CLIP DESCRIPTION:
When Jem (Philip Alford) and Scout (Mary Badham) get attacked in the woods on Halloween night, Boo (Robert Duvall) fights and saves them.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning autobiographical novel was translated to film in 1962 by Horton Foote and the producer/director team of Robert Mulligan and Alan J. Pakula. Set a small Alabama town in the 1930s, the story focuses on scrupulously honest, highly respected lawyer Atticus Finch, magnificently embodied by Gregory Peck. Finch puts his career on the line when he agrees to represent Tom Robinson (Brock Peters), a black man accused of rape. The trial and the events surrounding it are seen through the eyes of Finch's six-year-old daughter Scout (Mary Badham). While Robinson's trial gives the film its momentum, there are plenty of anecdotal occurrences before and after the court date: Scout's ever-strengthening bond with older brother Jem (Philip Alford), her friendship with precocious young Dill Harris (a character based on Lee's childhood chum Truman Capote and played by John Megna), her father's no-nonsense reactions to such life-and-death crises as a rampaging mad dog, and especially Scout's reactions to, and relationship with, Boo Radley (Robert Duvall in his movie debut), the reclusive "village idiot" who turns out to be her salvation when she is attacked by a venomous bigot. To Kill a Mockingbird won Academy Awards for Best Actor (Peck), Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Art Direction.

The struggle of being a ham
lol
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
U mean A. Ham?
I always thought she was a beer bottle lol
XD XD XD XD
The fact that this is like a super serious scene makes the whole ham costume like 20x funnier
Sara Petersen honestly
Sara Petersen ducking
The costume may look comical, but if you read the novel, the fact that she was wearing it is what saved her life.
I like to think even in the movie it saved her. think of this scene without her wearing it and she probably gets hurt
Jem and the adventures of Ham Season Finally
HAM DOWN I REPEAT HAM DOWN
Lilyliondragon hahahaha
Just finished the book; loved it with all my heart. But ham down it was :D
When a squad attacks you from your south
Lol
Yeah Jean Louise! You get running Girl!
LMAO
It's times like this that showed what a coward Bob Ewell was. Instead of approaching Atticus directly, he went after defenseless children.
Just when you thought that man couldn't stoop any lower.
I know people call that cowardism, but IDK - children are what is valued the most by parents. He goes after them, he takes what Atticus values the most. He takes his pride and joy. Atticus already knows how Bob feels and thinks and vice versa.
He knew he wouldn't stand a chance against a good shot like Atticus.
In a way, Bob Ewell is a coward. But he's also smart. It would kill atticus to have his children die. Ewell knew that much.
JamaicanRain Yes it looks like a combination of cowardice and sadism
I CANT BREATHE SHE COULDNT GET OUTOF THE HAM
lol
It saved her life, though.
In the book it was crushed around her, but I agree, I figure if she had just slide backwards she would have been free. But then he could have gotten his hands on her.
abigail isbill OMFG IM GONNA PISS MSYDNF
LITTERLY THE HAM COSTUME WAS SO FUNNY
the first thing jem does is shout "run scout run!" so protective
scrainbow1234 reminds me of Jenny saying “run Forrest run” in a southern accent
Well Scout is his baby sister so of course he's protective of her she's the baby of the family who is very niave to the ways of the world.
@@e.lattimer2238 mah mamma always said life was like ah box ah chocolates yew nevah know whatcha gonna get
@@wickedwitchoftheeast88 You mean baby ham, the baby ham of the family.
SO SWEET
To think that Boo Radley was terrified to go outside and face the world his whole life, yet he didn't hesitate for a second to run outside to defend the children, shows what a man of character he was. One of the greatest literary heroes and such a powerful story
He had agoraphobia
That’s why the sheriff decided to sweep the whole incident under the rug. It was a very brave and heroic thing boo did and the right thing to do was respect his wishes to be left alone. Letter of the law vs spirit of the law.
Yes ,it god God dam brilliant!!
Especially since he never uttered 1 word
That's Robert Duvall
The ham costume is literally the funniest thing I have ever seen in my entire life.....lol😂
Literally says “HAM” 😂
When Scout Attacks with it. How could you not love this girl?
(1:38) I like a dummy was thrown down as an attempt to make it look like the boy was thrown to the ground😂.
Sometimes I randomly remember this part if the story and it makes me laugh every time.
It’s metophoirc that two things from her childhood saved her life that night: boo radley and the ham suit. In the novel bob tried to stab scout but the suit protected her from injury.
Glad to see so many have read this American classic book. Mr Ewell was not there to scare these kids but to kill them. read the book - Scout's costume is all torn up from Mr Ewell's knife, Jim's arm is broken & dislocated. Boo is their guardian angel. Keep reading and RIP to Harper Lee.
+Val Killion I agree, this book is amazing, and so is the movie. It truly teaches you about destroying innocence and spreading lies.
Jem*
Don't read the sequel, Harper Lee didn't wanted it to be published since it was a draft but someone got ahold of the draft and published it without her permission.
One of the greatest pieces of American literature. An absolute masterpiece.
+Lisette Garcia No it was the original version of To Kill A Mockingbird but it got rejected so she rewrote it but the manuscript got lost. Eventually she found it and published it as it was.
"CECIL JACOBS IS A BIG WET HEN!!!!!"
Followed by that creepy harp music. I still get chills from that, especially when it's mixed with the ambient noise of the wind rustling the bushes and such.
@@vivianchen6610 nope, it's wet. 'Said it in the novel.
The Scoutiest of all Scout lines
@@NormAppleton lol love it
LOL 😆🤣😂
jem is such a good big brother
Boo's face while he's killing Ewell is probably like, "You fucked with the wrong kids, bitch..."
Same face Lennie made while breaking Curley's hand in Of Mice and Men
Yeah probably
Apologies in advance; I'm about to be a fangirl. But Arthur is a fucking darling. He was abused by his family and then shunned by the county and yet still remains, simply put, a mockingbird--a creature with no intention other than to add a little beauty and kindness into the world. And the fact that he risked his life to save two children whom he's barely even interacted with is just... fuck me, I need a tissue. T-T
The book looses some of the magic when you know what mockingbirds actually do.
thank you for helping me with my homework XD
Barely interacted with in one way; but he watched them grow up, watched their games and sorrows, for years. It was like they were his children.
I thought it was absolutely brilliant to not show most of the actual struggle between Boo and Bob Ewell and instead focus on Scout's eyes and her reaction to convey what was happening. When her eyes just lit up you knew something serious had truly happened there. Also, the almost creepy music leading up to the assault still gives me chills to this day as an adult.
alucard624 or they just didn't want to film the actual fight lmao
Actually there are still images in the making of documentary showing the fight between the two men, but again not seeing it but reacting to what Scout was seeing was just brilliant and very well done.
The movie is just following the book, where the narration is from Scout's perspective. She didn't see the details of the fight.
@@racheldowning5300 no. They were following the book. The schoolyard was pitch black and Scout could hardly see what was happening. Since the book is from Scout's perspective it only makes sense to exclude a majority of the fight.
And she's a ham
This is one of the most eerie and heroic scenes in cinema.
ham charge
that’s not even close to true lol

