I worked at the Opryland Hotel when I lived in Nashville. The Gatlin Brothers were regulars, especially during Christmas and would come to our office and visit. Our manager was good friends with them. I had no idea who they were, but learned soon what legends they were.
I love how the Oak Ridge Boys came in and started doing harmony, that made the song just very surprising, loved it. 🥰

OK, I was 11 when I heard this song the first time... At my uncle Bill's house in the hills of southern Indiana... wooden floors, chicken coops, steers in the pasture, and about 20 adults getting completely "righteous" for hours until the sun came up... Things at 11, I would go on later to understand... Still the best A-Capella voices I have ever heard...

What a Song! I remember hearing that song played and sung by the Gatlin Brothers back when I was about 15 or so. Its just as pretty today as it was then. Having the original band and singers ices the cake so well!! Well Done!!!

I was there driver when they came to my city.Rudy is a great guy. Larry at first was a bit of himself but when he realized I was not an adoring fan he was a great guy. Steve travelled with the band and so really not interacted with him but after that I was fans of the Gatlins.
To this day. when I hear this I stop what I am doing and listen. Loved seeing the Gatlins with the Oaks together. Bravo.

Season Five episode 2 "True Detectives". Very different rendition. I knew I knew it but I had to google it to remember it. I don't know when this was televised but I must say they all held up well. Those were good days when these guys first came around

I remember dad had this record in the 70s plus he sometimes sang it as he was always involved in a band. Then in 2018 I went to The Ryman Auditorium and watched the Gatlin Brothers play it when Larry was the host of the show. He had a little faster tempo and I really liked that version of it.

So this was my first official hand me down from my Mother. She had one of their records but not the regular ones. The 35’s I believe they were called. An I had this little record player an I loved this song! I couldn’t been more then 10ish. An I was born in 74. I’ve always loved this song because was my first like favorite song.

45 rpm - "Single" (-1 song each side -).
I miss the old records, myself, except when it comes to carrying them around 😉

I recently bought a 1988 Chevy truck with a 454 gas hog and It has a factory cassette player. I went to a flea market and bought the Gatlin bros, Statler Bros, Kenny Rogers and Restless Heart on cassette. Tonight we celebrated my good friends 40th bday by driving around at 8 mpg listening to the cassettes and enjoying every minute of it to a 6 pack of Schlitz… :) it’s a tru story!!!!!

Fun fact: This song was written while Larry Gatlin was stuck in a traffic jam in Los Angeles; the song goes on to warn the listener that all the gold in the state "is in a bank in the middle of Beverly Hills in somebody else's name" and that attempting to make it big in California carries a risk of failure that could personally devastate one's resolve. Another fun fact: Larry Gatlin & the Gatlin Brothers Band sang this song at the nationally televised 50th Presidential Inaugural Gala, the day before the second inauguration of Ronald Reagan. 🤩
