CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Seraph (Collin Chou) tests Neo (Keanu Reeves) with his own unique method.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
After creating an international sensation with the visually dazzling and intellectually challenging sci-fi blockbuster The Matrix, the Wachowski brothers returned with the first of two projected sequels that pick up where the first film left off. Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) have been summoned by Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) to join him on a voyage to Zion, the last outpost of free human beings on Earth. Neo and Trinity's work together has been complicated by the fact the two are involved in a serious romantic relationship. Upon their arrival in Zion, Morpheus locks horns with rival Commander Lock (Harry J. Lennix) and encounters his old flame Niobe (Jada Pinkett Smith). Meanwhile, Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving) has returned with some surprises for Neo, most notably the ability to replicate himself as many times as he pleases. Neo makes his way to The Oracle (Gloria Foster), who informs him that if he wishes to save humankind, he must unlock "The Source," which means having to release The Key Maker (Randall Duk Kim) from the clutches of Merovingian (Lambert Wilson). While Merovingian refuses to cooperate, his wife, Persephone (Monica Bellucci), angry at her husband's dalliances with other women, offers to help, but only in exchange for a taste of Neo's affections. With The Keymaker in tow, Neo, Trinity, and Morpheus are chased by Merovingian's henchmen: a pair of deadly albino twins (Neil Rayment and Adrian Rayment). Filmed primarily in Australia and California (the extended chase scene was shot on a stretch of highway build specifically for the production outside of San Francisco), The Matrix Reloaded was produced in tandem with the third film in the series, The Matrix Revolutions.

I would love to get that knowledge of fighting lol
Lmao..this is the perfect comment for this scene
It's worth noting that Seraph is uniquely positioned to give this "test." No one we see before or after this point is Neo's relative equal. Seraph even says "I have beaten you before," to Smith. Seraph is the only entity strong enough to discern an agent posing as The One from the actual One and that is DOPE.
so... why didn't the machine just make more copies of seraph to keep smith in check? like a immune system making more killer cells to match with the replicating virus?
In the game "enter the matrix a tie in storyline between matrix reloaded & revolution Niobe & ghost are tested by seraph. If you lose to him he is not letting pass to go see the oracle.
What surprises me about Seraph is that if he was as strong as Neo, because he couldn't escape Smith (clones) when they looked for him, if Neo could escape them, he only faced Neo the Smith Oracle.
@@anyeloforceman7385 Neo escaped because HE IS HACKING like flying. Seraph is a program, so he cant fly. He's stronger but he's not a human. He thinks like machine. And machines knows that humans cant fly. Its a rule.
Smith did fly and he is a machine BECAUSE Smith saw Neo fly. And he just changed that rule and adapted himself.
Don't forget seraph was trying to protect the little girl more so than fight his way out
i might be taking a wild guess here but Seraph derives from seraphin, which means "he who is made of fire". He is literally a firewall meant to protect other programs!
seraphims are winged celestial beings with a fiery passion for doing God's good work
It's translated as fiery serpent as well, like dragon. Yahweh breathes smoke in the old testament so this makes sense seeing as these are his children.
And he does a “handshake”
sounds pretty accurate not gonna lie. he test the programs like fighting you to see if you're not an agent or a virus like smith. at least thats what i'm thinking
Wouldn't that also partially explain why Neo sees him the way he does before they fight? Of course it's not shown here but Seraph appears bright and almost firelike.

A boss who can kick my ass proper is a boss I want to work for.
In other words: "If I can kick your ass, would you accept my employment, please?"
so, basically seraph is an anti-virus software. so cool
Did you know the tea he drinks symbolizes that!
Christopher Perrault no. Neo sees him irradiating a golden color. Green is for software, gold is for hardware. Programs running on hardware are always faster and more efficient than programs running on the OS. Thats why hes that fast that can fight and match with Neo, and he also mentioned that he defeated Smith in the past. Same reason.
Agents are the anti-viruses.... Thats why they are in opposition to Smith.
His signatures aren’t up to date which is why he can’t beat Neo
@@Adonis8989 Neo technically operates outside the programming logic of The Matrix, being able to bend and rewrite the code to his will. Seraph being a special type of hardware program might be able to process some of those changes/alterations that Neo makes (like speed) to match him.
You can really tell that the guy who plays Seraph is an actual martial artists. There's a sharpness of movement and flexibility there you don't get without years of training.
Yeah he is.. That Collin Chou. Dude if you should check out Seraph in this fight scene! It's epic!

