ECM is an independent record label founded by Karl Egger, Manfred Eicher and Manfred Scheffner in Munich in 1969. (at the start of the video, I paused and looked it up 🙂).
I'm 53, but 30 years ago, at the the beginning of 1993 (just after grunge had peaked IMO), something inspired me (a newspaper or radio review perhaps) to purchase John Scofield's What We Do on CD. While not an ECM release (it's on Blue Note), it was my personal first jazz album and one I know really well. While I 'get' why some people would not like Scofield's sometimes squonky guitar sound, I fell in love with it and have been a fan of his (and guitar jazz) ever since. In 1996, a friend of mine bought me his album Quiet (on Verve) which featured Steve Swallow, drummer Bill Stewart. Quiet is unique in Scofield's discography as he plays only acoustic guitar. Wayne Shorter appears on several tracks as well. I mention all of this because that same friend got me into Bill Frisell, so this ECM list intrigues me. I don't have a lot of ECM records, but I did pick up and enjoy John Scofield's 2022 self-titled ECM release. I was really hoping that this year might see Blue Note release What We Do as an anniversary release as it was never released on vinyl, but here's to hoping it gets a release in the future. I also enjoyed his "Hudson" collaboration with Jack DeJohnette. Cheers!
EDITED: to included John Scofield Quartet - What We Do - Camp Out (my favorite and recommended track): czcams.com/video/vDz3NRqONJI/video.html

Love ECM and always find it interesting to see what people's favourites are cause you always discover something new that you have to check out.
I'm streaming the whole ECM catalog now and I'm up to 1975 now and have found lots of great new albums that I had never heard before.
My top ten list today would be.
    1 - Keith Jarret - Köln Concert
    2 - Keith Jarret - Changeless.
    3 - Chick Corea - Piano Improvisation vol 1.
4 - Chick Corea - Return To Forever.
    5 - Zakir Hussain - Making Music.
    6 - Shankar - Vision.
7 - Charlie Haden - Ballad of the Fallen.
8 - Art Ensemble of Chicago - Full Force.
9 - Andras Schiff - Bach: Das Wohltemperierte Clavier.

I have to be in a certain mood to listen to most ECM albums ( usually half asleep!).
Vijay Iyer: Break Stuff, Great pianist. Leo Smith: Divine Love. Steve Reich: Music For 18 Musicians. NZ's own Mike Knock: Ondas, Jon Hassell: Power Spot. Jan Garbarek: Rites, anything by Tomas Stanko (although a lot is CD only).

Hi Mike, Spanish ECM fan, living currently in London.
I like your love of music, and i follow your recommendations.
    I wouldn't call "As falls Wichita.."a jazz album,however.
80/81 could be,but the work with Lyle has different patterns and influences. Country, percussion, electronics etc, made that album something else.
    My top 10 would be:
    Watercolours-Pat Metheny.
    Passengers-Gary Burton
    Sol do Meiodia-Egberto Gismonti
    Odyssey-Terje Rypdal.
    Faithful-Marcin Wasilewski.
    Nouvelle Vague-JL Goddard OST
    When we leave-Mathias Eick.
    Dream logic-Eivind Aarset.
The astounding eyes of Rita-Anouar Brahem.
All of these albums has that sort of classic-folk jazzy ethereal sounds that define this amazing label. Thanks for your work.

My favourite label, lots of masterpieces on it, your selection is mostly the 'dross' -although not in your mind! Witchita is well rated as is Gnu High. Your picks do demonstrate how diverse the issues on the label were. The idea there is an ECM aesthetic a myth, or simply nonsense!

Mike, I have probably 200 ECM's that I could put in my Top 10. I started with the label in 1978, so I have a long history with them. So, in no particular order, i'm listing the first ones that come to mind. By the way the label started around 1969.. So here goes:
John Abercrombie 'Characters', Ralph Towner 'Blue Sun', David Darling 'Journal October', Terje Rypdal 'After The Rain' (all these are pretty much solo albums), Barre Phillips 'Journal Violin 2" (trio), Barre Phillips '3 Day Moon'(quartet), Jack Dejohnette 'Pictures' (agree that 'Unttled' is also a masterpiece,) Azimuth-1st untitled album (trio with Kenny Wheeler), Gary Peacock 'December Poems' (solo bass ^ duets with saxophone), Terje Rypdal/Miroslav Vitous/Jack Dejohnette-untitled 1978 album, Eberhard Weber 'Fluid Rustle' (just fantastic, totally unique, but pretty laid back). I really want to throw in one of saxophonist John Surmans all-solo albums. They all are great and he's done a bunch of them and it's hard to pick a favorite. OK, so i'm over 10... You also listed some other favorites of mine-agreed the Metheny disc is also my favorite of his I think!

The Luminescence Series, which includes the Kenny Wheeler record, has been great so far. Besides Wheeler's Gnu High, I bought Gary Burton's The New Quartet and Don Cherry/Dewey Redmon's Old and New Dreams; great stuff. I am hoping ECM gives Chick Corea's Return to Forever the Luminescence treatment.
For acoustic guitar, you can't go wrong with Ralph Towner, founding member of the group Oregon.

    Boa tarde,
É natural que para quem começou a ouvir ECM's a partir de 1981, faça uma lista dos 10 melhores como a que apresentou.
Apenas concordo num deles: After the rain.
Em 1° lugar deveria estar "The Koln concert" de Keith Jarrett; 2° lugar "Cellorganics" de Heinz Reber & Thomas Demenga; 3° "Return to Forever" de Chick Corea ECM 1022; 4° "Cloud Dance" de Collin Walcott; 5° "Ruta and Daitya" de Keith Jarrett; 6° "Codona 3" de Collin Walcott; 7° "After the Rain"; 8° "American Garage" de Pat Metheny; 9° "Slide Show" de Ralph Towner & Gary Burton; 10° "Trance" de Steve Kuhn.
    Cumprimentos,
    Manuel Bicker Machado
