    Two details (they also mention it in the Sabaton History in passing). 1. Gustavus Adolphus revolutionized combined arms on the battlefield in several ways and is still studied at military academies today 2. Löwe aus Mitternacht means Lion of Midnight and refers to a prophecy that has its roots in the bible with a quote that "The lion of midnight shall claim the eagle's sceptre" and midnight was often related to North and the North Star. Gustavus made good use of this prophecy and had propaganda spread about him being the Lion from the North (and he was well on his way to live up to that prophecy until his untimely demise).

      @@rayceofhistory I actually chose to research it a bit to make sure I was accurate with what i said and i found a free military article published by the american DoD in 2000 called Gustavus Adolphus: Father of Combined Arms Warfare . It's a short read but gives a great overview on just how many ways he innovated warfare, it's actually crazy how he laid the groundwork for pretty much the standard modern combat doctrines we still follow today! Well worth the 26 pages read

       @RayceOfHistory @@vakistania The most amazing and often confusing thing is the opposite tactics used during at different times by the Swedish military. Gustavus Adolphus Introduced a focus on lighter muskets and artillery to move away from the earlier dominant square pike formations. Later the Caroleans used shock infantry tactics of charging the now common musket formations.

    Gustav Adolphs ruling words were: "Med gud och seger rika vapen!", "Whit god and victorius arms!" Nice of Sabaton to work it in to the English version. im quite impressed by that actually.
    Ruling words is like a motto all the Kings have them. The current king Carl XVI Gustav is: "För Sverige i tiden", "for Sweden in this time/era"

    You won't hear many people, at least in the Anglosphere, namecheck Lion from the North as like, the go-to Sabaton song, but I honestly think it's some of their finest. Really it makes sense that the whole Carolus Rex album is considering it hits them right in their homeland, of course Swedes are going to put on a bit more pepper singing about Swedish history. But man, does this album come out swinging hard, it's an opening that both conveys what the whole thing is about, and gives so much pure energy. I listen to this song when I'm down. In fact, that's just what I did. It's fun to see how much more raw a lot of the Swedish lyrics are, Sabaton really has a sense for what fits in each language.

    Great reaction!🤘 Looks like you've fallen into the same trap as I have!😁 Every new Sabaton song one hear, becomes the new favourite... For me it's been quite a lot by now! 😄 And I can't pick just one song nowadays... They're all so good! Like I mentioned earlier, the "Carolus Rex" album is a masterpiece and I dare to call it one of my absolute favourite albums by Sabaton. Right now I have that whole album as my workout playlist... 😉💪

  • @ulvsbane
    @ulvsbane Před 2 lety +9

    "Der Löwe auch Mitternacht" (should be der Löve aus Mitternacht) is German and means The lion of midnight/Midnight Lion, or in this context The lion from the North. It was the name given to Gustavus Adolphus by the German protestants when he arrived at the battlefields of mainland Europe fighting the Catholics.
    Mostly ... since it was a war between major powers there were instances where Catholics fought Catholics and Protestants fought Protestants.

    "Der löwe aus mitternacht kommst" , is German and means "The lion from midnight comes". Or possibly "The lion from the land of the midnight sun is coming" some flavour is lost in the translation.

    • @rayceofhistory

      I had someone on the channel suggest it, I had not heard any of their songs. When it was first suggested I didn’t really know what to expect, in some of my earlier reactions to them I’m kind of shocked about a group using music to teach history, it was just something I’d literally never heard of and it seemed like such a great idea. I haven’t been to a concert but I’m really hoping to at some point. But to be honest, the more I’ve listened to them the more I think I’d rather wait and go to one in a European country. One where they have songs that are specific to that area. Sweden, Belgium, Poland, or any of the others. I feel like it would just be an awesome experience. And I live in north Texas, maybe an hour, hour and a half outside of Amarillo in the Texas panhandle. I’ve got family that lives all over the state though, and I’m hoping to to an Alamo video live when I go to San Antonio this summer to see some family members. And yes, I’ll think about it and give my top five in the next sabaton video later today.

      I´ve been all around the US, I wanna visit all the states and I travel from Stockholm, Sweden every year for Packers games 😀
      You should come for a concert in Stockholm or Gothenburg!
      Have you reacted to, Rise Of Evil, yet? IMO that is Sabatons second best song.

    • @rayceofhistory
      @rayceofhistory  Před 2 lety

      @@ricknesar1627 I don’t think I have, but it is on my list so I will get to it soon. I would love, and I mean love to go to a concert in Stockholm or Gothenburg. The video of en livstid i krig was one of the coolest things I’ve seen from sabaton, and I can’t imagine being there live for something like that.
      I had a thing going before the pandemic started where every football season I would fly to a certain city that had historical things or battlefields that I wanted to see, and I’d go look at sights for a few days and then go to a football game before I left. Washington DC and Boston were the last two I had done before everything started. The packers is one of the games I would love to go to, they are such a unique football team and place. Next trip I’m planning is to go see civil war battlefields, I’m just not sure where exactly I want to go that’s near enough to a football stadium that I could catch a game. And I used to live about 10 minutes from Cadillac ranch. We know the guy who put it together, and that area is where a lot of my family is initially from, although most have moved now and I think I live closest to the area. There is a small Polish town out in the country maybe 30 minutes from there where my grandparents lived their entire lives until they passed away. What did you think about the place? Was it weird to see so much farmland or is that more normal where you’re from?