+Uralya 909 Damn that was epic!
+plushr .. Hands down one of the top 10 fight scenes ever. That fight choreography was amazing!
+The Pillsbury Plougher I just wanted to say the same exact thing haha
This was probably the most interesting fight in the movie because it was the only time Neo came up against someone who he couldn't swat around easily.
I'm pretty sure he could end it anytime he wanted he was just holding back as the guy wasn't a threat.
+Joshua Willis The Agents weren't a threat to him either and he disposed of them quickly. What would be the point of holding back here? He even got pretty aggressive at times in the fight. Why would he deliberately do that but intentionally do it slow and weak enough for Seraph to block it?
+AbyssalZones when I say "not a threat" I mean the guy is not trying to kill him or anything they are basically just sparring. Neo is holding back because it's not a fight for his life so there's no reason for him to use his full strength. She he's holding back which is why that other guy was able to last that long in the first place
But Neo didn't know why he attacked him. That was kind of the point of testing him in a fight.
Joshua Willis hahaha u idiot u don't know about seraph do u? Hahahaha
Life hack - if you're losing a fight, jump back and pretend the whole fight was a test.
Just a prank bro
You never truly know someone until you fight them.
It's true though, even in video games when you fight someone you have extensive experiences with, even behind an anonymous nane, I can tell by the aggressiveness and style on who is behind the character I'm fighting against.
Good advice for interviews.
Well, lets go at it then Super Pochaco. And we can have coffee later 😀

That's a really cool observation actually. It's almost like different phases or 'levels' of the test.
Third is kung-fu
Yuen Woo Ping is a legend for a reason
Really cool observation mate.
But, seriously, it's a damn good fight scene.
The moves look good but the sound effects with the punching and kicking make it unrealistic for me now. Neither of them gave any kind of hi-yaa! during the fight which I'm sure is one of the basic lessons of any of the combat arts. Especially when you're trying to defend yourself like neo was from an attacker. I still like the franchise in a nostalgic way but the older I get the more things change for me, makes me wish I could go back before I realized what was going on behind the scenes :(
Sorry I sound like a troll, I don't mean to.
John Duckworth on fight science they tested the striking force of a couple of people with and with out the Kiah's used in martial arts and found that your striking force is indeed stroner with a kiah something about being able to consume and excell more oxygen and therefore have an increased striking force

It's supposed to look and feel fake. They are in The Matrix.
They did a good job finding this dude after Jet Li turned down the role.
His name is Collin Chou. He also has a great fight scene with Donnie Yen in the movie Flash Point, which you naturally can find here on youtube.
Colin Chou is a legend. Considering the action choreographer it wasn’t hard. Jet Li turned down the Role of Neo as well.
His real name is Zou Zhaolong (Collin Chou), but in China we usually call him by his nickname Chang Wei (a character's name in a comedy this guy stared as a very bad guy with great fighting skills). He has played a lot of bad guy roles in Chinese Kungfu movies, but in an interview he said he never acts as a bad guy in a foreign movie, because he doesn't want westerners to think Chinese are bad.
@eric mmm and he's Taiwanese
@@aquaticlibrary wut? u must be kidding ... where did u get this source of information? Jet Li turned down for Seraph role only, there is no way he were casted for Neo role
I love how they went with the 'slow is smooth', smooth is fast' approach to this fight scene. None of the moves they make are overly flash, or extremely fast like you see in so many movies these days. The moves are slow and deliberate, which means that they don't look rushed or choppy. The smoothness gives it the appearance of being very fast, which is a very satisfying illusion.
Really that's how you should film martial arts. We want to see the action, not just a blur of editing, CGI, shaky cam garbage, or whatever. The action should be purposeful, and treated like it's own character. Give it time to shine.
That's not to say other action styles don't work when executed well. Shaky cam action actually looks great in something like the Bourne movies that popularized it. But the editing is really really well done, each shot is purposeful and lends to the frantic nature of the fight scene. But it also shows you everything. A lot of bad shaky cam use it to hide bad choreography, lack of skill or polish. Or maybe the choreography is great, but we'll never know because it was poorly executed. Someone watched the Bourne movies and was like "yeah I want that".
But martial arts should be smooth, show the action, show the moves, let us enjoy the masterful choreography, the cinemaphotography, the smart editing, and the skill of the actors who put in several hours to make it look good and believable.
@@andmicbro1 amen, brother. Couldn't have said it better myself.
yeah that's an analysis of the choreography style. A precursor to The Raid movies, maybe?
Love the way they handle the shot. Sure they look like they're moving rather slowly, but I'd rather have this than shaky-cam close-up jump-cuts.
Shakey-cam is only used for garbage actors who have no skill.. I despise shakey-cam! Lol

