    To be certain, this video was not meant to be shot at Denon. I enjoy their AVR's and hope to get my hands on some new models at some point.
    Some people buy these higher performing AVR's without realizing everything they can do. I still don't know all of the tricks myself, but I know that running Audyssey is time well spent, especially if you're sure to follow the directions.
    Some people may pass negative judgement over 1-2 settings that are easy to correct. Here are my videos for setting up my AVR and which settings I use. Keep in mind, these are my preferences, not "THE" set in stone way to do it.

    Dynamic EQ certainly brings a lot to the table. If you never run Audyssey, at least with my AVR, Dynamic EQ is not an option.

    I stopped buying warranties 25yrs ago and I did the math. If I bought warranties for every product I own over $500 it would have cost me over 35k and in that time I would have claimed about 4k in repairs or replacements. They want you to buy the warranty for a reason.

    I hated Audyssey when I first got my Denon X3400H but that is because I ran it wrong. I decided to buy a real tripod and run it again 2 weeks ago and its AMAZING! It transformed my HT like nothing else. I cannot believe what I was missing out on. Run it right and it will do wonders for your HT.

      Great point, done wrong it makes more of a mess than it fixes!
      Importantly, you don't want to take samples too far apart. Audyssey recommends no further than 2 feet from the first sample.
      Check out my Bass Hack video series. Changing crossover, gain settings and subwoofer distance values can further improve the overall sound.

    When I had lower quality front speakers, Audyssey made a huge improvement when listening in stereo. When I upgraded to audiophile speakers ($5K/pair) it barely sounded any different after room correction. In surround mode, the center speaker blends much more smoothly after calibration though. It also allows you to use different brands of center/rear and still sound cohesive. I would never buy an AV receiver that doesn't have top notch room correction these days.

    Finally pulled the trigger on a PB1000. Got to say the difference is huge between this and any sub I have owned before. It makes everything sound realistic, more cinematic.Made me realise how boomy my old subs were. My old subs got down to 30hz so I always thought was it really worth going down to 20hz but now realise it’s not just going down to 20hz that makes these subs special its everything they do up to the cross over point that is head and shoulders above what I had before. Effortless power, realistic sound, even seems to make the mids better on the main speakers, I guess because it’s not swamping the sound will bloated bass. My advise to anyone on the side lines, just buy them, it’s the best upgrade I have ever made to my home theatre

I should have definitely bought this disc a lot sooner. It's absolutely amazing how much different the picture looks when you get the contrast and the black level right and the color . I am absolutely amazed. Great video on microphone calibration. I always use the microphone on the calibration to get the levels and distance is right. You are absolutely right on that video called Sarah on a hammock this is a perfect way to set up the motion smoothing you are able to see how to set it up. I definitely recommend this spear & munsil this to anyone that needs your TV to look better.

    Good thoughts on room EQ. It has a big role in making it work with a rooms issues.
    I really like D&M products. I was a Pioneer Elite guy for 30 years and I feel that Audyssey is a step up these days.
    I have seen your point about the level of room EQ on the equipment. I have a Marantz 5010 and it does a great job with the room it is in. I also recently picked up a Marantz 7704 Pre/Pro and the level of options and fine tuning on it is awesome. Love my room now.

