@Fred LaForge. Hey Fred. Good to hear from you. Congratulations on building a Rocket. I didn’t build mine, just bought it a few years ago. I can imagine you miss yours. When I retired from the airline a while back, I had no intention of buying a plane. But within a few months, I was almost in a panic, I wanted a Rocket. So glad I found one. Such a great way to spend retirement!! Build another one!!
@Fred LaForge. I hope you took lots of pictures. I know my time is limited. That’s the main reason I do these videos. I have about 2 pictures from my AF days. So I want to be sure I save some memories while I can. I’m coming up on 69, got my fingers crossed that I can fly for another 10.
Great video. Really get to see everything that way. Nothing more frustrating than a video of someone driving a Porsche and you never get to see the outside!
@bertraminc. Thanks. I know what you mean. That’s why I like the 360 cameras. They don’t give as good of picture as other cameras. But, it like having your own camera crew.
@bertraminc. A couple years ago I had researched the difference between the F1 and the Harmon Rockets. As I recall, my impression was that the Harmon was a modified RV4 and the F1 was an F1 kit. I think maybe at one time when a complete F1 kit wasn’t available, guys had to get some RV4 wings. The best source would be to google “Team Rocket “ and then call Vince or whoever answers. I know they’ll be glad to talk to you. Even happier to sell you a kit. Nice fellow, I’ve talked to him on phone a few times and met at Oshkosh. My buddy is building an F1 right now. It’s an early kit, but complete with wings and tail. I did notice on Joes Harmon, his tail is shorter than on my F1.
@@WheelsInTheSky Ok, thanks... I was military and don't have much recip time. My friends fly RV's and beg me to by one. The F1 looks nice... still doing my research. Thanks for the replies.
@trob20101. Thanks, glad you liked it! Yes, it’s a great time and it’s fun to share the videos. I’ll probably post something this weekend. Thanks for watching.
EXCELLENT video, Sir! Gorgeous Rocket, professional commentary and the scenery is simply incredible! Nice use of lead, lag & pure pursuit curves...I spent some time in the USAF myself and you're obviously a seriously professional pilot with ongoing hazard/threat analysis during the formation flight. I REALLY want an RV-8, but live in Germany as a retired F-15C driver, so I'll have to do some research. I also follow Trent Palmer, who does some amazing things in the Reno/Utah backcountry in his seriously STOL "Freedom Fox," you may want to give him a look. THANKS again for taking us all along, Brother!
Nice to meet you Steve. Thanks for your comments. Half my AF pilot training class was from Germany, always wanted to go over there to live for a while. I know of Trent Palmer, his videos inspired me to get a plane. I’m still looking for a bush plane, but wanted a Rocket or RV8 first as they can get you where you’re going a bit faster. Let me know if you get an RV8.
What a surprise to find this video! I'm the builder of F1 Rocket N5491W. First flight in 2005 and "Slipped the surly bonds of earth" for ~ 10 years. The IO 540 made for one sweet ride - still looking good! Reluctantly sold her few years ago and built a Carbon Cub EX-2 - was time to go "Low and Slow". Safe Flights.
@Ethan. Thanks Ethan. That was a fun evening flight. Shane has since sold his Yellow RV8 and got a Harmon Rocket. Although it’s down for maintenance right now. Joe sold his RV3 and also got a Harmon Rocket. In total, we have 8 Rockets in the area now. Maybe I’ll try to get them all together sometime for a video. That would be cool!! Thanks for your comments.
@@WheelsInTheSky that’s awesome! Got to fly in a Rocket once and really liked it allot! Would love to own one at some point. Did you receive training in the Rocket prior to buying yours or have previous experience in something similar (RV, Extra, etc.)?
@Ethan. Prior to the Rocket, I didn’t have any tail wheel experience, but I knew I wanted one. So I got about 5 hours in a friends J3 Cub. Then went down to the Houston area to see Bruce Bohannon, and got 4 hrs in his RV8. He does a very good job instructing and he gave me my tail wheel endorsement. About a month later I bought my Rocket. When I took off to bring it home, I just made sure to push the power up slow, because I was kinda uncertain what to expect. When I got to my Home airport, I made a couple approaches before trying to land. It was all an exciting experiment. I was so excited that day!! I think the name Rocket is more of a sales tactic than a description. The plane is just an RV8 with a bit more power and a longer nose that’s hard to see over. But as you know from flying one, they look and sound cool and are a blast to fly.