Seraph´s forearm attack gets blocked by Neo, who counter attacks but oversteps and gives Seraph a chance for him to get behind Neo and corner him, but Neo even tries to hit Seraph with the back of his right arm, blink and you´ll miss it because thats how fast the action goes
Scenes like this is what makes the Matrix movies so good. The new one is just Neo spamming his telekinetic abilities and being a human psychic barrier for Trinity.
Nobody involved in the Matrix 4, wanted to make another Matrix film, not their choice. The film that has been made, was made in such a way as to end it, kill it, and make it difficult to "resurrect" as is humanly possible as its about the only way to prevent warner brothers from massacring the ip like Star Wars or Star Trek, which they threatened to do with or without Lana (one of the creators).
This film is not a masterbation fun time for Matrix fans, its a middle finger to studio executives who just pissed away 200 million dollars on manufactured failure because they would not leave her nor her work, alone. And for that, I can only applaud her efforts, and the efforts of all involved who while they had fun making it, were all clearly aware it was a film no one wanted to make other than studio executives and marketing departments.
@@Nine-Signs or maybe she just had a different vision for the film bro
@@rerewewrwrwrw What on earth are you talking about, her "vision" is clearly there on screen, I mean the damned thing starts with a middle finger and kick in the balls to Warner within the first act. It is a fact they were going to do Matrix 4, with or without the original people, at that point what miniscule creative control the creator has over her own works owned by a corporation by default evaporates. See Clive barker for details.
She made the film at contractual gunpoint, and she made it this way, due to that. An entertaining enough film with a clear message screaming "I HAD NO CHOICE" from between the pages and frames.
It is to me not a Matrix film as such, it is a nod to them, and of that world, but it stands apart and hopefully will be the last we see of the franchise, god willing.
This fight scene is so well shot. You could rewatch it many times and appreciate the choreography and the tightness of the fight
Too bad the new matrix movie sucks it ruined a franchise.

Comment of the year 👏🏾
The irony is that Cyberpunk was anything but breathing.
I can only congratulate wo ping and the matrix team for creating and photographing this awesome and beautiful coreography.
Woo Ping, not too long ago was awarded the title of best movie fight choreographer ever... He's done so much with Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Donnie Yen, and of course American movies like the matrix and various others...
The use of color throughout the Matrix trilogy is very significant. When inside the matrix, there is a green hue to everything. And in this scene, Seraph is seen wearing both black and white, which speaks to his purpose. He is neither friend, nor foe, neither man nor program...his purpose is to 'protect that which matters most' at any given time. He could be referred to as the equivalent of an agent but whereas an agent protects what matters most within the matrix, seraph protects 'that which matters most' to the future of both man & machine.
Also, he is shown as yellow coded entity in Neo's code vision. Meaning that Seraph is a hardware program with vast amount of processing power unlike the software program like the Agents.
johnmin93
Either that or it's racist somehow.
Actually Serpeh is a generation one agent from the Paradise Matrix where the Agents were Angels. He survived multiple system updates like the Marovingian did it's the reason he is called "Wingless" In the third movie.

This scene is engraved in my mind because at the end Neo says "you could've ask" and Seraph answers back "you truely know someone until you fight him". At first I thought this was a bit ridiculous but it's so damn true. You can only know someone once you've tested him in an argument.
Some people are honest, angry, some lies or exagerate, some flees... And these flaws are revealed only in that condition.
Real men keep their swords sheathed. That's martial arts.
good insight
Yes you see someone's true character when faced with adversity.
Yeap. Words are cheap.
The fight choreography in this movie is second-to-none… from this scene against Seraph to the hundreds of Smiths to the chateau against Merovingian’s henchmen, I’ve never seen anything like it in any other film.
Watch a movie called Iron Monkey, or Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Same fight choreographer.
My favorite was the fight in the beginning against the Upgrades. The only one who got ahold of him ended up kicked into a wall. The other two followed quickly. You can even see the Agent who kills Trinity in Neo's dream.
re-watching the trilogy is even better in 2020 for some reason.
Crazy how well this has aged.
Truly ahead of its time.
The actor fighting Neo is definitely a martial artists.

