I planted Vanity verbena from seed, and I treated it like I do most warm season annual seeds. I lined the bottom of a clamshell container with two layers of moist paper towel, "sowed" the seed on it, and put it in the cabinet above my freezer, where it stays warm. Most of the seeds sprouted in 5 to 8 days. I planted the sprouted seeds in cell packs and grew them on until they were large enough to plant in the ground. They were very easy to grow, but they grew a lot taller than the Vanity variety's advertised height of about 30 inches. The flowers were prolific and beautiful, but the plants grew to about 4 feet tall, which was disappointing. Maybe the seed I bought was mislabeled, I don't know.

Thank you for this. It actually answers a question I've had for years, and that's why certain of my wildflowers never grow. I usually buy a mixed bag and sew it around our yard in spring, but I have a feeling now that certain of those seeds I never see grow need this cold stratification. I may try this with my wildflower mix this year and see how it goes!

To save space I usually use damp wash cloth in a ziploc bag and stratify them in the fridge too! Havent tried sowing directly into soil before… although I achieved 100% germination success with ziploc method of Asclepias tuberosa

I like your videos specially because there are not that many channels from PNW. I was just watching your aster video and you mentioned you will grow goldenrod. Did you do a video on it? How to plant, etc.?

Hi @gloriajbarry3356 ! 👋🏼👋🏼 Great question. We received these seeds as brand-ambassadors through our contacts at the National Garden Bureau (@NationalGardenBureau) . They send out a batch of seeds for us to try out every December/January and we are soooo grateful for the opportunity 🙏🏼🙏🏼. It's a surprise every year! 😮😀