I don't usually watch most videos to the end, I tend to get bored easily, but before I knew it you were touching down and I couldn't believe I watched the whole 15 minutes. Your narration was easy to listen to as well. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Ric. Thanks I like doing a video here and there, but the hardest part is trying to capture the real excitement. Probably impossible. But it helps when viewers like flying. Thanks for watching.
You fly the way most people imagine they would fly if they could. Low level, loops, turns, and just the joy of flight. Great video. Most of the other flight CZcamsrs seem to be in a hurry to get to altitude, fly in straight lines, and get the fuel burn just right. Keep making beautiful flight videos and I'll keep on watching them!
Thanks Patrick. If I can manage to capture just part of the joy of flying, then my mission is complete. As I’m sure you know, a simple video never seems to quite express the joy that can be had. For me, what makes a big difference is flying with friends. Thanks for your comments.
Wow! Just found this channel and I’m loving these videos! You are single handedly sealing my decision on weather to build a zenith 750hd, or a RV14,,, . Thx for not ruining the video with music. Your sporadic narrative is all we need
Hi Dave R. Thanks so much for your comments. You may find you need both airplanes, one is never enough! I’ve been looking for a backcountry plane for a while now. My friend and I go up to Idaho to explore the countryside, but we can only land on very smooth grass. There are so many places we want to go. But, I have to say, there’s nothing like the speed and agility of an RV. Hard decision. Please keep me posted on what you decide.
Hi Steve . What are you building? How close to finishing? Mine has been down for a month now. Doing annual, repairs and putting in a smoke system. I’ll do some more videos when I get back in the air.
I think your point about he knoll blending in to the background was pretty valid and makes good sense. Theres some serious energy management going on when you form up - great video spectacular on my mac27" 4k pro. You guys seem to have similar problems to us with local businesses putting up barriers like your aluminium trees on final. IN England they plant lilandi fur trees which grow to30m in a few years. Beats me!
Hi Richard, I’ll bet it’s nice watching on that 27”. That was an amazing flight we had that evening. I felt I had to say something about the hills blending in because it doesn’t happen that often. But when it does, it’s amazing how they can just disappear.. Those trailers at the end actually sit on a bit of a high spot, just to make it worse! Sounds like you might be able to use a quiet chainsaw on a dark night!
Gorgeous airplane and a beautiful flight. The video captured with the 360 camera is great. Keep up the quality content. This video reminds me of the simulator flight programs I used fly only with better scenery and actual footage. Thanks David.
Thanks David, every time I go fly here, I’m just amazed how pretty it is. The other evening we took a two ship up and just cruised around Mount Olympus and Lone Peak sight seeing. There’s a peak just behind Lone Pk where the skiers tracks start at the very top where they get dropped by helicopter! Looked like they had an incredible ski run down the mountain!

Hi David, thanks for those comments.. I have to say though, the older I get the more I realize I’m an average pilot who just happens to own a Rocket. I spent most of my time watching this video trying to look under the corners of my monitor screen to get a better view during the manoeuvres, visual 1, visual 2, love it! I note your u/c legs wobble like mine on hard runways, good to know I'm not alone ;) Cheers.
Lol. I need to learn how to post a 360 video. My friend and I were just discussing wobble yesterday. It seems to be most noticeable when our tires are worn out. I’m wondering if it’s a balance issue. I’ve got two new ones I may put on today. Every time I go to put them on, I end up flying instead. I’ll let you know.
Very sweet. The 360 camera gives something up perspective-wise but way offset by all the different shots you can show. Loved those colors coming of the ridge. Make me wonder how much is out there I never saw. Thanks! Drum
Hey Drum, good to hear from you. Thanks, I should’ve circled for a while over those colors. I’m excited to go up tomorrow and see what it looks like after all this snow !
Ioane Kirarahu. Yeah, there’s a lot of student training. We try to let them know not to worry about us, we’ll just fit in. I’ve been thinking of going over and talking to the school. It’s really the best way for us to fit into the pattern, especially as a two ship.
Love the wing tip view. Shows how beautiful your plane is going through the air. I have a rc plane that resembles your plane and I've been thinking of a repaint. Really like the red with a splash of gold on the nose. Looks awesome. Would you mind if I did mine as a twin. 👍👍😎👊✌
Hi RECKEM ROYS RC. Thank you. I bought the plane last March 30th, when I saw it, I knew I would buy it. It seems so many builders spend so much time building that when they get to the paint, they rush into some pretty funky paint schemes. So I was pretty happy to find a Rocket for sale that had a decent paint job. Your certainly welcome to copy anything you wish.. Thanks
That was amazing I have been wanting to get into ultra lights jyst to feel the freedom of flight and being detached from the earth and with your video and skills I feel like I've achieved that without leaving my living room!!! I have a question with an experimental plane do you have to have a license? Thank you and please make more videos!!