    Thanks for the video. I've used room correction for a few years or so now. Starting with the bog-standard Audyssey Mult-EQ on my Onkyo TX-NR626, and now since my upgrade to the Denon x6300H, Audyssey's flagship Mult-EQ XT32 with Dual SubEQ. I like Audyssey, and whilst XT32 is world's apart in superior room correction over the basic Mult-EQ, both are beneficial and better than not using them. I once used Dynamic Volume for some time with my Onkyo, but since changing rooms, along with changing to the Denon AVR, Dynamic Volume has always been deactivated.
    Anyways, as for Audyssey DynamicEQ, I agree with you. Personally, it's absolutely necessary for any content mixed at reference levels (so movies), and I've used it also for numerous big budget modern-day TV dramas I bought on Blu-Ray and again it sounds awesome. Personally I don't see why it's such a controversial issue with audio enthusiasts, since Audyssey clearly did their homework on this one and without DynamicEQ activated almost everything sounds lifeless. However, for non-reference level mixed content (so for example computer/video games - it must be deactivated for my PS4), its a big "No-no", but then DynamicEQ isn't designed, nor indeed, intended for use with non-reference level mixed content, and even Audyssey would advise it being deactivated for such content.
    I've read many times on different audiophile forums and threads that some people use the room correction settings for delays etc. but then spurn DynamicEQ (even for reference level content), instead opting to make their own adjustments manually. Whilst there will always be a facet of subjectivity involved as we tend to hear and like things differently to one another, I wonder what makes these people think they can better and more accurately replace DynamicEQ and its capable, complex algorithms (designed purposefully to objectively maintain octave-to-octave balance in the sound-field when reference level content is replayed back at a volume below reference level) by making their own adjustments based on their own hearing?
    In summary, the moral of this long-winded post is, just use Audyssey DynamicEQ (for reference mixed content), it's knows what it's doing and it sounds bloody awesome.

      You might look into laser therapy. LLLT, or low level laser therapy has made a huge difference for me. No pain pills for 2 years now. It's expensive, and you would need a home unit (office visits would be way too expensive, I treat myself daily) but it has reduced the pain dramatically.
      Still have the brain fog, flare ups, etc...but I have a way to dial back the intensity of the pain to a mild discomfort, as opposed to the usual panic inducing "blackness". It's straight up sci fi medical treatment.

      +Len Ward Look for a 5 hertz frequency, super pulsed laser, class 1 is safe and less expensive. I've tried numerous frequencies (the parallel with audio is striking BTW) and 5 hertz seems to address the fibromyalgia pain the best. Frequency sweeps are good too. 5-250 hertz and 5-1000 hertz are good too, but for me 5 hertz has to be involved.
      Super pulsed fire the laser on the order of nanoseconds, so high power, incredibly short duration. Safer, and penetrates the tissue the deepest. When I finally treated my hips, it was a striking improvement. Didn't feel so "rusty".

She's always mistaken for a Great Pyrenees because she's female (less of a main) and the nomadic type (Do-Khyi), rather than the more chunky type that look like huge Chows (Tsang-Khyi). I know her breeder, and her mother, father, and sister have the more traditional coloring.
      Her attitude and temperament is 100% Tibetan Mastiff. Impressive dog, but definitely not a starter dog, she tries to play Jedi mind tricks on me, but I'm wise to her shenanigans. Very old soul, with a penchant for mischief.
      The black one is a Newfoundland with a little bit of Great Pyrenees. He's a loveable clown, but not nearly as complex and intelligent as the Tibetan. Goofy Newfy absolutely applies. Both are pretty amazing.

    To answer your question, I purchased a Sunfire Cinema Grand 5-channel power amp hometheaterhifi.com/volume_3_3/v3n3f.html in March 1999. I've never had a moments issue with it and am still using it 7-days a week. I used to use preamps, but for the last 14 years, I've been buying higher-end receivers (preouts for each channel) when there were upgrades I was interesting in adding to my system. Much quicker and more economical upgrade path than preamps. Currently using a Marantz SR6009 with the Sunfire. It is getting harder to get a reasonably priced receiver w/preouts.

    Hi. My question isn't really related specifically to this video (it is a subwoofer question though!), but it seems like you reply to a lot of comments and I think you might be able to help me out.
    I've got a fairly modest hifi setup (Cambridge Audio stereo amp and some Mission bookshelf speakers) and I recently got a very good deal on a second hand Paradigm PDR-10 subwoofer (I think its about 10 years old but only cost £35). I have it connected to my amp using the sub's "speaker level input" connection in parallel with my speakers.
    I want to check that the phase is correct. I have it wired in phase with my speakers (+ & - going to the correct terminals on both speakers and sub). The sub doesn't have a phase switch and the vague "all models covered" manual just says "if you don't think the phase is correct then simply reverse the speaker wire connections". But how do I know if its correct or not? Should it be in phase or out of phase with my speakers? I'm struggling to tell the difference between either of them. What would be the default option in this situation?
    Sorry for my vague and rambling question. But you seem like the man to talk to about this!

