Last day at Glacier: Polebridge Bear Claws, Bowman Lake, & Whitefish (Alpine Slide & food!)

- Our last day at Glacier didn’t start as planned, but Plan B (err...Plan C) turned out to be amazing! After a super quick hike on the Trail of the Cedars, we headed to Polebridge to try one of their famous bear claws, which we ate at the gorgeous Bowman Lake. After a fun surprise on the drive to Whitefish, we took a couple rides on an Alpine slide before grabbing some awesome sandwiches and ice cream. It was a solid final day in the Glacier area!

in honor of your Bear Scat Ice Cream: The National Park Rangers are advising hikers in Glacier National Park and other Rocky Mountain parks to be alert for bears and take extra precautions to avoid an encounter.
They advise park visitors to wear little bells on their clothes so they make noise when hiking. The bell noise allows bears to hear them coming from a distance and not be startled by a hiker accidentally sneaking up on them. This might cause a bear to charge.
Visitors should also carry a pepper spray can just in case a bear is encountered. Spraying the pepper into the air will irritate the bear's sensitive nose and it will run away.
It is also a good idea to keep an eye out for fresh bear scat so you have an idea if bears are in the area. People should be able to recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear scat.
Black bear droppings are smaller and often contain berries, leaves, and possibly bits of fur. Grizzly bear droppings tend to contain small bells and smell of pepper.
Hahaha the last sentence made me laugh! We always carry bear spray, but do need to get a bell! We tend to just talk loudly to ourselves about random things if no one is around to create some noise.

Very nice vlogs! It’s making me miss Glacier. My favorite hikes when there was Grinnell Glacier, Mount Brown, and Avalanche Falls. Sad that you couldn’t get to see avalanche falls. Hopefully everything is open next time for you!
The closures were a bit of a bummer, but thankfully we know we will be back! We will have to check out those other hikes too!
We did the hike to Avalanche lake a few years ago. Beautiful but I was in no shape for it! Glad coming down was easier! GNP is gorgeous!

Having been around Glacier several times, I love that you guys were just like, "Hey we heard that this Polebridge place is pretty cool and that they have a good bakery!" It reminds me of one of those "Describe a movie badly" things. Haha! That area is always my first recommendation.

I stumbled onto your Vlog. We are collecting National Parks too. We are currently at 27 after our visit to Glacier last summer. We were actually there a week after you and also spent time at Polebridge, Bowman Lake and Whitefish. We will be in Hawaii for our 25th anniversary in June which is how I originally found you guys. @@AdventuresofAplusK We are actually doing a tour that will take us to Ohahu, Hawaii and Maui. We will get 2 more National Parks and are going to do the night snorkeling with the Manta Rays. Whoo Hoo, we can't wait.

We have almost the EXACT same route planned for our 3 days; it's been so fun to watch you guys explore it! Hoping Avalanche is opened by the time we go, but TotC is still so beautiful on its own. Sad to see the end of the Glacier vlogs!

We have three ambitious road trips planned with my older sister for this year. Spring, Summer and Fall trips. Each will depend on the one before it working out successfully (i.e. my sister doing OK).
As I commented on the Nebraska video, I am rewatching some of your videos for the places we hope to go. Actually more for food we hope to eat. 😂
I had totally forgotten about the Polebridge Mercantile Huckleberry bear claw. We have our going to the sun road permit and will be going to Glacier in July. (The trip that includes Nebraska is coming up in May.) We will be staying in Hunger Horse during our time at Glacier. Now I hope we will be able to drive up to Polebridge one of the days we are there. I think we can but as anyone who has planned a road trip knows, we will have to see how it goes. If we get the bear claw, I will comment again!

You're going to love Glacier! It is so epic! Still at the top of our list of lower 48 parks! Polebridge is a super neat area! Get the bear claw!
We hope it gets sorted out soon as well! We don't have any immediate national park plans so hopefully by the time we do there will be a solution!

