Western Maryland 1309: Allegheny Winter Freight Service (4K)

- For the first time since 2016, a steam-powered photo special was held at the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. Hosted by Trains Magazine, the charter featured former Chesapeake & Ohio 2-6-6-2 Mallet #1309 pulling a 12-car freight consist up the steep grades of the old Western Maryland trackage. This was 1309's first photo charter at the railroad, and the first of many to come.
Filmed on February 26th and 27th, 2022.
A great video of a beautiful old locomotive. About six years ago I learned how to operate a steam locomotive at the NC Transportation Museum. I took a smaller locomotive down the tracks and back three times, and the best part was I got to blow the whistle as often as I wanted!! If the 1309 is ever under staffed let me know. Or I was even thinking it would be great to be a hobo and ride in one of the freight cars for just one day. This video really stirred my senses!!! Thank you!

My grandfather used to always tell me stories about how these would shake the ground coming past him, hauling tremendous coal drags in and out of where he once lived in Ohio. There was even a W&LE line by his house as well where they themselves used to pretty iconic steam power.

Awesome to finally see 1309 in operation. Is it just me or does she seem to be a little out of time when working hard?
I noticed that too. Not entirely sure what's causing the engine to chuff that way. Plenty of others at the charter commented on it as well.
That’s just compounding. Since the rear cylinders and front cylinders aren’t in time with eachother, and in compounding the rear cylinder exhaust is feeding the front cylinders, it can sound out of time. They usually have 1309 in simple, where both cylinders are being fed by the boiler, when starting so that’s why at low speeds she sounds in time, and the fact she sounds in time when simpling proves that she’s in time.
@@CaptainCrutch thanks for the info. I didn't know that particular engine could be run simple. Doesn't have as loud a bark in compound however I'm sure it sound awesome in person. Will be visiting sometime this year.
@@firegrateproductions There's a fellow YT guy who got a video of 1309 switching between simple and compound, at first it sounds like a bad wheel slip a period of quiet while the steam builds up in the pipe feeding the front engine then the engine starts the out of time chuffing. I had the video on in the background and it took me off guard... I never heard anything like that before.
The timing is out, has nothing to do with compounding.
