  • Richardson father risks freedom to promote cannabis treatments for his daughter
A few times a month, Mark Zartler of Richardson, Texas commits a crime that helps his daughter who cannot help herself.
17 years ago, Christy Zartler gave birth to twin girls.
"When they came home, Keeley, her twin, came home first," said Christy. "Three days Kara followed her."
From there, they began the difficult, years-long task of learning how to treat Kara’s Cerebral Palsy and severe Autism. There are a slew of her pills on their kitchen counter. Antipsychotics and enzymes and sleep aids. Still, few things helped fight off the worst of her symptoms.
A neighbor first suggested years ago that cannabis could ease Kara’s symptoms. Mark then found that by grinding marijuana buds, and heating them to 410 degrees Fahrenheit, it created the vapor that serves as an immediate rescue response to his daughter’s most violent behavior.

Agreed, it needs to stop by both the government and the user. I have no doubt that cannabis is an effective treatment for several illnesses and disorders, I also have no problem with people using it recreationally. What I have a problem with is users thinking its the cure-all and the answer to everything, what I have a problem with is that recreational users seem to think its okay get high while driving, use terminally ill patients as leverage to get high. What I have a problem with is my neighbor sitting in his backyard thinking its funny to stand at the fence while getting high while I have 15 grade school kids over for my sons birthday and blowing smoke into my backyard. And when I ask him to stop he tells me "they have to learn it sometime" Here in CA it's legal across the board, and within minutes of it becoming legal it was already being abused by recreational users. The very first day it became legal there was a fatal accident on the onramp of I-80 heading in SF from American Canyon. Did the user die? Of course not, the mother of three heading to work did. It isn't the everyday non user that demonizes it, its the user. Use it responsibly and there won't be a problem.

“The law isn’t going to change unless somebody gambles.”
    That’s an incredibly moving statement.
*edit 09/15/2021: Whoa, I didn't sany anything particularly profound. Didn't know this would generate this many likes.
    Incidentally, I'm a lawyer.
...And yes, it takes bravery to fight against "the system." I've had to warn many people about moving forward with their suits, whether in criminal defense or in a civil matter. Sure, lawsuits sound romantic, but when you're in the middle of one, the whole tone changes. It's hectic, confusing, and things seem to constantly move both quickly and slowly at once.
When somebody gambles to change the law, others benefit from that person's bravery. Typically, people just don't want to antagonize the system because resources aren't infinite. By the time you "make it" in the world, you're likely going to fall into that mode of thinking of how best to preserve what you've struggled so hard to accumulate: your home, your business, your job, the wife and kids anda nice suburban existence. I guarantee you, most people in that position are not looking to rock boats. It takes principle and gumption to poke the bear of "the system" I spoke of above.
Lawyers know that system and most of them are part of it. Heck, I'm part of it to some degree. I know that for some clients what offer the prosecutor might offer based on his criminal history. I'd wager that lawyers try and even calculate what a reasonable plea deal might be based on factors like race and the voir dire process in jury selection. Oh, and let's not forget income and having "connections."
It's as rotten as they say it is. Even otherwise honest people get tired and worn out trying to preserve their dignity and principles.
But when a family member's life is on the line -- well, I've seen people take on tasks they would have never faced before. I don't know what most of society would call that. Some people call it crazy. Other's call it a crazy gamble.
Yet others would call it "love." And who am I to argue against that.

Update: When Mark Zartler posted the now viral video of treating his daughter with cannabis, Child Protective services showed up to their doorstep under the notion that the treatment was a form of child abuse. Luckily the judge overseeing the case weighed all of the evidence and decided that she was not being abused and that it was in Kara’s best interest that she stay with her parents as her guardians.
From what I understand, under the compassionate use law, Kara's parents would first have to work through all of the legal pharmaceuticals and then 2 doctors would have to agree that all of those treatments are ineffective before she could be prescribed cbd. Even then, the legal amount that she would be allowed to take would be so small that it would have no effect on her symptoms.
Legally, what her father is doing is considered a felony punishable by 2 yrs. to life. Kara's parents are still trying to change legislation.

If these parents lived in Arizona and CPS showed up their poor daughter would have been taken away from them, put in foster care for years and CPS likely would have severed their parental rights.... After years of abusing the child and the parents of course. After the abuse of this disabled child would have lasted for the rest of her life.... They're lucky they don't live in Arizona. Clearly cannabis is not harming their daughter and they should be able to use it however they see fit.

I understand that multiple states are legalizing it now, and that it awesome, but I feel bad for people that were arrested for being in possession, even if they hadn't been doing anything immoral or wrong.

      There's a hero
If you look inside your heart
You don't have to be afraid
      Of what you are
      There's an answer
If you reach into your soul
And the sorrow that you know
      Will melt away
And then a hero comes along
With the strength to carry on
And you cast your fears aside

      It's a long road
When you face the world alone
No one reaches out a hand
      For you to hold
      You can find love
      If you search within yourself
      And that emptiness you felt

For everyone one person who would judge harshly because they don't understand, there are likely dozens and dozens more who do understand. While I don't have to care for anyone in my life, I have friends who do and I have witnessed their strength with my own eyes. Believe me there's way more people who get it and empathize. I honestly feel kinda bad for those who DON'T understand because this tells me they simply don't know what it's like and because of that they will never know that depth of compassion and love, of course it comes at a great cost but that's ultimately what drives those bonds to be so strong. I may not know you or what the specifics of your life are, but I admire and appreciate the fact that you are there for your son and do take care of him. I always say that until we are willing to take care of those who are hardest to care for, we will never "grow" as a society, so long as we choose to abandon people because it's hard, we're really just abandoning ourselves.

He’s found a holistic method to help his poor baby girl, let him do what he can for HIS child! I applaud him for this and the fact it’s a natural growing plant is all the better, I wish her the best of luck. My mother was a paraprofessional in my school growing up so I spent a lot of time with mentally handicapped children and I’ve seen it first hand, if this helps I say let them do it!

Listen dude, I consume cannabis in basically every way you can. It's a drug. Just because it's a naturally occurring compound doesn't mean it's not a drug. Psilocybin is a natural compound in magic mushrooms. Still a drug. Food is a drug. Caffeine is a drug. There's a negative connotation to the word but it doesn't make drugs inherently bad.

I just did some research, and unfortunately in 2018 Texas Child Protection services pushed forward on charges on the parents for "abuse" for giving a minor "an illegal substance". (Despite Marij reducing her self harm), leading to The Parents along with Kara having to go to court. Fortunately however, the process was Brief and the judge dismissed the charges, and they retain guardianship of her. Mark made a final statement on the case saying (paraphrase) ' It's a shame the medicine that helps her is treated as an illegal substance in this state. ' (A message I think most people can agree with). They've since stayed out of the media, and most likely want privacy.
Everything I found was through various Texas legal news and local news stories by the way, I hope the best for them. And I hope Texas reforms their Marij policy soon.
