WHAT IS HIGH GRADE STONE?
Anything you can run a 1/2" or more flake with a pressure flaker.
HEAT TREATING:
Heat treat a few FLAKES of everything you got except HIGH GRADE Raw Stone, Obsidian, Dacite, Basalt, Hornstone, Sonora, Fort Payne, or Rhyolite. Start with flakes and spalls less than 1" thick for 200°F for 24 hours to dry it out. Then raise the temp to 275°F and hold for 4 hours. Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back I at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 4 hours.
Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back in at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 1/2 hour, the raise to 375 for 4 hours.
Repeat with temp going up 50°F until you reach 600°F or nice chippable stone. Whichever comes first. If no good result, or things blow up, let us know.

1800 videos!!!!! Haven't seen one yet that I didn't learn from and enjoy
Thanks for sharing!
You're very welcome
Love me some tool talk! I actually 3D printed most of my tools and would be happy to send you a set of a few to try out if you'd be interested in putting them through some hardcore testing! Showed some of em off on a recent video I made and gave you a shout-out as well 😁 love this deeper dive you did though. Always interesting to see what different people come up with and use for their tools.
3D printed tools? I'm curious, oh yes.
@@smolzillamakes me three! I'll check out the video. I have a friend who might be able to print me some...
Jack, I really enjoy every video brother. You’ve inspired me to keep at it and keep learning.
Glad to hear it.
@@KnapperJackCrafty thank you sir.
Thanks for the video.
You bet
Good stuff man!
Hey man! Thanks for sharing.
Really appreciate. As a member of association of anonymous knapoholics. :)
😂
Just FYI, if you're a lap or leg knapper you will want a couple of deer, cow, hog, buffalo, etc leg pads. Or you can use a folded old towel or jeans, etc. I have hog leather but I rarely use them. I'm more of a free hand knapper like Jack, and I mostly wear gloves for that.
I always put a glove on...after ive cut myself lol😂
oh so pumped for this!
How was it? Did I miss anything important?
@@KnapperJackCrafty Well, we didn't get the relative humidity of your workshop, which of course would help us understand the fluid dynamics of the tools moving through the air, but it's ok, I know you'll cover it again.
@@KnapperJackCrafty lolol jkjk. It was great man. I was cracking up when you were just tossing shit into a pile. No tool left behind! Bravo!
@@bdonlazy Good. I'm glad you liked it.
As someone who has relied on ground wires for pressure flakers, I wonder if the “1/4” copper is soft” stems from that.
I used the drill/vice method, which straightens and hardens the copper wire into a rod, on my scrap finds, worked exceptionally well for me, especially on a budget.
If I want something a little harder than copper, I just use nails.
Great video on modern tools and thanks again on info regarding the use of reindeer antler for tool. Ive got a lot of it from a buddy at the zoo. Thanks again, Ralph Snyder: michigan.
You're very welcome
Cool vid.👍👍
Thanks
A stiff wire brush or wheel for drill or dremel will clean out debris in the pits of the boppers

Jack .. Hemlock ... That's what they use for Mine Timbering , because it's as strong as Oak and Creeks and moans before it snapped . Unlike Oak that just Shattered and collapsed with the miners inside
Interesting
Jack, what do call a deer with no eyes??....No eye deer!!

hey as a fellow knapper of 20 yrs i can speak to boppers vs billets i have both and the weight distribution absolutely matters at least in my experience the bopper allows for a better whipping action vs the rod which i find to be too unwieldy for that. i will say the billets will last about 10000% longer but i still prefer a bopper except in the odd circumstance where i need a lots of power in a small diameter or am working a very tough stone. just my two cents.
Very good info. 💯
@@KnapperJackCrafty I forgot to mention the solid copper billets are harder than the lead and so the crush platforms easier that the capped boppers because the lead lets the energy go more slowly.

How about a home remedy for “drawing out” insy weensy flakes deep into your fingers? I’ve tried salt water, baking soda, sugar poultices, etc, etc … digging invisible (even under high magnification) is brutal and iffy at best, ha. I’ll dig deep, let it heal over, dig again, repeat, repeat. Been after one for two years, ha.
Drawing out has never worked for me. I just take Motrin and dig the sucker out.
Epsom Salts are what medical professionals would recomnend but last time this happend i had to just grit my teeth and dig it out with a somewhat sharp but used utility blade.
I don’t touch obsidian for that very reason. If you don’t get them, they’ll make a “wart”, and haunt you for a while.
Thanks, yes, kinda at the “wart” stage with this one. Shaved it off with a fresh utility blade last evening, maybe got a few pieces out, ha.

hello there im newer to your channel i had a question for you on tools. have you ever experimented with brass, bronze or copper solid rod and different diameters of rod?
Yes. Bronze works well. Brass is not as good and can be a challenge. I will work with more brass in the future. I use various diameter copper rods in all my recent videos
Good to know!!! Thank you
Hell if I know lol
😂
Nope not completely all your tools..look inside the craft parts storage bin, gray color shell, clear plastic drawers, they are filled with stuff
Yeah, I'm going to "unbox" that in an upcoming video
@@KnapperJackCrafty I had to lie to the post office and say there wasn't explosive material inside, seriously😁
