"Japanese Lacquer Craftsman" Who Show Their Skills in Kyoto

“TSUTSUMI ASAKICHI URUSHITEN” was founded in 1909. This is a workshop where the sap collected from Japanese lacquer trees is refined into Japanese lacquer for use in handicrafts. The managing director of the store, TAKUYA TSUTSUMI, has developed a new technique. It's a spray paint. Using that technique, he painted Japanese lacquer on his bike and his skateboard, which he loves.
He felt a sense of crisis as demand for Japanese lacquer dwindled year by year. He collected information on Japanese lacquer tappers and nursery schools that use Japanese lacquer, and published a booklet called "Japanese lacquer NO IPPO".
TAKUYA's hobbies are skateboarding, snowboarding and surfing. "Japanese lacquer" is a product of nature. He is searching for a way to connect it with outdoor sports and spread it to the world. TAKUYA visited an Australian craftsman who makes the wooden board ARAIYA, which is considered to be the prototype of surfboards. He suggested ARAIYA Japanese lacquer to the craftsman. A self-produced movie covering the production process is scheduled to be released on the website from December.
Together with the lacquerer KEIKO NISHIMURA, he is also working on a project to revive the modern "lacquer artist" that is intended for use by children.
