    Just as small as many point and shoot cameras, the Pentax Q-S1 is a changeable lens mirrorless camera with quite a few features. Image quality is very good from a 12.4 megapixel, 1/1.7" backlit CMOS sensor.

    I have had this camera for a few years with the standard zoom, prime & tele purchased in Okinawa. Excellent quality, versatility and size for a person like me, that travels a lot. A lot of features and great sharp pictures.

    Always get my gear from B&H. Been a customer for some years. I have the QS-1 which I love, with the #1 Prime #2 Standard Zoom and #6 Tele. This camera, I predict, will become a classic and I will keep it forever. Mine is champagne. Love the quick dial to set up my favorite modes. Thank you for your videos B&H!

  • @GreenMorningDragonProductions

    5:42 I completely agree that the 02 lens is a better walkaround lens than the 06. You're the only expert I've heard say it, though. The shallow depth of field ability is decent and at the wide end, it's second only to the 08, which is astronomically priced, in comparison. as you say, zooming in and out with the 02 is way smoother than the 06, too. I think it's easily the most underrated lens in the system. It's my favourite Q-system lens by some distance.

    Have a used Q10. Ricoh/Pentax can’t make up their corporate mindset. Kind of vanished by 2/2018.
    Love my Q10 with the Shield Lens. Very sturdily built body!

    The importance of lenses is ignored by nearly all amateur photographers. With a fixed zoom lens there are many restrictions in sharpness, depth of field, barrel distortion or chromatic aberration. In general the photographer's hands are tied with a compact camera.
    The Pentax Q series could be cheaper and the very small image sensor is a big issue. That unavoidably leads to Image noice and difficult Bokeh.
    Also the range of Lenses for the q series is very basic until now and that is something bad.
    On the other hand the Pentax Q menu gives everything that a proper dSLR camera has and that is important and unique for a very small camera.
    I would say that the Pentax Q series is the king of compact sized cameras. Certainly a comfortable choice of everyday photography instead of using iPhone. In case I had Pentax K mount lenses I would certainly prefer a Pentax Q series camera.

    The camera with lens attached does not fit my pants pocket, but it does fit nicely in a small, stylish fanny pack, letting me carry the camera without advertising that I have a camera with me. I've only had it for a week or so, but I do like it and find it works well for table top (miniature) photography. It's going to be my travel camera and bicycle companion.

    Good review.
    Far from comprehensive.
    How is the manual focus ring (action)?
    Manual focus samples in video would be nice.
    More low (and lowest possible) light video samples would be sweet.
    Framerates in video?
    Thanks, though.

    • @BandH
      @BandH  Před 4 lety

      Unfortunately, the QS-1 has been discontinued by Pentax therefore we’re unable to test or show the manual focus functions for video. In terms of the available frame rates for video, they are Full HD at 24/25/30 FPS, 720P at 24/25/30 FPS and VGA at 24/25/30 FPS. A good alternative to it would be the Sony Alpha a6400 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 18-135mm Lens, B&H #
      SOA640018135 which has higher frame rates and 4K video.

    RED overexposed/oversaturated is ADOBE's problem. As soon you make or create proper DNG profile for the camera the problem is gone. Same if images are loaded in CaptureOne instead of Lightroom which does have better Pentax profiles.
    DNG itself does NOT provide compatibility. DNG just stores original camera raw (TIFF) image and if software does not know how to decode it, it won't regardless if it is in DNG wrapper or not. Converting uncompatible raw file into DNG, won't make it compatible unless it is recoded into DNG lossy variant (there ACR decopdes and stores image as JPEG inside DNG). Adobe uses DCRAW engine under the hood, that is why it can open everything, but further processing often lack proper profiles.

    So ME lenses will not fit this camera?

