My anxiety/hypochondria usually was centered around having a stomach virus until I saw my dad died of a heart attack. Now allll my anxiety and hypochondria revolves around my heart. I’m terrified of heart attacks.

I am 64. At 16 my father died suddenly from a heart attack. I mention my age for a good reason, as you'll see. I had panic attacks at age 17, convinced I was dying of a heart attack. I went to a cardiologist who told me it was because of a mitral valve leak. Back then technology was primitive and Dr's being Dr's were sure at some point soon I'd need a valve replacement. Back then they didn't even discuss or know anything about panic attacks. Well, years later my thyroid went out (Graves disease) and I went into atrial fibrillation. Atrial fibrillation convinced me that the heart can beat erratic as hell and you'll be fine. 6 months it lasted and was actually more helpful than not. Recent testing on my heart (per Dr's insistence) showed that all 3 of my valves have a minor regurgitation. No, don't need valve replacement, but explains many of the mild pains, the rapid pulses and many things. Not to mention that this covid lockdown has a huge impact on our monkey minds to devise all sorts of bad thoughts. Our thoughts about our health are literally unlimited in scope. We are what we think, at least in the moment. And yes, thoughts of our fears can bring on pain, indistinguishable from actual physical pain. Perhaps I had both, I don't know. Also, recommend you not mention "Trigger warning", as that is just spreading a fear and you maybe accepting responsibility for other's fears. Allow others to decide whether they want to view your video, you are not responsible to censor content. Yes, I know your intentions were good. This is part of the hysteria being transferred in our culture today. Yes, I was a psycho-therapist for many years, and trigger warnings are for children, not adults. It's called censoring by the parent per age. Doesn't mean you have to talk about what disturbs you, and you don't need the extra burden of self-censoring which leads to increased anxiety. It just adds an additional loop to the viscous cycle AND a marketing draw for those who attract to the words themselves. Negative, scary stuff. I never thought I'd hit this age, was convinced I'd die young, yet am physically active and will probably die from something I never thought of. Humans have a very poor guage for risk assessment. To all you younger people, take note: I've been there, and am in very good physical health at 64. Thank you.

@@hajra637 It’s the fear of heart related diseases like heart attacks etc. My fear is mostly focused on high heart rates. I get very anxious when my heart rate goes high (which usually goes high due to fear). It’s a vicious cycle - fear of high heart rate, when heart rate goes up the fear increases which in turn increases the heart rate even more. You get what I’m trying to say? xD

I totally understand this feeling. I used to avoid PE when I was in school, and would take lifts/escalators instead of stairs. I've managed to get to a point that I can freely exercise without having this on my mind. Don't get me wrong, it never truly goes away, and sometimes even turning over in bed can cause these symptoms, but I try to remind myself that is is as psychological as it is physiological.
You are absolutely not alone in this - at all. I felt as if I was, too, especially being so young. I truly hope you find some peace with this :)

Just go and grab a finger pulse oximeter and if your resting heart rate isn't between 60-75 range or if its over 100. That is a red flag and you should visit your cardiologist to get checked. Also, be aware of so called 'Doctor' that tells you to ignore abnormally high resting heart rate. When I went to a ER once with a resting heart rate clocking in at 160bpm, the doctor told me to just ignore it and told me continue to go back to doing my regular activities. Hell he even told me to ignore it even if my resting heart rate is at 200bpm. He doesn't realize that when you have resting heart rate of 160bpm or 200bpm you physically can't do anything because you would feel shortness of breath and dizziness. I just can't pretend to ignore and continue doing my usual activities with a 160bpm or a 200bpm heart rate.

I don’t know what has made this as bad as it is. But it’s completely out of control. It does make me feel a little better knowing I’m not the only one who suffers from this. I really hope you can find some peace with your anxiety and that your symptoms ease. Healthy hearts do that even in top athletes. It’s scary I know, but just have faith in your heart - it’s stronger and more perfect than you know.

Thankyou for sharing this story, health anxiety sucks, mine is completely associated with my heart and nothing else, just constant chest pain happened to me out of the blue at 19 (23 now) and since then won't go away, logically I know my heart is healthy but when those pains or pressure kick in it becomes front and centre, can't concentrate on anything and the more I try to ignore it the more it invades my mind, like a song stuck in your head. My hardest time porcessing that is anxiety is that I don't feel anxious leading upto the chest pain it's more like the chest pain makes me anxious and to add to it I never have an accelerated heart rate or shortness of breathe when I feel panicked which makes it harder to convince myself it's anxiety since I'm missing a lot of the key anxiety symptoms.

Thank you for this video Lucy. I've been fighting with the same exact problems and fears for about 6 years now, and it's draining. I am trying my hardest though to wake up into a new day and try to believe the doctors that my heart is fine, even though my anxiety shouts at me almost 24/7. Thank god for the random days when my brain goes quiet. My obsessiveness is so bad, that I willingly took up an antipsychotic medication to help me to get the worst edge off, the stress during my own spirals just piles to such unbelievable levels that being without medication ever again is not even a question for me. I'd rather walk to the nearest river and stay there if I had to choose between no meds and on meds.
Still hasn't fixed anything permanently though, but I'm working on it. Sucks that the doctors appointments with actual progress are few and far between in my country's "free" side of healthcare.
Also the self-fulfilling prophecy part hits different. I feel the exact same way, talking out loud, even to my self, actually feels like I'm saying "Voldemort" when I try to say something about my heart. It's insane. I could go on with this comment forever but I'll end it here, thanks for the amazing video.