Vostume
The Ham costume made it so funny this scene to me was just me trying to contain my laughter...
The ham costume really doesn't help the seriousness of the scene. Something I wish was done better in the film. It is too goofy
I know the ham costume makes this unintentionally funny but when Mr. Ewell attacks it scared the daylights out of me as a kid. Still sends shivers down my spine when Jem is injured. An intense scene
Scout is okay
That ham costume, as primitive as it was, protected Scout both physically & psychologically.
Safe in the cocoon, she watched what she could process & looked away when she couldn't.
That was an intense scene, for sure.
If you think that Bob Ewell was there to kill them it's even more terrifying
Those Ewells were always a bad sort, cowardly, acting tough only when faced with someone weaker but turn tail when outmatched. Atticus notes that the Ewell generation before Bob were worse. Makes me wonder how awful his old man was.
The fact that her costume says ham on it makes it so much funnier.
omg the ham costume is so adorable and Jem was so cute also for trying to take care of his sister! you go BOO
I think its just great how much "Boo" cares about those kids :) Makes me tear up
That shot of Scout’s widened eyes seeing Boo kill Ewell through the ham is so haunting. For the first time, she’s truly fully exposed to the darkness and violence in the world as she loses the naive innocence of her childhood. Such a sin it is to kill a mockingbird.
Ok
Okay
Bob Ewell is without of the doubt one of the most disgusting villains ever
Agreed
He makes me genuinely angry and disgusted
And he is one of the biggest cowards ever.
I know so many Bob Ewells
Which is how we as readers know he’s brilliantly written.
This is a black and white movie from the early sixties and yet it's action scene still has better lighting than a fair few modern blockbusters.
Shrew
True!!!
Also the color contrast between Ewell's black clothing, virtually indistinguishable from the inky shadows around it, and Boo Radley's white shirted arms emerging from seemingly nowhere. Fairly obvious symbolism, but it helps maintain the visual narrative of the scene even though its filmed in a deliberately confusing way.
2:12 That’s the scene, do you ever just look at how her eyes widen and you hear a grunt. That could be Boo killing Bob Ewell. Scout just covered for him, maybe that’s what happened. Either way, Boo is like the most precious fictional character ever and I honestly cried twice when reading the book and watching the film. Absolutely amazing
Boo Radley broke his self-imposed isolation to save his two best friends.
So did Tate. He knew that a very public trial would destroy boo so he wanted to respect his wishes which were to be left alone.
It's there Robert Duvall here?
When she sees the man carrying Jem it feels dreamlike, such a beautiful ending that Boo Radley was watching over the children
As an older sibling, I can easily put myself in Jem’s shoes for this scene. You’re trying to get your little sibling home on a dark night and you just know someone is following you, and you know you might not be able to protect them.
What’s interesting is that the sheriff(a likely uneducated hick) was better able to understand what happened than Atticus, a top notch educated attorney. No was was Jem able to kill bob especially with a broken arm.
That ham costume tho
Right, she was like screw this ham takes it off and starts runnig
Awh, Jem's such a good older brother protecting Scout!
The first time I saw that pale hand grab the pursuer of the children was one of the most riveting in film history. I remember everyone in the theater gasping. And it was just a hand grabbing a racist murderer. Excellently filmed.
That moment always gives me shivers too! Especially if it's your first time and you don't know (or have guessed) whose hand it is
I think everyone had a pretty good hunch who it was as soon as they saw the ultra pale hand:) remember they saw a shadow of an outstretched hand when they were in the radley yard
I know it's been 4 years but, how was this film/book received back then? Seems like it would be radical to some people,at the time.
"Boo Smash!"
I cried inside.
Jem I consider my favorite storybook sibling...
One of the absolute greatest books and movies of all time!
Boo is one of the cutest, most altruistic character in literature. What a selfless hero!
For once a movie that accurately portrays the book in almost all aspects. BRAVO GOOD SIR!
one fo the gretaest American novels put to screen...*ever*
Well , Holes
@@jackcomet2756 Also that