Hi Anthony. Yes you need a pilots license, unless the plane you’re interested in falls in the Light Sport Aircraft category (LSA). In that case, you just need a recreational pilots license and a valid drivers license. I believe light sport aircraft have to be under a certain weight and horsepower. Certainly worth looking into. Thanks for watching.
Great footage, never seen this before where we appear to be outside the aircraft entirely at times! But how come we do not see the boom on which the camera is mounted? Has that been removed digitally in the editing process?
Hi Stewart. I hadn’t seen it either till a couple months ago when I heard someone talking about a 360 camera. But, the cameras have been around for a number of years. The boom gets edited out by the camera. No talent on my part - I just turn it on. This particular camera is an Insta360 one X2. I also tried the GoPro Max, but quickly sent it back after one flight. I’m still making up my mind on the Inst360. It’s not without problems, I’ve already sent one back, the company is difficult to work with
@@WheelsInTheSky Thanks Wheels! Wasn't it Arthur C. Clarke who said "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic"? I think he was right!
@Rob Carter. Lol. Lots of amazing country out here. Where are you at? I’ll fly southern Utah till it gets too hot, then head up to Idaho. Probably be camping in Idaho in July. So much country to explore! Thanks for watching.
Thanks Steve. Yeah, it seems to come and go. I notice it most when braking at end of roll out. I’ll change my tires and see what happens. I’ve got the wooden dampers though. Last time I changed my worn out tires, it made a big difference.
@@WheelsInTheSky Central South Dakota., Got an RV8, but not the scenery or friends as seen in your video! Enjoyed watching, it looked like SO much fun, thanks!
Hi Robin. Thanks. You know, I was just thinking I should do a quick video on how I mounted my camera. But, rather than wait, if you give me an email, I can send a few pic’s. Is that your RV8 in camo? Looks nice!
Hey Shane, I think Joe is rubbing off on me, the rolls are a bit addictive! Sorry about the audio. I did this on my iPad, computer’s been in the shop for ever. I’ll fix it on the next one. Fly Monday or Tuesday?
Hello Sir Hamsalot. They are pretty similar. Probably the biggest difference would be the engine. RV8’s have a 4 cylinder and Rockets have a 6 cylinder engine. After that, the most noticeable is probably the windscreen and canopy. The Rocket windscreen has a more gradual slope and the aft portion of the canopy then blends into the fuselage. Whereas the canopy on the RV8 appears to sit on top of the plane. Thanks for watching!
Hi John, I’m using the Insta360 one x2. It seems to do a good job of stabilization, even with the camera bouncing around. It also has a good stitch line. I tried the GoPro Max. I probably didn’t give it a fair chance, tested it on a real bumpy day. Stabilization was bad and stitch line awful. GoPro said it would work better if instead of using the GoPro app, use the GoPro Player app. I sent the camera back and bought a second Insta. I think the only reason the Insta is better is because it’s newer technology- just came out. Whereas the Max has been out for some time. Just my amateur opinion. Thanks for watching.
@@WheelsInTheSky As much as I would love to build one, I have a feeling I’ll end up buying as well. But that’s a ways off. Left the Navy, now in college. 31 isn’t too old to get into flying, right? Haha
Hey Maverick. They seem to range between $120 to $190k. The Harmon Rockets seem to be a bit more on the lower end and the F1 a bit higher. I’m not sure why, the Harmons are quite nice.

@@davidcoppock3017 I will David. Thanks . It’s great your getting back to flying! I thought I was done when I retired from the airlines, but after 6 months, I felt the strong urge to revisit the flying of my youth. I have to say, it’s pure contentment flying low level !
Excellent!!!!
Thanks Vlodek9.
Beautiful!
Thanks Shimmy J. I’m lucky to live near some amazing countryside. And great weather, especially in the summer, nearly perfect every day!
I think I’ll have to use a combination of cameras. That 360 is cool but not the total answer.
Your videos give me serious envy. You are a lucky man!
Hi MotoFlightGuy. Yes, when I start complaining too much, I remind myself, life could be worse. Thanks! Ps. Don’t get envy, get RV. Lol.
@@WheelsInTheSky haha that may be the best advice I've ever had!
Excellent.
Hi mp schaefer. Thank you. Glad you watched!
Do you every have difficulties with some of the local pilots not being familiar with a military-style overhead landing pattern?
