The Spectacular Perseid Meteor Shower - Joshua Tree

- The Perseid meteor shower is one of the most spectacular showers of the year. This year, instead of shooting it myself, I decided to host a workshop to introduce other artists to the wonderful world of capturing nature through timelapse.
This film was made by our crew of timelapse newbies and myself over 4 days. You'll see dozens of meteors zip across the sky against a backdrop of the Milky Way. You'll also see scenes with smoke from the nearby Banning wildfire that occurred during our first day at the workshop.
About the workshop:
Taught by timelapse filmmaker Henry Jun Wah Lee, participants learned how to shoot everything from static to multi-axis, day to night, and astro timelapses. The 4 day workshop also covered how to process RAW photos into Ultra HD resolution 4K videos.
Thanks to Kessler Crane for supplying the motion control devices for our participants. Shot with Kessler Pocket Dolly, Cineslider, Shuttle Pod Mini, Shuttle Pod, Philip Bloom Pocket Dolly, Revolution v2 Head, 3 axis Cinedrive, and Oracle controllers.

I just came back from the Joshua Tree National Park and had a stargazing experience which was AMAZING! Although it was not like 4 K HD video, I was clearly able to see milky way and uncountable stars. I have never seen so many stars in my life. Plus, I saw one shooting star and my daughter saw 4 of them in 20 minutes. There was no Moon in the sky when we were stargazing and I heard that you could see stars better without the Moon. It took about a couple of hours to get there from where I live and did not have to pay entrance fee (It is free admission after the office is closed), so it was fun and economical at the same time.

Joshua Tree National Monument is where I left a big piece of my heart, way back when I was serving in the military, on a base that was only a mile or so from this enchanting & spiritual place. When I had difficulties of any type, I would flee to the shelter of these rock formations...I would camp, I would pray & meditate, & I would be healed--& I would be able to carry on, in spite of every drama/crisis/sorrow that came around.
This would've been stunning w/O these awe-inspiring meteors!!!
It's healing me now...even though decades have passed since I laid back on a blanket there, & gazed up in silent wonder at the 9,000,000,000( + or - a couple)stars...

Crazy to realize how many things come so close to impacting us after all these billions of years… it’s a special moment each of these comets is experiencing as well, because it won’t be seen from intelligent life observing it’s awesomeness for who knows how many thousands , millions of years

Very nice vid. Full disclosure: JTNP is directly beneath the primary approach & departure route to the Palm Springs, San Diego, LAX, Ontario, Orange County and Burbank airports. My house is adjacent to the park, relatively close to a terrestrial nav beacon.

From March through September. If you don't want to stay up late, Jun, July and August are great times.
Is there a tutorial on the type of camera/settings you used + editing software to make this video happen? I would like to learn more about this. Open to pay if it's in a reasonable price range as well. Thank you!
I hope you know that some of these are actually airplanes. In a time-lapse it's not possible to capture meteors in such detail because they happen so fast. You may capture a blink of one, but not falling across the entire sky. Unless the person got normal footage of the meteors and then double exposed them on top of the time-lapse.

I'm afraid that nearly all of the objects in the video are airplanes flying into or out of Los Angeles or San Diego. A meteor from the Perseid meteor shower would have to originate from the direction of the constellation Perseus by definition, which would be in the northeastern sky. Hence, ANY object moving from west to east (right to left during most of the video) could not be a Perseid meteor. Likewise for any object moving south to north, north to south, etc. Only objects originating in the northeastern sky could be Perseids. However, the night portion of the video appears to begin shortly after sunset; Perseus would not have arisen yet, and if the "radiant" of the meteor shower has not yet risen, no meteors from the meteor shower will yet be visible. (The radiant would have risen around midnight). As the camera turns to the east at about 1:58 you can see the steady stream of airplanes coming from and going towards the eastern United States.
Meteors also generally produce just short, instantaneous streaks of light a few degrees long, so any object crossing the entire field of view of the camera is probably not a meteor - nearly all meteors would be visible on only a single frame of the video. A few meteors are visible in the video; there are two in short succession at about 2:33-2:34. Still, it's a lovely video and I hope I can someday see the night sky from a dark place like Joshua Tree.

@@christiantorres531 Literally anywhere in the park. The area near Jumbo rocks is a nice place to hang out and see the stars. A campsite in the park is a great idea too. Even renting a house in the village of Joshua Tree (outside of the downtown area) will get you some nice views and the comfort of not needing to drive to the park.

1:31mins mark...up in the region of the top left corner...a small light appears and moves for a second then fades out. Is that international space station? Great video.

It wouldn't be good. You want the darkest skies possible for stargazing, the moon reflects light. :)
Ahh but the moon over Joshua Tree can be just as majestic as the sky full of stars. Ive been very lucky to have been able to witness these awe inspiring skys pretty much my whole life. They were even more amazing in the late 70s early 80s when there was less light pollution. My childhood telescope has reclaimed its place up on the roof and once again these skys bring me peace and serenity.
Thats a beautiful video but all the moving "meteors" are actually an airplanes. Isn't it Evosia Studio ;)

I hate to say this but most of those white streaks were just jets flying past. meteors are just short streaks at best, even shorter at the speed the video was taken. you can see most were in the same flight path

Most of the light streaks you see in the sky in this video are AIRCRAFT, not meteors. See how they follow the same flight paths, and sometimes even turning.
Only in the Mojave Desert and Great Basin Desert you’ll see this
Went there today and failed because wasn't planned out right to see the peaking point of shooting stars.