We just spend 5 days here at West Glacier area as our 2nd visit to GNP! We watched your videos of Highline Trail to prepare ourselves for the hike today! Even we didn’t finish the whole 15 miles, our boys were able to hike 9.1 miles out & back passing Haystack Butte ( we did Iceberg Lake Trail yesterday at Many Glacier so maybe our 10 year old wasn’t fully recover yet 😅 ) We decided to go towards Camas Road tomorrow (our last day here) to the other side of McDonald Lake after watching your this video! We are excited to try this pastry place at Polebridge!!! Thanks for the recommendation!

Was supposed to leave for glacier tomorrow morning but got canceled because of covid restrictions with my university. My boyfriend and I are devastated. Hopefully we can make it next year. This looks incredible!

When we went in June this year, 8 miles of the going to the sun road was shut down due to road rehabilitation. We needed to reroute going around to see the east side probably around 2 to 3 hours drive each way. It was all worth it. 🥰

Hi Adam and Kathryn! I've been watching your channel for awhile now through my Roku's CZcams app, but that doesn't allow a viewer to leave a comment. It's really fun watching the two of you on your adventures! Two years ago, we visited that place in Whitefish and also did the ziplines. Unfortunately, our GoPro was doing burst shots instead of filming, so we don't have the footage. This just means that we need to return and relive that fun experience with the ski lift, zip lines, and the alpine slides! When we were there, I think there was only one slide, so the second one must be new. Thank you for sharing! We hope to connect with you!

@@AdventuresofAplusK The zip line was great! One of the zip lines is very lengthy--about 1900 feet across. It was an exhilarating experience that we look forward to repeating! One person did get stuck about 3/4 of the way across, but it was interesting to see how the guides helped them reach the exit platform. Overall, we had a lot of fun!
That sounds soooo fun! We have zip lined once together in Mexico and it was a blast! Need to try that again soon!
@@AdventuresofAplusK Sounds cool! We haven't been to Mexico yet, but maybe one day. We try to do at least one large trip a year punctuated by lots of smaller 2 or 3-day weekend trips.

I hiked to avalanche lake in the fall time so nobody was there. It was really cold but the lake was so beautiful and peaceful with the snow. I'd recommend coming back to do that hike in October if you can!!

Bummed you missed those two hikes. Bear activity happens quite often. Hopefully the next time you are here it will be clear. I live 30 mins from Glacier and the 5 times I've been this year there has been Bear activity four out of those times.
Oh wow! Is that more than normal? We know things close often, but we definitely had worse luck than some others we know who went this year!
Literally just got back from camping at bowman lake for 3 days an staying whitefish for 3. them huckleberry bear claws have to be the greatest thing ever. Then catching a 4lb cutthroat topped it off. Gods country forsure.

We just went to bowman lake in a toyota corolla and we thought we were going to die.lol The road was crazy rough.lol Lake Kintla is our favorite.
It is rough for sure! We are a bit used to rough roads in the van, but it's definitely not smooth
We were just there 2 weeks ago and we're hoping for some bear sighting but we didn't get lucky. We saw some tracks by the Avalanche lake though. Good luck..

Considering how many things went wrong for you both, it looks like you had a wicked day. That lake which you went to with the bear claw was stunning. 🥰 Speaking of bears - having one come bounding out across the road in front of you is amazing (with enough distance not to hit it of course! 🤣) The alpine slide looked like a lot of fun. Out of the coaster in Helen and this slide, which would you say is faster, or are they much the same?
It came out of the woods and onto the road so fast it took a second to even process what was happening lol! 🤣 I think the coaster was faster, but that also could be because we felt safer going faster on it since it has a track. I went super fast my first slide, but then scared myself lol!
Yo, we just got the bear claw based on this video and it was totally worth the sh*t drive to get it. If you go, get two because the first one is that good.

So I commented on your Going to the Sun Road video, as Google was telling me that we'd made the right choice. Ultimately, we probably still did, but we got "caught" by the smoke from the Oregon wildfires and didn't get the same amazing views you did (tbh, we had no views). We'll just have to go back!