    • @BandH
      @BandH  Před 5 lety +1

      Unfortunately, I am not familiar with the term "ME lenses," nor do I know the lens mount used on the above lenses. We would need to know either the full brand/model name of the lens you own, or the lens mount used on the rear of the lens to confirm if the lens you own will be compatible for use on the Pentax Q-S1 Mirrorless Digital Camera, or if there is a lens adapter designed to connect your lens to the Pentax Q-mount used on the Pentax Q-S1 Mirrorless Digital Camera. If you can e-mail the brand/model of your lens (or the lens mount used on the lens you own) to askbh {at} bhphoto {dot} com, we may then assist you with your inquiry.

    • @2charlesbryant
      @2charlesbryant Před 5 lety

      @@BandH Sorry for the incomplete information. The lens is a pentax from a Pentax ME camera body. Not sure of the mount type and that is the problem.

    • @manzelllyles2235
      @manzelllyles2235 Před 5 lety

      @@2charlesbryant The Pentax ME 35mm film camera used the Pentax K-mount lens mount. The Pentax Adapter Q for K-mount Lenses, B&H # PEAQKM, would be the correct lens adapter to connect Pentax K-mount lenses onto the smaller Pentax Q-mount lens lens mount. Do note that due to the smaller sensor size used on the Pentax Q-S1 Mirrorless Digital Camera, the focal length of your lens will have a multiplication factor of 5.5x. As an example, if you have a 50mm lens, it will have the full-frame equivalent focal length of a 275mm lens. A wider 28mm lens would be the equivalent of a 154mm lens. As such, note that this would be a better option if you will be using the camera to capture items at a distance, as all lenses will act as telephoto lenses when mounted to this adapter for use on the Pentax Q-S1 Mirrorless Digital Camera (which, as of the date/time of this reply, the camera has been discontinued and is no longer available for purchase as a new camera).

    When Canon and Sony have P&S with 1 inch sensors these days, buying a changeable lens camera with 1/1.7 sensor seems odd.

    • @we3avery
      @we3avery Před 9 lety +1

      I think we might have missed the point here
      It is not a P&S camera but rather a mirror-less interchangeable lens camera
      With, I hasten to add, a very good review
      Good build with excellent customisation
      Raw files
      Well reviewed interchangeable lenses
      So why criticise the smaller sensor?
      That's the way we will probably go
      Make this series waterproof and I'll be there ASAP

    • @Ranblv
      @Ranblv Před 9 lety +2

      You missed my point entirely. This is a small sensor, even smaller than good P&S. I stated that it was changeable lens camera that is why it is odd. If you want a changeable lens camera in a small price the sony a5000/a5100 are way better with a 1.5 crop factor instead of a 4.6 crop factor.
      Do yourself a favor, go into B&H and let the reps there talk you out of a bad buy before you waste your money.

    • @bohnstube
      @bohnstube Před 9 lety

      Yep, several years ago now this interchangeable lens item at this price may have been some serious competition for similarly sized NON-interchangeable lens camera series of the day, like the S-series from Canon or the LX-series from Panasonic, but the limitations that this camera has today, such as using it only when there's a lot of light available, and the "high level of image noise" that happens when you shoot at even as low an ISO of 200 in sunshine, will most likely be a deal-breaker for most photographers, w/ the exception being those who will list camera pocketability and size as the top priority reason for wanting it.

    • @JohnMFlores
      @JohnMFlores Před 9 lety +1

      The point is the changeable lens. I shoot POV stills and video with the 03 Fisheye. Can't get that with a P&S. You can also get a zoom that reaches to nearly 300mm. Can't get that with a small P&S with 1" sensor. Others are taking their K-mount zooms/telephotos and getting some pretty impressive moon shots.

    • @bohnstube
      @bohnstube Před 9 lety

      John M Flores If you've found a specific use for this camera being your best tool of choice to do the particular job that you need to get done, go for it and more power to you. :-D
      *Nobody here stated that under any and all circumstances this camera would do a lousy job*, but only that *in most changing general purpose photography conditions*, that there might be other cameras out in the marketplace today that might excel in a more wide range of conditions *that the average, and general purpose photographer* might face on a more consistent basis.
