you just saved my life...or rather my paper which was based on a terrible interpretation of this scene. THANK YOU!

+marina arterburn Glad I could help. There's probably many other layers and interpretations to this scene, but it's so ridiculous, I don't really feel like delving any further. My reading, if not enamored with the flibbertigibbets and gobbledygook, at least addresses the scope of the story. I'm always happy to hear alternative reading though, so feel free to share your original ideas!

Excellent episode! The folklorishness of Walpurgis Night does seem out of place, but it is interesting to read. Looking forward to the conclusion of Part One!

Very helpful, thanks! I never really understood the purpose of this scene, because it seems to be so out of place (it makes sense for a dream, maybe, but it just feels like such a departure from the story) I never knew whether to side with Faust or Mephistopheles about whether or not to pay attention to the wraith. Is it really for Faust's safety or is the devil's agent pulling him away from what he needs to face? I used to side with Mephistopheles, but I think I may have been getting it wrong. Great explanation! Thanks!

4 pathetic lines. He’s not well represented to both of our disappointment.

      Tim Nance thanks again.
Since youre here I shall ask the same thing again if thats not a problem.
What does ariel look like throughout the play(and hes a male right? cuz from what i remember he had no pronouns or very few)?

Well, he doesn't get much description. Presumably, each of the characters in the Walpurgis Night's Dream scene stand up one at a time in masks and say their quatrain. Many performances just skip this scene because it's not interesting or relevant to the rest of the play. So I suppose the director/producer could design masks according to whatever they wanted. As for Ariel's gender--The name Ariel was traditionally male for many years, especially in its language of origin (Hebrew), and only recently has switched to female, especially for English speakers. Ariel in Tempest is fairly androgynous because of his role as a spirit or fairy. In Faust, the character doesn't get enough attention to say anything.

+karen torres Do you mean all of part two? I was planning on doing part two in one episode (ep 15), summarizing and talking about the ending. Would you like me to do it more in detail? If so, I'll try, but I might have to take a break since I have a few other projects that are a bit more urgent (Candide!).