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  Před 6 lety +1

      +Dan Xepha With that setup, you are pretty limited. I'm not picking on you or your setup, but if you don't have a dedicated subwoofer output, the tricks I employ are probably not available. I use distance to alter phase, rather than the phase switch or phase dial on the sub.
      You're going to want to try it both ways and trust your ears. Go with whichever polarity sounds the "fullest", so long as you don't have any ear pressure issues.
      If it sounds fuller, but it kind of hurts your ears, go with the more comfortable polarity. You can also physically alter the distance between the speakers and the sub.
      By moving the sub closer than the speakers, you're changing the relative timing, in theory the same way I do by changing the distance in the AVR.
      Try making the sub 4 feet closer than the speakers with the standard polarity. Then try 4 feet further away than the speakers (maybe by bringing the speakers forward and leaving the sub against the wall?). Play around with it and see what works best.
      I understand that the layout may not be viable long term, but it should be informative. Reversed polarity might do the trick, and maybe do a foot or two distance change to find the right position. I don't have a simpler suggestion, it's a lot of trial and error.
      I do all of these timing changes using the AVR, you just have to do it physically. Unless you have a sub output and all of the distance options, that would change the game.
      The right timing will sound the fullest while not causing discomfort.

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  Před 6 lety

      +Trinimack Ported subs do have an advantage as they are more efficient. Check out my gain hack video if you haven't already. With a sealed sub, increased gain is even more important. You can also adjust the PEQ's to add a little more output under 30 hertz, or take a little off above 60 hertz.
      The gain hack should help if you haven't already done it. -8 on the SB-16 and lower on the AVR subwoofer level to taste. You could even try -4 to -7 on the SB-16 I'm not sure about much more though. Almost never a good idea to run full tilt on audio gear.
      Whichever path you take, duals will make a substantial difference. I preferred dual PB-2000's to a single PB-16 Ultra, which is awesomeness incarnate. Duals have that much of an impact.
      As for the comparison, stay tuned.

    Denon AVR 3805 1st with auto eq. I have never plugged the mic in.Just use an SPL. meter and a tape measure. X2000 in bedroom ran auto eq after 2 years, Only one position. Will you test all four subs at once in Your room? Just for fun.

      +Toby Hines Plug that microphone in and get what you paid for, Haha! Use all of the "positions", the more "information" you give Audyssey, the better. Do you have the "Dynamic EQ" option available on the 3805?
      I won't be running the 4 subs together, I already sent the PB-16 Ultras back. Way too heavy to try it, when I already had the boxes taking up space for almost 2 weeks.
      My wife had dealt with my shenanigans long enough by the time I got them boxed up. She would have been cool about it, but she shouldn't have to be THAT cool. We had "Mount SVS" in here during the transition, 4 giant boxes in the living room, lol.
      I've run mismatched subs before with not much success, so it was a question I have already addressed. I did intend to get measurements of the PB-16 and PB 4000 together, but I ran out of gas. Surely a missed opportunity.

    i kind if have a love hate relationship with dynamic volume. sometimes, it can really increase clarity for dialogues and stuff but if you want to watch movies, and you watch them kind of loud anyways, dynamic volume basicly rapes my ears. you usually set volume based on the highest point for example explosions. but if dynamic volume is on, EVERYTHING becomes loud as hell. people literally screaming at me because the lowest point with dialogues are TOO loud now. its a really weird setting.

      It just has an artificial sound to me. Dynamic EQ is a great setting, it seems to add richness without any penalty. In contrast, Dynamic Volume seems to make it louder at lower volumes, which I believe was the intended effect, but it comes at an expense that I can't really articulate.

