The most common cause of CD playback issues is dust on the laser lens. If you have some, you could try squirting some compressed air into the opening. You should be able to see the lens with the CD drawer open and using a small torch to light the area up. If this doesn't help, you'll need to open up the case and clean the lens with a cotton bud (very carefully) by hand.

I also have this system in a Light Ash / Beech Colour.
FYI I can remember seeing this system on its release as far back as 1981 so it's much earlier than 1997, the Minidisc unit will have followed later, maybe around the millenium.
It was groundbreaking at that time as it was the beginning of the "Designer Trend" towards Mini Hi-Fi and was very expensive at £650 new back then. That price included a Glass Stand and matching base shelf which I have and definitely completes the whole designer look.
My only critisism is the brightness of the display unit when it's switched Off and displaying the date and time, even at its highest setting of number 5 it's still far too dim, that maybe down to its age so you have to accept that and live with it. My Cassette Deck has started refusing tapes and ejects them straight after loading but again I put it down to age and I don't play tapes very often anyhow. For a 45 yr old system I still think it's way ahead of its time looks wise.
A rival to the Pioneer along with a few others was the Marantz Arch, another Mini Designer System which I like, very exclusive, rare and expensive and on sale at the same time and around the same price. 😊

There's no chance this came out in the early eighties as the first cd player was 1982,it was 97 as for your tape deck there is a small belt on the side of the tray that will need replaced as it goes rigid, even try putting it under warm water and it will help

@@stuartmacgregor4563 Thanks for your advice regarding the rigid belt on the Cassette unit. Yes, I look to be mistaken about the release date of the Pioneer, I'm probably confusing it with another brand.

I have this same system in light ash wood. Did you ever find out why the CD unit didn't work. Mine will play for a few minutes then, shuts down. I'm beginning to think it is an overheating issue. It does it on the radio too. But if I put a household cooling fan at the back of the unit it stays on. Interested to know, if you got to the bottom of the issue.
