I love Pike, I love Grog. When they get together it's guaranteed fun. I just love their foster- siblings friendship/love so much. It is so real. They make you forget about your problems. They lift you up just when you most need it. This is a silly cut version of such moment in Critical Role Episode 94. I dubbed it Late Night with Pike and Grog because of the setting it happens in and the moments that lead to it. Also to avoid spoilers.

@@blazinkid5178 Oh I know all that and I love him very dearly but he is also a little bastard man. A Bard's Lament is one of my favorite C1 episodes because it's so compelling and upsetting and so true to form. Really, really excellent roleplay, but also, like... rude.

There's a dichotomy I'll outline immediately: "whilst they never asked, he never told"; a point brought up by Vex and Scanlan during the argument. Scanlan risked flesh and blood for them with disregard for his own needs, they valued his skills more than him yet, even then, he was the last thought of anyone in the party when shit hit the fan because they assumed too much.
I get why he was so angry, they didn't know the driving points behind his call to adventure, a simple desire for family. He acted selflessly on their behalf's before knowing the world threat but the problem for his friends. When Percy went for vengance, the team followed, when Pike needed to descend into hell, the team followed, when Keyleth needed to get revenge, the team followed. When Scanlan needed time, the team chastised him for being unreasonable but on an individual basis, there's a bit to unpack.
Vax is equally a reckless narcissist and an earnest and caring man but Scanlan's had his back so often, he took it for granted. But I think Vax said what he needed to and vented before Scanlan left so he had no qualms with letting Scanlan go because he knew what he needed to reflect on.
Keyleth really didn't connect with Scanlan beyond a surface level and for all Keyleth talks about family, she never really took time to understand him as much as the others. I think that's because she's trepidatious towards emotion and doesn't know how to handle it well.
Percy was angry because of the potential information leakage and the lost of an asset, not a friend. But that's because he's very much logical and secreative, he really doesn't know how best to show concern for the man behind the tools.
Grog was fully betrayed, he loved Scanlan and was always willing to help him out; respected his wishes Scanlan essentially hid from him and didn't even call. Scanlan essentially walked out on the only one who cared the whole way, Grog felt so hurt, he couldn't even beat Lionel's ass for it. He lost his drinking/whoring buddy and best friend , being replaced on two fronts, by the bardbarian and his daughter.
Pike was bitter because Scanlan shat on everything she was, Pike saves lives and does the best good she can. I'm kinda surprised that she didn't see past his bullshit about "the weird magic" and see the fear he has of leaving his daughter but she rightfully slapped him because he didn't have faith in his family. But worst of all Pike never got to respond nor even say goodbye, Scanlan professed love extensively before seemingly two-timing her out of nowhere
Vex gave up the chance to contribute to her friends resurrection because she thought it in his best interest and was chastised because of a promise she wasn't aware of, she was rightfully pissed. Yet Vex was the only one who immediately understood, reflected and improved from the situation, she saw that there was something missing.
Out of everyone, she took the most time to see past the outburst and do better, she called her brother out when he joking picked up Scanlan, she actually took care to learning about his replacement Tary and she was the driving force in mending the broken party back together.
Even when he came back, most of them initially soured at how he returned; only the twins were truly happy. I think that's because they, out of everyone, really tried to better understand Scanlan's plight.
It's amazing that she subtly revealed she was jealous of Vex there when the scene started. She originally loved Percy but once Vex started to outright date the man Pike had to just watch as her original crush was taken...then she realized just how badly she missed scanlan. For a character who wound up missing a lot of story beats...she was surprisingly dynamic.

Early on when asked about Scanlan, Ashley stated that Pike was into someone else. There was of course a lot of speculation including someone from the ship she had sailed with before the stream, but many people did deduce it was Percy. Even much later Pike told Scanlan that she liked someone else. And yeah confirmed later that she had been into Percy for a long time.

I like the implication that Grog and Pike shared a bedroom for a little while. Pike in a smaller bed and Grog taking two gnome beds for himself. Like...that makes me smile like an idiot.
Grog is like 8 feet tall and jacked, 2 Gnome beds would barely be enough for a Human let alone a Goliath like Grog, he would need 4-5 Gnome beds but at a certain point you would just get a bed made especially made but seeing as Grog never sleeps in a bed i think he just slept on a pile of hay or pillows on the floor
Now I picture Grog curling up at the foot of Pike's bed like a puppy.

@@BornAScout it's basically canon at this point anyway. I mean Vax once said he kept Grog company because he was Gnomeless at that point and Travis cries that it made it real again.

I love these moments where we get to see Ashley shine. Everyone else gets so much bandwidth compared to her but she can totally steal a scene when she wants. Brilliant improv chops.
Agree, she had so little attendence but slayed so hard, that Pike is my favorit character by far
I hope somebody animates this scene. I keep picturing Pike so tiny compared to Grog as they drink themselves to sleep.