Neo & Seraph should have done Fusion Dance and become "Neraph" they could have easily defeated Smith with there combined Battle Power
If Smith was defeated at any point before what happened, happened. Would have lead the Matrix into a cascading failure. Which would have lead the machines in the real world to survive without power for the their future.
The Matrix needed Agent Smith. As Smith was the one. Not Neo.
Neo and the others never left the real matrix. They had only escaped into various levels into the Matrix. Not a single person in this movie ever truly escaped The Matrix.
@@OldieWan Of course I see more than everything that if Smith had been defeated before, he would not have multiplied to the point of making the machines uncomfortable because Smith was destroying the matrix at will, allowing humans not to produce energy, therefore the machines would not have energy and they would die and just for that reason, he made a deal with Neo, that if he defeated Smith, he would "free" the humans who supposedly left the matrix.
@@OldieWan It seems very interesting to me, without a doubt I believe that they are inside the same matrix, being they deceived, not to mention that in matrix 2, Neo could stop the machines and that is not something normal in the "normal" world, another piece of information, is that smith came out of the matrix and it does not make sense if it is a machine, even if he has a human, it was not something normal not to mention that there are rumors that they say that he planned to make the end of matrix 3 just as you mentioned, making the viewer see , that trinity, morpheus and Neo are still asleep in the matrix, but they did not do it because humans would realize the reality that we are living and to continue deceived, they changed the ending as we witnessed it in matrix 3 in the last scene.

Big Matrix fan here...watching this for the Nth time and still finding this scene amazing. 1. The cinematography here has so many details - many of the "flat shots" (e.g. from the side 0:36; from the top 0:43) perfectly capture the aesthetics of Chinese martial arts that it is not merely a means of force but also an art. 2. Seraph's costume design is also very well done. The Tang suit shows tradition. It being unbuttoned and the tank top inside, which are not common if you look at Ip Man films where the suit is always buttoned, shows in a subtle but fitting way that Seraph's character is one with strength. 3. The fighting on the table, chopsticks cup being kicked away, and the drumbeat are tributes to kungfu traditions
They should 100% make a Seraph solo film
It's like mortal combat with an unbeatable boss?

This one scene alone could stand alone as the best argument as to why Resurrections was garbage.
This is what I imagine what a SSL Handshake looks like
People sometimes wonder why they fight.. Seraph acts like a proxy firewall(could explain his glowing) for The Oracle and fighting is the handshake part for recognition of the client to tell if he is really the person he claims to be = authentication. Every person has a fighting signature and Seraph adjusts his fighting skills accordingly to recognize only that person alone which he expects to interact with, which he totally can because he serves(server analogy) the Oracle. That's why either cannot land a strike. Trivia: Seraph also fights another blue pill in Enter the Matrix and similarly neither can land a blow.

@CRIMNALSNEAK seraph is a firewall. the point of his whole existence is to be able to defend against anything
CRIMNALSNEAK Um, yes, in terms of the Matrix, yes, *Neo* is more powerful than *Seraph*. However, that was not the point the comment you were replying to was saying.
In real life (not the real world in the movie) I think Keanu Reeves must’ve needed some training before doing those kung fu fight scenes. Collin definitely had way more actual kung fu fighting experience, which explains why he had to “slow down for Keanu”.
@CRIMNALSNEAK they are not talking about the personnages abilities, but the actors's ones.
Seraph must have been a good anti-malware program or something.
+Razzy1312 As I understand it, he's a hardware program (firmware), while Neo is a software program. That's the reason why Seraph glows gold instead of the green of the Matrix when we first see him.
At the same time, he's a login screen that happens to know kung fu - and only The One has the correct password. Since programs that run off hardware will always be faster than programs that run off an OS, Seraph is as good as invincible.
Am I glad that forgetting my password doesn't mean the login screen smacks me in the face and declares me unworthy whenever I guess wrong.
+Spiegel1989 Seraph is a Challenge-response authentication software, basically like a CAPTCHA system.
+Spiegel1989 Seraph could be a previous incarnation of Neo which is why he glowed fiery in the Matrix just like Neo does through the Deus Ex Machina as does Smith (who had part of Neo's attributes) shone to Neo when Neo was blind, this could explain why Smith's replication of Seraph calls the oracle "Mom" as The Oracle was described as The Mother of The Matrix by the Architect.
Samuel Benitez not too mention he tells Smith "he beat him once". other than the one, who can best an agent right?