    • @CAv-lp2qk
      @CAv-lp2qk Před 6 lety

      Dynamic volume = compression, removes dynamic range (or difference between quiet and loud parts), useful for late night movie watching where you would be jumping for the remote and turn down a loud action sequence. Dynamic EQ = a sort of "loud" mode (or bass and treble boost) the lower the volume the more boost it applies. We hear lows and highs worse at lower levels. Useful for background music played at very low volumes. MultiEQ = room and speaker correction, is the one you want ON all the time :)

    • @CAv-lp2qk
      @CAv-lp2qk Před 6 lety

      Again dynamic EQ is a sort of "equal loudness" setting. For the actual theory behind this see "Fletcher-Munson curves"

      @Subwoofer101  Před 6 lety

      +Rj Don't go from 2 to 1. You'd be much better off with dual PB-12 Plus. Going from 2 subwoofers to a single has been a repeated disappointment for me and other viewers, it doesn't matter how awesome the subwoofer is.
      I preferred dual PB-2000's over a single PB-16 Ultra. All day long. The PB-16 Ultra is easily the superior subwoofer, but duals are THAT important.
      If you haven't seen my gain hack video, turning up the subwoofer gain to 2-3 o'clock and turning the AVR subwoofer level down to compensate can really open up your subs.

      Any complex product, like cars and electronics, will fail at some point, it's just a matter of numbers. I like Denon and Marantz a lot, especially Denon's X Series.
      As you point out the Audyssey is a great function, especially XT32. Failures aren't that common, but they do occur, across ALL brands. I wouldn't personally swear off Denon. My X2000 has been 100% trouble free.
      My X6200 was a refurbished unit, so the initial problem might have been missed. You kind of have to expect that a refurbished unit might still have issues.

      I bought my Denon 1610 in 2011, and it still works today. I find that "luck of the draw" plays a large part in electronics, regardless of brand. Sometimes you end up with one of the small % that doesn't last reasonably long.

    When I ran YPAO on my old Yamaha RX-A610, the parametric EQ could not be used. Room correction adjusts all three aspects of each frequency band according to the standard the manufacturer set.
    I had adjusted the PEQ while listening info to The Police in stereo, it sounded GREAT, until I played some other music lol!
    YPAO on that AVR is crap compared to Audysseeyyyyy (ugh) XT32 with Sub EQ on my x7200. When playing music, if I use “bypass L/R”, my Paradigms sound horrible. I have a very bad room for audio, 7 foot ceiling, stairs off to the side, 50’ish x 15, laundry room without a door, and other odd things. I’m impressed with what Audyseey has done.

      Subwoofer 101 I went from the A610 to a Denom AVR-X4520ci new old stock. After s few months and two trips to ABT in Chicago to avoid shipping fees, it turned out to be a lemon. After a good week of negotiations with Denon, they replaced a Flagship with a Flagship. The 4520 had XT32 with no SubEQ. That did a really good job. But not as good as the x7200 does having SubEQ.
      The addition of SubEQ makes a huge difference for those of use with extremely minimal on-sub adjustments like two or three phase settings, volume and frequency pass (which the AVR takes control of anyway when using the LFE RCA jack). With the subs you’ve been using, they have a ridiculous amount of on-board adjustments. That is when using REW and the mic are extremely beneficial!
      May I suggest doing a video using the mic and REW for the PB4000s?
      A friend of mine recently added another PB2000, he’s considering getting REW and buying the mic. With those minimal adjustments, I don’t think he will benefit at all, as he uses Audyssey on his Denon x4200.

      I just got my AVR back from the shop for the second time since January. My other AVR has been fine, just dumb luck. I've also had two TV's replaced on aftermarket warranty.
      TV's and AVR's, I'll always get the longest warranty available. Big ticket items that if they fail it's an expensive hit. All three occurred after factory warranty expired.
      I agree that if you pay that much, you "should" have no problems. Failures happen to even the best equipment, and the more complicated, the more likely to get a failure.
      I'm not saying that you "must" get an aftermarket warranty. I'm just saying it's saved me close to $4,000 in the last few years. So far it's been a pretty safe bet.