I usually just watch one off videos to learn things (mostly around transitions and now animation), so there isn't one person we have followed loyally. We did take a lot of inspiration from Kara and Nate's videos early on and I know they have an editing course!

I know you guys are way up in Northern Montana. But if you ever get a chance you should go to Red Lodge Montana and then Drive the Beartooth road...over to Cook City...or Take Chief Joseph Highway down to Cody Wyoming...

There's a great Pizza place on the Way to Greybull..its takes you off your destination route, but it's super easy to get back on.
That Burlington Place in Burlington WY.(they're on Facebook) mom and pop joint..
Once you leave Greybull and head to the Mountains(sooo beautiful) there's also the dinosaur tracks on Red Gulch Road. The Shell Valley is stunning, the land formations the color of the Earth the Reds the purples, the Blues.OMG I'm sorry I keep rambling it's just that I grew up here and I think you guys would be amazed to see it. Please Google the Bighorn mountains in Wyoming and you'll see how much there is to do, fishing hiking, rving, camping medicine wheel on the top of the mountain shell Falls......LOVE MY WYOMING 😘💜
We haven't, but you have gotten us excited about it! We are hoping to visit MT and WY again next summer and visit spots we haven't seen yet. And we especially love visiting areas we haven't heard of before!
What camera and stabilizer do you use when hiking? Your shots look amazing! I'd love to be able to capture our trip with the same clarity but not have to drag heavy equipment around.

We drove to Polebridge and tried a Bear Claw, but I wish they had used cherries instead! I can't believe you guys walked the ledge, above the Going to the Sun Road, on the Highline Trail!!! Did you tell your Mom what that was actually like?

4x4 not needed. If it rains or snows- sometimes that's why it's a 4x4 road. But good info for clear weather. re: cell phone connection. When Space X StarLink comes online we may never again be without internet anywhere (except the high arctic...) So include in your videos what it's like to be out of communication. I've been in so many places where just that little bit of extra information... and I could've seen something amazing, visited a site I'd read about for years but somehow didn't think about it preparing for this particular trip. The bear claw scene.... it could've been done with heroin. Yeah, like druggies, doing dope, talking about other dope.... (I've been around druggies, the most boring people in the world. Sugar? Well. I've been keto for a full year now (looking down my imaginary very long nose) but yeah, I still crave it, so I'm drooling over your bear claw. You guys are really good at food, I can taste it. There are a lot of people doing food who are popular, but not good at it.
Fear of heights. Have your balance checked. Maybe do some yoga. I'm an old guy now, I can't close my eyes and stand on one foot for more than a few seconds. I'm also a bit more afraid of heights - I think because of it. I still kayak, so it's can't be that bad. (After hiking in Japan where I was working along a ridge, my butt hanging over hundreds of feet of nothing, some of the hand holds hissing (bats, just don't reach in deeper). Back in Los Angeles, my teaching job at a school with 20 story office buildings along the one side. While doing outdoor supervision I'd look up at those buildings and image inching along a ledge holding on at the very top. No way. Insane. And yet a month before....then I'd laugh. It took a year before I stopped spontaneously laughing about that. That's what travel should do for you.
If our van can make it, any car can! Having no cell service is tough sometimes, but we managed to get there without it, so hopefully knowing what is out there can help someone else. The bear claw is honestly one of the best pastries we have ever had...so dang good! Thankfully our fear of heights hasn't stopped us from anything yet, but definitely puts us out of our comfort zone some, which isn't a bad thing!
East side is actually BETTER than west side, hard as that may be to imagine! I don’t get why they closed it. For Covid-19? Makes no sense, why open west but not East???
It’s because the Blackfeet Tribe, whose land the eastern portion of the park is on, voted to keep it closed due to COVID.

She was with a sitter during our time in Glacier so we didn’t have to worry about her. Made it a lot less stressful!

We stoped for a huckleberry bear claw at the Mercantile every time we were in Polebridge . I have many videos on my channel from all over glacier and the flathead valley including up in the surrounding mountains.
Can't go and not get a bear claw for sure!