My story begins when I actually had a heart traumatic event which was going into AFib, my heart was going a million beats per mins and I didnt know what was going on. The point that got me to call EMS was when I felt like I was going to pass out. Whe. They came they quickly said its AFib and well get you to the ER immediately. My heart went back to normal after 3 days the care was fantastic. I didnt need to get cardioverted or oblated. I'm one of the lucky few. But now I gained a huge panic and anxiety disorder from it. I constantly run to the ER when I feel a certain way. And its very embarrassing for me because all they keep telling me is your heart is perfect and healthy and you have nothing wrong it's just anxiety. Idk what to do anymore. My life changed completely. God bless you all trust me we are all in this together love ya.

Luckily I have the sweetest endo bc after the first few times of going there and telling the nursed about my blood pressure anxiety my endo decided he'd be the one to take my blood pressure. And he'd kinda casually and sneakily do it while talking to me😭 the worst thing ever was getting an echocardiogram and hearing and seeing my heart swish on the screen, wanted to cry honestly. All my bloodwork and check ups came back normally fine (except cholesterol being slightly more than the limit). However, reading or listening different cases of heart diseases as an after covid symptom and/or many sudden heart attacks even to young people, it's freaking me out. But I also started to worry about being sedated and when they are monitoring my heart they might find a problem with my heart. I never had cardiophobia prior to this. Then a few days or so before the test I started getting chest pains, very mild here or there. Then I got my colonoscopy of course I didn’t have colon cancer, then the next few days after I kept obsessing over the chest pain that I got, then I got worse, now I feel it like at least half of the day every day on and off, I swear it happens at rest, when I’m sleeping, when I’m at work (I’m a nurse so I see people after heart attacks all the time which makes my anxiety way worse), I get the arm tingliness and pains all day too. I have been dealing with cardiophobia for 2 years now. Fear of having seizure (headache/ head/ neck tension. But I only get derealized, feeling like Iv been catapulted into a reality that is only somewhat familiar (heavy brain fog) during my fear of seizure episodes

@@MrJypsye hey 👋🏽 its me Devon, the one that made the comment. So fastforward a year and a half, i still experience some of the things i wrote down, such as chest pains and panic attacks every now and then. not as often as i used to, the depersonalization symptom, the last time i had that was probably a month after i made that comment. but yes the neck tesions / headaches and overthinking of me having a seizure is still here ahaha even after a year of experiencing these things and knowing nothing will happen to me, for some reason i cant seem to let go of the fact that I AM OKAY. for heavens sake i have seen 3 doctors already and they all said Im perfectly fine yet i still wont accept the fact that Im okay. its like my brain has nailed "maybe they missed something" somewhere in my brain because i cant seem to let it go. but i find comfort in staying close to my loved ones and always interacting. dont go thru it yourself, it will make it even worse. hope all of you that replied my comment get better soon ♥️ praying and wishing for better days ahead of us 🙏🏽

I'm terrified of being to far away from a hospital, and being alone because what if I fall over and lay there suffering with no one to get help, or what if I'm in the shower and no one hears me collapse. I don't know what to do I can't sleep good anymore eating even raises my heart rate, I was born with a heart murmur and they say I'm fine but I do not feel fine. I have to ask my daughter if she will come sit with me when I'm freaking out cuz if someone is near me it makes me feel better knowing that they could call 911 if something happened to me.

Hi how are you just checking ur ok :)? Im suffering heart healt anxiety and have been having palpitations for the past three yeats recently ive started having panick attacks and having slow heart rates at 54 bpm at rest sometimes 85 bpm at rest i even had a heart rate of 58 bpm whilst excersizing which is scary and makes no sense cause my heart shouldn't be slow when moving. I notice a tight throat sensation and i have that at the same when i have a slower heart rate so i checked my blood pressure when ever i felt the tight sensation and it said my blood pressure was risen when ever i had atighter feeling in the throat area. So that's made me think my blood pressure is risen cause I'm anxious so i need to work on lowering my blood pressure but the issue with that is my blood pressure is naturally low anyway around 105/65

Currently not sleeping because I’m afraid of sudden cardiac death in my sleep. I’m in a treatment facility and they work with exposures and one of mine is to sleep without checking so much for reassurance but my anxiety keeps saying “checking or not checking won’t improve your anxiety if you die” and I’m loosing so much sleep and running out of things to try.

I’ve been dealing with this for a week now and it’s awful, I’ve recently had my appendix looked at and all my results came back normal. it’s really horrible, especially when you lose trust in the results. try and remember that it is so unlikely those results are wrong - the machinery and staff are incredibly reliable the majority of the time.