Ioane Kirarahu. Yeah, there’s a lot of student training. We try to let them know not to worry about us, we’ll just fit in. I’ve been thinking of going over and talking to the school. It’s really the best way for us to fit into the pattern, especially as a two ship.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks Alex 005
Thanks
So awesome.. I wish I could do this.
Hi Jonny, I’m kind of an average pilot, so I’m sure you can. It’s mostly about having a plane. I’d recommend looking at something in the RV series.
Thanks for watching.
another home run!!!
Thanks William!
Did you install the camera bracket during the build? got to find a way to get this view for a beach low level 👍
Hey 4Fan Flyer. It’s just a 360 camera on a boom, about 4 to 4.5 feet in front of my, left wing tip.
@@stewartw.9151 Well said. That’s what it is, magic!
Now I’ve got to go Colorado Utah and please don’t post any pictures or video of Idaho it’s to far .. your videos and flying are amazing sir .
@Rob Carter. Lol. Lots of amazing country out here. Where are you at?
I’ll fly southern Utah till it gets too hot, then head up to Idaho. Probably be camping in Idaho in July. So much country to explore! Thanks for watching.
Great Video looks like you have a little titanium gear shake
Thanks Steve. Yeah, it seems to come and go. I notice it most when braking at end of roll out. I’ll change my tires and see what happens. I’ve got the wooden dampers though. Last time I changed my worn out tires, it made a big difference.
Where in the world is this?
Hi Peter. East of Salt Lake City, Utah. Where are you located?
@@WheelsInTheSky Central South Dakota., Got an RV8, but not the scenery or friends as seen in your video! Enjoyed watching, it looked like SO much fun, thanks!
@@WheelsInTheSky I would love to relocate but don't think my FP O-360 RV-8 would do well there.
@@jcheck6 Yeah, our field elevation is 5000’. But one guy has an RV8 with 160 hp and there are a couple of RV6’s that have lower hp.
These views are stunning! Can you show a picture of how you mounted that camera?
Sure Valentino. Let me work on putting something together. Meanwhile if you give me an email, I can send some pics.
I second that! What’s the setup??
Loving the content and the rocket looks sharp!
Would like to see pic of your camera arm setup.
Hi Robin. Thanks. You know, I was just thinking I should do a quick video on how I mounted my camera. But, rather than wait, if you give me an email, I can send a few pic’s. Is that your RV8 in camo? Looks nice!
Hi Wheels, I never received your email. Any chance you could send pics to RV8AV8R at gmail dot com?
@@StudioRV8 yes, I’ll do it right now.
Be sure to let me know if you don’t get it.
Wheels,
You’re camera is cool. Glad to be in your footage.
Question, do you like aileron rolls? I’m going to have to try and keep up.....
Hey Shane, I think Joe is rubbing off on me, the rolls are a bit addictive! Sorry about the audio. I did this on my iPad, computer’s been in the shop for ever. I’ll fix it on the next one. Fly Monday or Tuesday?
@@WheelsInTheSky I am in town Monday and Tuesday let’s go!
@@shanejohnson4745 Perfect !
I really enjoyed this one! What IAS you running down low? Thanks
Hi Buck, usually around 150 to 180kts
@@WheelsInTheSky Thanks. That RV-3 looks like it does pretty well keeping up with the group :)
@@buckbuchanan5849 yeah, it does remarkably well, little slow going up hill, but great the rest of the time. Neat little plane!
What is the difference between an rv-8 and an f1 rocket they look extremely similar, cheers
Great videos. What 3d camera do you use?
@@WheelsInTheSky ....thank you!!
How's the heater?
Lol. It works. I pretty much just turn it on full blast and leave it on all winter as long as it’s not too cold out , I’m pretty comfortable.
Great looking plane! How much was the build?
Hi JR, I didn’t build, I’m the third owner...I figured it would take me forever and I wanted to fly now. Bought it almost a year ago.
@@WheelsInTheSky As much as I would love to build one, I have a feeling I’ll end up buying as well. But that’s a ways off. Left the Navy, now in college. 31 isn’t too old to get into flying, right? Haha
@JR
Never to late! I joined the airline at35.Enjoy college. I was always one of the older guys in my classes!
How much does your plane costs (f1 rocket)?
Hey Maverick. They seem to range between $120 to $190k. The Harmon Rockets seem to be a bit more on the lower end and the F1 a bit higher. I’m not sure why, the Harmons are quite nice.
Bob Ross quit painting and took up flying...
Lol. Well, you could do both, but if you only do one- make it flying. I just got back from the local airport mostly hung out, little flying. I enjoy just going hanger to hanger, talking airplane. It’s been a good day! Thanks for watching.