@@Viridian02 🤫
There is no terror as pure as a child's terror of the dark, and this scene perfectly portrays their fears as to what may emerge from it. Then the aftermath, the quiet and stillness save for the sighing of the wind as Scout watches her (dead, as far as she knows) brother being carried away. It's like a nightmare.
I know many readers liked Boo, because they were curious about him, but Jem was my favorite character in the
book/film. Protective of his little sister, and they played together well...
I watched this movie a lot when I was a kid and this scene used to scare the CRAP out of me! It still is a little but not as much. It's the music!
The music is creepy as hell and really sets the scene, especially the build up to when Ewell appears and starts to try to kill the kids.
I remember shouting "Kill him Boo!" Multiple times when watching this
Did this scene make anyone else cry? Just me..?
Sophia Do made me mad
Why is it tear-worthy?
I was kinda laughing though because of the ham costume. I don't know why.
I always get emotional when the music suddenly kicks back in at 1:42 and you see Boo's hand grab Bob's. Boo is such a hero :')
yeah just you. Well I cried out of laughter when she charged him in the costume, but yeah
Boo was afraid to enter society but he was fearless when he protected those kids
The things we do out of love…
lol i love the ham costume its too funny for me
When Scout sees Boo Radley behind the bedroom door and says "Why there he is, Mr. Tate......" The expression n look on Boo Radley's face conveys so much about himself n who he really is............That is an art in cinematic acting!!!
During the Scene even though Arthur is attack him, Ewell is still trying to kill scout, that just shows how much of a psycho he was, and how much he wanted to get back at Atticus
That ham costume is such a tank. It saved scout from being hurt and didnt break 😂👌
this ham costume took some work, and i commend all those who were involved in the making

