- Today’s metal detecting adventure concludes the story of the virgin cellar that I searched for months! On this last hunt at the cellar (for now), I found a beautiful 300+ year old coin, along with the usual relics we expect to find at cellar holes from the 1700s, and… the BEST FIND I’ve made at this site was unearthed! This is one of those finds we dream of as kids. The original occupant of the home was a French and Indian War veteran, and it’s safe to say that he brought home a souvenir from the battlefield. Love that canister shot! I found a blob of rust that I had no idea what is was and put it through electrolysis. Turned out to be a lock from a flintlock or percussion cap gun, but it was left facing? Turned out to be the left side lock from a double barrell shotgun. Went back later to the exact same spot and found a lock mainspring vise tool and other "tool shed" type items.
That’s really cool! Never know what’s hiding in those iron concretions - just had a good feeling about that one!

That iron ball could’ve also been shot from a blunderbuss. A single shot was between 1.5 to 2”. Excellent find!

Congrats on the grape shot. I found a cannon ball in a small creek. It was encrusted also with rocks and rust. I got home and dropped it on the concrete. Most of the shell broke off. Then I did some research and found out it could have been explosive 12lb ball. I could have been the last casualty of the civil war! Lol not really but was still a cool find. The weird thing was it was by a school. No idea why it would have been there. Searched the farm next to it and didn’t find any military relics but found bunch of buttons couple large cent and capped bust half dime.
I use a ultimate finds box now. The ultimate finds box is very nice and worth the money. Some items won’t fit in it but coins and buttons are perfect for it.
It’s so strange where things end up! I kept picking away at mine and noticing all of the quartz and other rocks mixed in with the iron. Eventually I got fed up and cracked it open, obviously. 😂

I'm a day late, but I am so happy not to have missed this. The KG I is pretty darned good, and nice to know it is from the period of the known landowner. The shot is probably the most rare find of the day;several years ago in certain areas of the south, Civil War projectiles were common finds. I really like the knee buckle fragment, very fancy. Normally, I do not enter myself in a giveaway, thinking that someone may need or want it more, However, this time I will enter with the idea if won, the ULTIMATE FINDS BOX will go to my granddaughter. She loves detecting!