No matter how many years have passed, I still watch The Matrix trilogy with the same fidelity that I did the first time I watched it.
Fun bit of trivia: In the Matrix MMO, which is canon (until the new movies invalidate it), Seraph was originally the equivalent of an Agent in that original 'perfect' Matrix that Smith describes in the first movie. And, yes, those Agents were your classical winged angels, which is why one of the Merovingian's goons calls him 'wingless.' When that Matrix got shut down he cut a deal with the Merovingian to jump ship.
Seraph: "Good."
Neo: "'Good? More like outstanding."
While it is easy to see that Keanu Reeves is not an actual martial artist, I still respect and admire the dedication he put forward to make his fight scenes look authentic.

''You do not truly know someone, until you fight them.''
This fight is so well shot
The soundtrack to this fight sounds like a ticking clock. Seraph is in control the whole time, testing Neo. The fight lasts precisely 60 seconds - the length of the test.
This one minute fight has vastly superior choreography, direction, music, lighting, and set design than anything in Resurrections
Maybe because Keanu is in his mid-50s now and can't do the long take action sequences he did in these films.
@@jeremyfuster7570 Been doing pretty well in those john wick movies.
@@jeremyfuster7570 CLEARLY you haven't watched john wick lol. I'm sorry but theres literally a million ways they could've made ressurections better from both a story and an action standpoint. The entire thing was just lazy writing and choreography, which is no surprise considering the guy that did the choreography for the original trilogy didn't work on the 4th film, and on top of that you could tell the cast did not have the same level of chemistry that the original cast did. The literal first 20-40 mins of the film felt like a parody of what actually happened in the focus group during the production of the movie. Everything about it just reeks of WB's ideas conflicting with the director's vision for the film. Clearly they aren't the same studio they were back in the late 90's/early 00's and it shows.
@@matics28 Yup! One should also keep in mind that the fight choreographer and action director ('cos he also shot the fight scenes not the Wachowskis due to his experience in HK cinema) for the original trilogy, created Neo's fighting style, taking into account that Keanu Reeves would have limited movements due to his neck and spinal injuries at the time, which is why he didn't do a lot of kicks.
Same goes for Hugo Weaving, who had a hip injury.
I think it's even more impressive when you consider how they have to shut down production for good period of time, when a lead actor gets injured.
Yuen Woo-Ping being the OG that he is, works around that and still makes people look badass for decades to come.
He did the same thing in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon when Michelle Yeoh had a torn ACL in the fight scene between her and Zhang Ziyi's character. Still the most badass female fight scene in history.
This is how fight scenes should be filmed generally. No stupid rapid cuts and jerky nonsense. Just let the fight flow and dance.
Beautiful fight with excellent choreography. It's sad that people never have anything good to say about it because it's in the sequels
compare this basically throw away fight scene to any of the abominations in resurrections. shame
Better than all of em
Yeah... they should've used the budget for Matrix 4 to update the CGI in the trilogy instead. Would've earned them more money.
The music in this scene is phenomenal also
I love fighting in film because it's pretty much dance choreography and if you do it right it just flows so well
"You do not truly know someone, until you fight them."
A short but awesome and intense fight scene
Well choreographed, clear to see when Neo is switching on defence and on attack mode
Once he's starting to overpower by counter attacking Seraph , he immediately stops the fight (lol)
Both of them seem to be not intending to destroy each other
Maybe Neo had to if Seraph would have gone seriously harming Neo's Health
Like a lot of people on here have said, Neo could have ended this much sooner if he was ruthless and going all out, but he needed access to the Oracle, which includes knowing exactly where she was, and having access to the correct door opened by the correct person (think back to Neo chasing the Merovingian, he opened the same door he did but got remote mountains instead of the room the Merovingian escaped to). Because of all this, Neo sort of plays along and fights effectively, but isn't trying to destroy Seraph.
the song and the fight.. sick
All the fights in the trilogy are so good
