For most people minibus taxis are the only option - paranoid or not. They are just pieces of meat bringing in money.
We once went from a conference in Franschhoek in “chartered” minibus taxis, and that was an absolute horrific experience. When we got to Cape Town International Airport, the taxi was cleared from all passengers and luggage in under 2 minutes, and he was gone again.

You said you are taking a taxi. But you hired a whole taxi. You do know what it means in South Africa when you say I will take a taxi?
And how do you know this? Assumptions I suppose. I didn't hire a whole taxi dude. I got picked up like anybody else standing next to the road. If I had money to hire a whole taxi I would have my own vehicle. Don't assume things if you don't know anything. I have been taking minibus taxis for 20 years. I know more than most.
