A hospital stay put my life into a new chapter and I discovered the joy of skincare. Completely new to it all! So I just dived in full-heartedly and got a little obsessed haha. Ultimately, I don't think we need many steps at all, and as you're using sunscreen, you're already winning. So be kind to yourself and celebrate that at least you're doing that :)

I just have to say one thing and this is coming from a licensed Esti. Face mists are BS for the most part, but the one that is the “heritage store” brand- which has just glycerin and Rosewater- works wonders as a moderate to deep moisturizer as the glycerin locks in moisture and the rose helps to calm skin! Glycerin is an amazing ingredient, and since the spray actually has it, it actually works! That’s the only moisturizer I use currently actually even though it’s technically a “Spray” because my skin is so sensitive and the glycerin doesn’t break me out because is non-comedogenic. It also COMPLETELY hydrates my skin. Way less transepidermal water loss!

Tip: don’t use makeup wipes or rounds for makeup. The whole reason why makeup clogs your pores is because the wipes don’t absorb the makeup, they push into your skin and clog your pores. Meanwhile taking it off using your facial cleanser pushes and washes it off your skin. Personally this has helped my skin a lot, I just use my ceravea foaming cleaner and it works really well! I only really wear mascara and it works but I tested it once with heavy makeup like foundation as an experiment and it made a difference! Second tip do NOT do slugging especially if you have acne especially hormonal acne, it clogs your pores a lot. I tried slugging before it was a trend back in 2019, and it clogged my pores and was a nightmare to take off because of the texture.

I use Witch Hazel! Kind of meant to be a toner, but I generally use it to quick clean after addressing pimples, and also use it after washing and when I need a quick clean up. They make wipes with it. You have to get one that is purely witch hazel and a medium product though. Like, water and whatnots. No parfum or rose oil or hazel with any other thing added in.

I would totally choose toners with good ingredients over a serum with the same ingredients. Personal preference but toners make my skin plump and juicy and hydrated and moisturizer keeps that in. Serums? Not so much. I love serums but I love toner/essence more. (If I had to choose just one. Lol. Thankfully I don’t)

I alternate based on what my skin is needing but in the rotation are:
Mario Badescu spray with aloe, adaptogens, and coconut water (only one they make with actual good ingredients)
Origins mega mushroom relief and resilience
      First Aid Beauty ultra repair
Sephora toners - vitamin c one and the niacinamide and zinc one
      Glow recipe watermelon glow
      Biossance squalane + BHA
      Innisfree ginger honey nourishing ampoule
      COSRX advanced snail 96 essence
I don’t use them all every time, obviously. But I do tend to press in 2 or 3 toners each routine. I also do use serums but, as I said, given the choice, I’d choose my toners over my serums cuz they make me feel more plumpy and I can keep that hydration in with a good cream or oil

I agree with everything you are saying. But I went to a French spa in France and the hostess who is French explained to me that toner is the most important part in a skin care routine because of unclean water and extra residue that may be on your face. The water in France at least is very hard and in many places in the states as well so that is the reason she explained to me for using a toner and another esthetician explained to me the same.

hyram, the reason slugging keeps moisture in is the same reason people use face oils... the oils seal in moisture just like petrolatum. many people just dont like the greasy feeling of petrolatum and/or it breaks them out. i absolutely hate putting vaseline on my face, so i use rosehip oil, which has the same effect for me, and prevents overnight water loss.
