  • Ricardo Semler pleads for the inside of the box thinking. From his impressive estate, he shows the viewer a new spectacular view. We are smarter than ever, but have we become wiser? The economy is totally disregarded, capitalism has nowhere led to equivalence; the 6 largest companies in the world are worth more than the 60 poorest countries together. Why isn't it possible to create a better world? It is the braincracker of visionary Ricardo Semler. In VPRO backlight, he outlines the confrontational conditions for an era of Wisdom.
    Previously, we saw in 'The Capital of Happiness' how the beloved Brazilian top entrepreneur Ricardo Semler focused on happiness and love in management and business. He built a world empire with the simple question, how are my employees really happy? Employees are nowadays well-informed and capable of recognizing and solving problems themselves or not in a group that is connected through networks and iPhone.
    Nevertheless, we remain in fear of chaos in business and government and continue to appoint managers and intermediaries to alleviate the fears. In VPRO Backlight, non-conformist Ricardo Semler bends on these issues. How can we turn classical management into dogmas and pyramids? Semler makes a plea for the inside of the box thinking and living. From the place where he comes to his ideas, his own impressive estate on a mountain near Sao Paulo, he shows the viewer a new spectacular spectacle.
    Backlight dwells further into Ricardo Semler's world, a world in which wisdom, intuition and inside the box think more than ever before should take a central position.

    "We're getting smarter but we're not getting wiser." I agree with this sentiment very much. Great interview, indeed.

    Another great thinker from the Brazilian Jewish community, along with Eduardo Saverin ( Facebook founder) and Edmund Safra .

    I completely agree with him about how tribalism in society is getting worse and making things difficult for humanity. The underlying fear of scarcity, as our population explodes, is further perpetuating people to make sure they get theirs. Out of the approximately 193 countries in the world, the 6 largest companies in the world are worth more than the 60 poorest countries together. I think I understand the message he is trying to convey, BUT he speaks from a place of security. He has a roof, he has food, he has access to the best health care. Those people in the 60 poorest countries don't care about Google, algorithms or being boxed. They care about food, shelter and survival. While his thoughts and ideas are not lost on me, he's in a place of privilege very few in the world will ever see. (These are just some of my thoughts. I'm in no way trying to say I'm right and other ideas are wrong. I'm not looking to argue, rather discuss, if you'd like.)

      I understand what your arguments are, I think, Sandi. At the same time, there's always a small percentage of people on our planet showing up with wisdom. Ricardo has had a major accident in his life where all the bones in his head were broken and the police wanted to leave him under his car wreck, thinking he was dead. I personally believe that this accident has sparked a flame in Ricardo that burns bright to this day, a knowingness about what makes life worth living. To me, it's people like him that are the trailblazers on a path that we, in our own time, may choose to step on. I know that many of us living now are doing just that.🗽

    I swear I see the world exactly like he does and I liked his "box" philosophy. Also his living room is so beautiful it makes me wanna cry . Also his wine collection made me wanna cry too lol . I know I'm not one of the smart ones but I'm trying really hard to at least be one of the wise ones .

    I loved listening to ricardo on the tim Ferris podcast and didn't forget about that moment. I had to go back to the podcasts archives to remember the guests name since I typically don't remember all of the guests names on the dozens of podcast I subscribe to. But given my memory of how much I enjoyed listening to his thoughts I had to look him up and see what other interviews he had given and so was delighted to find this conversation.

    Freedom of thinking inside the box is doing something where you're not familiar with and also not know what the outcome will be. For example, I traveled to England, left everything behind without a plan to return, stopped working for an income and lived.... happily, without money, for 5 months. Food and shelter were offered by communities. I worked for them as a volunteer. Only my benefit for health insurance served me as a source of money, to pay the bus and train when I traveled after each month to the next address. It was a liberating experience and being in nature, in remote areas of Britain, returning to life outdoors 24 hours a day, camping, was at that time a grounding I needed much, with a welcome simplicity to it. Creativity blooming!
    Due to a long rainy period in the summer of 2012, with our tents and building material turning very damp (I also worked building strawbale homes) I had to return to my home in Holland, where my lodger took care of it and paid the rent. I recommend such an adventure, it's refreshing and it nudges you to make home within yourself, be at ease with your presence!

    Jack Ma also voiced the same thing about how AI can have knowledge but not wisdom. Another word for wisdom is enlightenment or spiritual awakening.

      To me, wisdom is also making connections between different subjects and experiences that are outside linear logic, resulting in a sum like 1+1=3 where the end result is larger than the sum of the ingredients that lead to it. It's also found by focussing on quality instead of on quantity. And since quality isn't measurable in absolute statements, but rather felt and perceived from the heart, the human brain, working on its own, isn't involved in finding it. Hence the diversity in life.

    Quick question “Mr. wise”: why do you need such freaking huuuuge house?? Is that something wise? Hm....easier said than done, no?

      Hello rskbug,
      Would you like to tell us why?

    • @devonseamoor
      @devonseamoor Před 4 lety

      I imagine you feel that the choice to step out of the box is always present? So that we're never forced into a box, but allow it to happen collectively? It's possible that Ricardo mentions his box theory, mainly related to his view that businesses create a box around them and keep those people in it that are inbred, more of the same and thus never thinking outside that box. For that's dangerous due to asking critical questions. The status quo within a fixed system, where people are involved, always is in defense mode
