I once had a friend (I don't even know him that well actually) who texted me, "can we meet up? I need to talk to someone cos I'm thinking of suicide". I said okay but I panicked so I messaged friend who studied therapy. He gave me 3 advices that I will always remember:
1. Your role is only to listen, get him to talk and process his own feelings.
2. Best advice you can give is help him find resources to get professional help. Do not give life advices.
3. Whatever happens, his happiness and his life is not your responsibility. Do the best you can to help him but don't let his emotions drag you down with it
Definitely what I always need when I'm depressed, and suicidal: people with no attachment, or stake in my life, to give me apathetic attention so I can gain my resolve.
Best response my best friend committed suicide I was living in Kauai mind you I had been sexually assaulted and tried multiple times to kill myself he stood with me on the phone everyday till I got home .. idk what made me come home but I did and I've known him my whole life not knowing he had tried killing himself and his mother was forbidden to tell me because he said I'd blame myself forever for it... He wasn't wrong it will be five years but all we can do is listen....
Being a suicidal person who's gone through countless therapists, psychiatrists and etc, here's some other advice for you. Don't take advice from therapists on how to handle a situation. 99% don't give a shit and the way they "listen" is extremely patronizing. The patient is a paycheck.
@@mikeg6285 a lot of that depends on perspective sometimes. It is unfair to say all therapists do not care, although I’m sorry you’ve been treated that way.
@@mikeg6285 I'm not a therapist, and I don't have a ton of life experience because I'm only 20. I have learned that those 3 things can be helpful just from helping my friends from hardship. The most important thing is just showing up (emotionally, physically, however you can). Sometimes the friend is on the other side of the country, and all you can do is sit on the phone with them in their sorrow. Any effort is worth it. Pushing off the end for even a single day is worth it. All I ask is that we stay long enough to see the sunrise, and then perhaps the next, and the next after that. People forget that life is worth living for the little things, like friendship and sunrises.

Though I had never met her (my friend had moved to Idaho) myself, I was terrified for the young girl and convinced my friend to let me talk to her
She had a rough home life and was ready to end it all
I talked to her for 2 hours and finally managed to convince her to calm down, not take the pills, and go to sleep
Afterwards I turned on the radio and this song immediately started playing.

Her best friend was sick, so she went to the store to buy some cold medicine, even though we told her not to. She said she would be fine, and I let her go, joking with her like always and saying goodnight.
She never came home. She was found the next day, dead. Her stalker was taken to jail, but I wish I'd known how to save her life. I know I could have. But I didn't...

I had the same sort of problem, but it was one of my friends that was going to slit her wrist. I tried SO hard to talk her out of it, I was in tear on the computer on Facebook trying to stop her but it didn't work. She did slit herself, but her uncle heard her fall, found her and rushed her to the ER in time. It is a scary thing to have going on. I failed, but she at least didn't die for my mistake. You know how to save a life. Me... not so much. I'm glad it went well for you.

This song hits me hard. My best mate was married & found out his wife had terminal cancer she sadly passed away. As a result he hit depression HARD.. he text me & our other mates we ALL left to be with him, he needed us. That night we spoke all of us long hours, early morning we had all fallen asleep during that time he committed suicide.

I'd say this song is about someone who's close friend who either died from or was going through a drug addiction. The narrator was trying to help him through his addiction but the friend denied it, but now it's too late to do anything as the friend's passed away or he's too deep in his addiction. I won't go into details but if you look at the lyrics you can piece it together.

As a firefighter of 8+ years, I have pushed on 38 dead people’s chest, only 7 have had a second chance. Each time the bigger number gets higher, I listen to this song, it makes me think:
What did I do wrong?
What if I did ____ different?
What if I was there just a bit faster?
What if I was already at the firehouse when we got the call?
(And much more questions flood my brain)
And I’m sorry to the 31 people that didn’t get a second chance, and no matter how you pasted and what your life was, I hope you are resting peacefully now.

Been there brother. I ended up leaving the fire service because of the one that I wanted to save and I failed her. Even though it was a fatal car accident, she was a girl I knew. I was there with her to the end and many have said over the last 33 years that there was nothing more that I could have done. I will forever feel like I failed Melanie. So I know what you mean. I will repeat to you what was told to me. Remember the ones you did save, because it's not that you didn't try with the others. You have them every fighting chance to live, not giving up when they already have. Don't give on it like I did,the fire service needs good people, not the gloryboy types but the dedicated. Just like their mental health is important,so is ours. I definitely miss my best friend, but the toxicity was too much to handle for me either. A few months ago, my friend used to face time me a lot. I was confused because they usually call me like twice a week. But I later found out that a lot of not so great things were happening in her life, I realized she called me so she can have some sort of joy. I used to hate her in elementary school but little did I know that she'd become someone I talk to often and became close to her. She doesn't know it, but i care so much about her. I can remember a memory and feel some emotions with someone through music. This song will remind me the strong emotional bond I developed with them and gave me a reason to live and fight for my life. I am currently battling PTSD everyday and my 3 cats gives me strength to overcome it a day at a time.
This video always gives me pain. Ever since my Dad died, I blamed myself. He died early in the morning of a heart attack, and by the time he was found it was too late for him to be resuscitated. That same morning I woke up earlier than normal, but being the lazy piece of shit I was, I went back to sleep. Next thing I know I'm waking up to my mum screaming. If I had just gotten out of bed and gone out to the living room to greet my dad, I might have been there when he had his heart attack and maybe called the ambulance. Maybe he would've survived. I'll never know for sure, and I don't think I'll ever forgive myself completely.

I know how Pat felt. I know the feelings and emotions he probably went through. In some ways, I kinda wish that I didn’t know first hand how depression/ suicidal thoughts felt. But it’s part of life.
