  • Dr. Don Rakow, retired Cornell University faculty and leader of the Nature Rx @Cornell and co-director of the nationwide Campus Nature Rx Network, has done extensive research on the physiological and psychological benefits of time spent in nature. Much of the early research in this field focused on “green spaces” like parks and forests. Recently, attention has been paid to “blue spaces” such as coastlines, lakes, and rivers. In this talk, Dr. Rakow shared these research findings and their implications for modern society. This talk was part of a collaborative community event to kick off the 2024 Ashokan Watershed Conference, a series of nature-based experiences surrounding the theme Conservation Through Connection. The Ashokan Watershed Conference is organized by the Ashokan Watershed Stream Management Program (AWSMP) working with communities to maintain stream health in the Ashokan Reservoir watershed in the Catskills region of upstate New York.
