. Too bad I'm not fluent in Japanese yet but I am learning it.

@@sillydog In fairness, Americans have made creative things like that too. (Like those gumball machines with those crazy sliding dispensers, and such where you get to watch the gumball go through all these tubes and gimmicks.) The thing is, gimmicky arcade food dispensers like that just aren't very popular in America, but I think some American kids would of loved it, seeing as Sonic was ridiculously popular in 1993/94.
(To the point in surveys, more kids knew who Sonic was then Mickey Mouse.)

do you get the "please ask for assistance" by disconnecting the controls or by doing something with the popcorn
in the game, you turn the wheel thingy to help sonic
if you do nothing, it'll spin by itself
but if it doesn't, the ask for assistance happens
But the drawback is if you don't do the first part, you suddenly need to do a second part.

Yes. The system is activated by cranking, so nothing will happen if you leave.

This was run on a emulator running the game. Since it was being run on a PC and not an original cabinet like the original game, the person playing it would have not got any popcorn unless he found the original machine, which are very obscure in Japan.
