- * Sight Fishing for Golden Trout How To *
The culmination of a summer's worth of backpacking trips. I've invested heavy amounts of time trekking around the Rocky Mountains searching for what I consider the holy grail of trout fishing, the Golden Trout. Now, I love all kinds of trout fishing, and I definitely go through phases, but in the end backpacking for goldens is at the top of my list. (right next to ice fishing for lake trout)
I've learned a few things along the way so here is my attempt at a bit of a "how to" video. I hope you're able to learn a thing or two. But if not, hopefully it just gets you daydreaming about next summer's adventures!
NOTE: As Rich Osthoff said, "Backcountry waters could be more effectively managed-but before that's likely to happen, the fishery as a whole needs more advocates". The exploitation of wilderness areas in inevitable. With an ever growing population, it is so important to get as many "advocates" as possible speaking up for the protection and preservation of our wilderness. Do your part to be an example of showing respect for these backcountry areas. They should not be taken for granted.
Sportsman are inherently secretive about "their spots". I am no different. While there are many places I wont mention or post about, all the locations in my videos have already been "exposed" and are "relatively" easy to find with a quick google search. Those individuals who have the desire to put in the amount of time, miles, and research it takes to find these water bodies are exactly the people we need advocating for them.
Researching potential fishing spots is an extremely enjoyable activity for me. Take a look at state stocking reports, read a few forums, pick out a couple lakes on the map and get at it!

Enjoy and Thanks For Watching!

this video deserves more views, the quality is of the chain
Thanks Sam! Glad you liked it
I hope that you give GOD the praise, because you are a very blessed man.
Awesome video, I'm glad you ended up posting it.
Thanks dude! Going through footage and putting the finishing touches on it today has gotten me real excited for next year! Hopefully we can make it work to get out there together.
@@dysonmorgan7753 We do need to get out next year. I've been getting a lot of tips lately that need to be researched. I get a lot of exaggerated tips but some end up being spot on
No doubt. I'll follow you anywhere Haha!
Thank you for protecting this precious resource by not giving name or location! I've been there several times and it's great, but can't take much pressure!
Really well made movie. Great shots. Awesome fish. Good work dude! Keep it up!
Thanks Shawn 👍
Great video. Really love the Goldens!
Something special about them!
Solid video dude. Golden’s are On the bucket list!!
They're worth the effort!
i recognized one of those lakes from a trip I did in the 80's. We were able to get them to take hopper patterns on the surface, but sub surface is no doubt usually a better bet. It was just that we could see them taking live hoppers on that windy day. A NZ indicator rig might work to eliminate some of the guess work and allow the smaller fly to get down more vertically. Just a thought.
Watching them eat on top would be awesome! Ive only ever convinced the small goldens to eat a dry fly. The bigger ones tend to be more skittish.
@@dysonmorgan7753 They were eating live hoppers, so they were looking up.
Incredible video man. I’m planning a week long backpacking trip in late summer and hope to get on my first golden. Hopefully I’ll be posting a golden video soon. Awesome work. Tight lines
Awesome Video with some great information. Me and a buddy will be up there at some of those lakes in two weeks! Hopefully my two years of research will pay off in a couple nice goldens.
Good luck I hope you are able to get into a few of them!
Gorgeous. Looks like the Wind River or Cascades
Thanks for watching. There are clips from a few different areas in this video.
Awesome video man!
Best place by far is wind river mountains Wyoming just huge goldens there, sierras there pretty small compared to Wyoming. Once you caught a few and seen them not worth the trouble to get to them unless your going for the monsters in Wyoming, nice video.
There are a handful of lakes in the Sierras that have 16-18"(+?) goldens. unfortunately none of them are easy to get to. 1.5-2 day hike in
Sweet vid. Thank you
Well done, I like your content thoroughly! I am also an advocate for our trout waters here in Colorado for our native Cutts. Subscribed
You ever fished with spin rod with lures or spinners for goldens? Are they a fish that will take spinners/lures or is the best bet using fly’s?
I bet you could get them to eat some small lures. Although , I feel like flies would be a better option.
Where that at
cool video keep it up
Thank you 👍
How comes nobody's eating there catches?
Wind river range?
Whats the biggest weight you have gotten?
Is this in the sierra nevada mountains?
There were many different locations shown in this video. Only one was in the Sierras 👍
Good 👏👏👏I have subscribed to your CZcams page. I will wait for you too.