This and their study session are maybe my favourite moments of either campaign, Travis and Ashley just work so well as a team, with their playful innocence, it makes me wanna cry
That response "No one." has to be one of the most wonderfully, brutal, painful things I've ever heard acted. Like wow wow wow!
I adore Travis for setting that up got her, just as much as her delivery, so brutal and it hit home hard!

This is why character deaths or retirements are far more interesting than non-stop plot armour.
Sure but, in D&D, there's more to it than that. Here two months after your comment, we're in the final arc of Vox Machina's story. When someone dies or retires, it's going to be meaningful, but the player still needs to be part of the game meaning a new character needs to be introduced and there just isn't time for that. That's why it, from a narrative standpoint, will be more satisfying to see every character (or no character) make it to the end or at least the final confrontation.

The way Vax is effectively killed off yet still can remain part of the story is a very neat solution.

Liam's "testify" cracks me up every time.
1- This is probably my favorite Ashley moment of campaign 1 (the drawings on vacation is close, but this is just so good) 2- I love any time they can get Liam to do the full hyena howling laugh like at 2:05, it's just irresistibly cute. 3- Shame on you Sam for what you did to Pike!

When I miss Scanlan I walk around eating chicken with no pants on.

God, these guys have such great comedic timing, and they're all such good friends. Laura's reaction on, "I'm tired" just kills me, as does Liam's reactions throughout the video.
I live and work in LA, and I'll tell you that it is filled with the most well-intentioned flakes you've ever met. Everyone always wants to get together, no one actually does. For these friends to get together, once a week, every week, for (I've lost track of how many years), is a miracle. You can see how close they all are as friends, and you can feel all the shared experiences... not just as characters in the game, but as friends outside the game.
The look on Sam's face as Pike says the thing about Scanlan says it all really XD

So happy to have our Ash-O-lee back! The scenes with her travis and sam are some of my most cherished and favorite moments. Going back through the series, I can see the events that led to Scanlin leaving. He was even justified in some of what he said, and not everyone is going to react well to FREAKING DYING.
That being said... I would love to have him back with the crew. Terry is growing on me, and I get that sometimes you just want to change up the kind of character you are playing. But I want the three musketeers back together again.
If anyone, I would like to see Percy have a big death and failed resurrection to drive the point of their mortality home to others in the group. Plus Talisen has stated that he has a whopper of a character lined up in the wings & I'm curious on what he would bring into play.

And yes, I missed prankster Vax as well, but that escalated SO quickly! I never thought Vex would sic Trinket on him, but then again, he never caused their Hotel room to be ruined either. So good!
Plus, there's the issue of the blood curse. That's super creepy, and I can't wait to find out what it involves.

I just looooove so many moments with Ashley. She doesn't speak a lot, but when she does it's usually either hilarious or heartbreaking. It's sad there's barely any of it in campaign two.

I thought about how I want to see this in the animation. Then I realized that this is one of those scenes that actually doesn't need to be animated, as Travis and Ashley perfectly display everything exactly as it was. No need for theater of the mind here.

I watched this clip before watching any other Critical Role and thought it was so good, that I started watching the show from the beginning.

I thought she missed him because he died and for the longest time, I dreaded that. Really though, that breakup was probably even more heartbreaking..

Pike and Grog interactions are always so fun. They play off each other so well.

Grog and Pike together were the best parts of campaign 1 for me
I just became a critter for ExU and C3, so everything I know about C1/C2 is from clip compilations (and now LoVM)... but I'm quickly understanding why Sam once said Ashley is his favorite group member. She is *so* talented at both improv and comedy, and she can make you feel your feelings even while making you laugh. Ash-o-lee Johnson is a global treasure and must be protected.

I love the way you edit these highlights! These moments are enhanced so much by the tight focus and by seeing the bits of banter and reactions inbetween that's usually too quiet or too quick to notice, but now stands out. Please domore, they're fantastic!
Aww, thank you so much. I definitely want to do more but one of my main hard disks got corrupted and I am also recovering from surgery. So I thought once I recover a bit and get new drives, restore some files I would go back to editing videos like this. I have also a plan to do a video Titled "Vax and his stuff" Compilation of Twin moments and every time Vax gave something away and got back. It's a fun video I kinda want to make it so that It would shine Vax's true love for his sister, Kiki and the people around. There are some scenes where it is actually expressed this way so putting them all together will be fun. :D

You can barely here it but Sam says " that's the saddest things." And Taliesin says " terrible your terrible" looking at sam
Until now I never really noticed how much of a size difference there is between Travis and Ashley
you can see the pain on everybody's faces as Pike (Ashley) tries to contact Scanlan
This will forever be my favorite scene from Campaign 1.

Awe man I remember when I first really got into critical role and Scanlan had just come back to life and then left the group and then some episodes later this happened😂😂 I love both campaigns but I miss these moments a lot❤
