I have struggled mimicking the neon effect in my presentation renders (I'm a retail designer and neon lettering is all the rage at the moment) and this clip has truly made this part of the rendering stage in Photoshop so fun and exciting as the lettering actually looks neon lit rather than a failed blur effect. My only question is: How do I remove parts of the background to make it transparent? Like the top, sides, bottom.
Click the "Lock" on the "Background" layer in the layer panel. Then you can erase the background layer using the erase tool or you can mask the layer then erase it.
hye, may i ask, why in the neon layer copy 2 part for the drop shadow my part can't click the overlay....can you figure it out what is my problem there? thank you

How to give different colours each letters?
Add a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer. Select Colorize and adjust Hue. Then select the Mask Layer, brush Black on the letters to change it back to the original colors. Then repeat the steps.