I just ate some ham... I ATE SCOUT!
Omg!!! Horrible person!! :3

i’m reading this novel at school and it’s amazing.
I think we must've watched this movie as kids around Halloween time..I always think of it at that time of year..Did you know that Boo is Robert Duvall?
Who was also in the Godfather
The reason you think of this around halloween is becuase the film is set on Halloween, that's why they went to the school, it was halloween night.
Duvall’s first film role!
The fact Boo Radley was seen as a creepy hermit....yet he saved them both against someone with evil intentions
This scene scared me so much as a kid, but I couldn't take my eyes off it. It still kind of unnerves me, and it angers me to think of anyone ever attacking my kids like this.
The way he puts his hand on scout so protectively…that was my brother too.
Such a tense scene, love the music!
In the book Scout cannot get out of the costume on her own.
I think she did... Because in the book she was out of the costume before she came in the house... Right?
As far as I remember, she could not get out of the costume, that's why she couldn't see who saved them two, and also why she wasn't get killed. Then when they came home, Calpurnia or the aunt helped her get out of it.
Hạnh-Minh Nguyễn I remember the sheriff saying it saved her.
I love Jem so much.
Yeah, the buildup to what happens is what gives me the creeps still to this day. Elmer Bernstein's music really sets the tone for the entire sequence. I especially love the intense piano that starts when Boo Radley comes to their rescue to stop Ewell. I haven't hated a character from a movie or the original book as strongly as I have Bob Ewell. There was nothing redeemable about that man. He got what he deserved and then some.
we watched this in my english class and omg everyone was in TEARS watching this scene
The book was AMAZING the film was just as GOOD Boo Radley is an Angel sent from heaven to save those kids
I also just recently read this part of the book it kind of scared me 😮
+Abby cooper Abbs, the way I see it, if it doesn't scare you, you have no survival instinct.
m3rrys0ngstr3ss I have no intention of replying any further to this comment 😐
AStar97 Rblx don’t worry I had to read this book like 18 years ago in class and this part scared me too!
It's meant to be scary in the book, and I found it even scarier in the movie here due to the music and the buildup right to when Ewell attacks the kids. I also start cheering once that piano music kicks in when Boo shows up and starts to fight Ewell to protect Scout and eventually kill Ewell in self defense.
Boo is like a vigilante
That one moment you realise the actor who played scout is called Mary BadHAM
The echo at 0:26 is so unsettling I don’t know why tho...
I just finished reading this part of the story and oh god is it amazing!
the ham costume always cracked me up. 😂 the way it just says 'ham' on it. but for real though, this scene had me shook.
When I first read the book I thought that Boo was a ravenous, psychotic killer, but in the end I was surprised what Boo really was, a lonely man and Scout and Jem's Savior. Too me, Boo Radley is actually the real main character in the story.
RIP Harper Lee....still a great movie 💚💜💙💃🏿💯🙋🏿
Whenever I get to the part where we see Boo come to the rescue, I want to start crying.
This scene scared the hell out of me as a kid. It also started my cinematic admiration for Robert Duvall
I was fifteen when I first read this book.
The ending have me the jibblies.
When I first saw this scene in the movie, I was like,
"Oh...my..god...This is EXACTLY how I imagined it!! "
😲
The first time I saw this film I was the age of the brother. I was spending the night at my Grandparents house. This was the Late Late Movie, no one else was awake and this scene scared the crap out of me.

Scout's ham costume is the cutest thing ever
If anybody deserves to die, it's Bob Ewell. Also, Boo Radley's like "Now's my chance to be a hero!"

love the way they hammed this up! I went to Tenerife last year and read the book in a day on the glorious beach ! this movie and obviously the book remains a work of amazement!!
I always loved this scene. I just love the intensity.
1:40 the way Scout ran was so funny to me
Im in love with Boo
awesome scene. the music, the mood. this whole movie is awesome.
I love the music the plays when boo appears
Kinda disappointed with this scene. In the book, scout cant gwt out of hwr costume on her own. Two, if you read carefully, it says that bob was trying to kill the kids with the knife and actually slit the throat of scouts costume and thats what saved her. Its not said but implied. But I guess the movie is great in its own way. I love borh the movie and the book, Ofcourse, the book a little more ;)
bro i'll take charging ham scout any day
I was a little more than disappointed with the ending of the book when Atticus believed Jem killed Bob Ewell. I was like, um, this was a guy who nearly fainted from fright when his children showed up during the mob gathering....
Chibi Lychee : I’d like to think that a man of Atticus’ wisdom immediately knows who killed Bob. But same as Tate, he wanted to save Boo from all the messiness so could only thought of that as an alternative. Tate saved both Jem and Boo from the hassle.
Those children are all Boo Radley has. He has lived a horrible life, abused and isolated, too afraid to show his face for years. He communicates with the kids in his own way, like leaving them presents and fixing Jem’s pants. He delights in hearing their laughter and chatter outside his house every day. Then one night, he hears a totally different sound from them. He hears screams. He looks. He sees a man with a knife ambushing them, trying to silence them forever.
And after a lifetime of hiding, Boo Radley emerges.
Everybody needs a boo and a gem by their side ✌️
This scene is just one of many reasons why this is the greatest movie/book of all-time
i was in class watching this and the ham costume made me start laughing and my teacher got mad at me
