Suzuki Intruder 1400 - How to prime the carb for easier starting!

  • This is a very easy process and should be done anytime you let your bike sit for an extended period of time. If you ride regularly, there won't be much need to prime the carb. This bike has been sitting for a very long time. I was actually surprised the battery was still juiced up.

Beautiful bike! Great video, I would love a video on the air/fuel mixture adjustment👍. I very recently just bought a 96 Intruder 1400, I saw one here in Australia about 20yrs ago and loved the look of them and now I got one in mint condition. Thanks again for the video, I subscribed👍

Thank you! I first saw the Intruders back in 1987 when my father bought a VS700 brand new. I had never seen a bike so nice in my life at that time and I fell in love with them. It took me another 25 years to get one of my own and I’ve owned one (or two) ever since. They’re not the most comfortable or fastest bikes but very few bikes look quite as good, even now. I appreciate the subscription!

I've had my '97 for about 10 years now, and I never knew about that priming trick! Thanks for the info. I can really use it. Just finished up the 2nd teardown & rebuild in the years that I've road it. This time was to paint it. And wouldn't ya know, it's cranky about the whole ordeal. Does not like to be mussed with below 'er saddle usually. And this time I may have rushed things a bit getting it all packed in.
Started fairly quickly on the 1st or 2nd try after getting it back together mostly. A little slow on the idling at first(was expecting worse) but noticed as soon as I just touched the throttle it died instantly. 2nd startup required full choke and a bit more cranking than previous, but it fired and was back to that same putting like it does once the temp outside drops below 50, ittl be cranky till it warms a bit before IO can bring any throttle up to get it warm. So on this 2nd fire up I decided to let it idle up to warm on its own since it had been through a lot getting back, but on this time, it gradually started dropping in revs rather than picking up as it was warming up. and that, until it died altegether. The 3rd and final time I was able to get it to fire was only like the last few seconds of poor-to-dead idleing of the last time. Only cranks now, even with a shot or 2 of starter fluid it barely manages to run that off the nothing.
So fuel related, yes? Prolly clogged the jets by cleaning the engine in place.(didn't take it out from the frame this time) Pretty sure i could have washed grime from above down into the carbs while I was busy thinkin' ahead when I shoulda been more focused on the corners I was cuttin'.
Think I'm not getting fuel like I've pinched or kinked a fuel line(Thats what Im hoping of course) and might be as simple as puttin the peepers on the problem, but if lookin' alone won't find it, I sure see this primer pointer coming in more than handy for the next troublelooking stages after that. I'm sure it will be used a bunch until I can ferret out the weasel that's working a bad wrenching into meh Zen between the Art of Motorcycle Maintenancing...(If ya've read Pirsig, you can dig what I mean).
Any more of them Sagey advice tips that you might have under yer hat would sure go easy with me trying to get my knees back in the breeze before the long freeze here in the Hoosier parts!
I thank you again though for this gem already, and all the same. Great content composition, by the by! Short but sweet and to the meat! Best way to How-to on the CZcams in my humble...
    Ride well!

Make sure you opened up the fuel sub petcock under the tank. Uses a flathead screwdriver. I’ve forgotten that so many times!

I was pleasantly pleased when it started up! I do not keep a battery tender on it and I’ve not touched it in a long time. I said 2 months in the video but it’s more like 3. An oil change is long over due.

You mentioned rocking the bike if the neutral light isn't on. What does the rocking do? I parked my 1400 in perfect working order for two weeks and I haven't had a neutral light since then and I'm so puzzled to the point of insanity as to why. Any input would be so appreciated.

The gears don’t always fall into place I’ve found. So rocking it back and forth just helps a little. Did you get yours figured out?

Yes it’ll stop on its own assuming the float inside the bowl is functioning properly. You might need to tear the carbs down and clean them depending on bad the fuel is in it. Also if you can, run pure gas whenever possible. A few ounces of Seafoam each tank will help clean out varnish and gum.
