The plot wasn't just about killing Hitler. Stauffenberg and the plotters also wanted to take over Germany and end the war.
A more recent Mythbusters episode did a test that showed, even if the meeting had been held in the concrete bunker as planned, the explosive amount was not strong enough to kill just by overpressure. As proved to be the case it would need to go off very close to the target.
There was supposed to be a second explosive that Staffanberg wasn't able to prime due to his condition.
