Let this be a lesson to fighters who spar too much. Your brain isn't a muscle and it doesn't have the same recuperating mechanisms that our musculoskeletal system possesses. This great fighter was overused in the wrong way and is the victim of lack of supervision. God bless!

broken blood vessels in his brain and he was squinting hard in training camp every time he took a shot, as told by his sparring partner. He wasn't a good guy, but it's tough to watch that happen to anyone. IDK how they didn't see this in camp.

Gerald McClellan's big mistake was splitting with Many Steward (head coach at the famous Kronk Gym in Detriot, Michigan), who would have pulled him out long before the damage was irreversible in the Benn fight. The guy he had as his head coach in the corner that night (Stan Johnson), had zero experience as a boxing trainer (let alone at world level), and, was just employed by McClellan as a cheerleader to tell him how good he looked and just go for the knockout. Bad move, with, sadly, life-changing consequences. What happened to Michael Watson was a tragic accident; I believe what happened to Gerald McClellan was an accident of birth; being genetically predisposed to suffering brain damage in the boxing ring (so, in my opinion, if it hadn't happened against Nigel Benn it would have happened further down the line; it's just with Benn's ferocious and tremendous punching power it was, unfortunately, accelerated. A good tribute to a talented boxer, who had all the moves in the ring, and who almost lost his life in the toughest game of all. Thanks for uploading

Because i think Benn was on drugs, i've seen documentary about this fight and interviews and the way he was talking about how he needed to win this fight because he had trouble in his life both personally and financially, also the fact that he avoided the drug test after the fight after collapsing due to exhaustion as he said, and when the way he felt uncombfortable talking about this makes me believe that he was actually juiced. He even said that he was peeing blood days after the fight, which is in my opinion due to the fact taht Mclellan was known for landing devastating liver shots, may be drugs can help you take those shots during the fight.

    Hi folks.
Lets take a trip down memory lane.
On the 25th February 1995, Gerald McClellan met a 31 year old Blackman from the U.K called Nigel Benn.
It was to be the most punishing fight of McClellans career.
His opponent Nigel Benn was not a boxer.
He was a notorious bar room brawler who intially took up boxing as a way of managing his anger.
Coupled with his anger issues, Benn had a reputation for being one of the dirtiest fighters.
After much hype, the fight got underway and McClellans came out in his usual explosive style.
After knocking down Benn in the first round, Benn somehow got back up and proceeded to trade blows with McClellan.
Benn was not in the same class as McClellan, but somehow he miraculously stayed toe to toe with McClellan during that fateful night punching McClellan throughout the following rounds.
Benns punching delivery was sloppy and his footwork dodging was shabby.
But his punches miraculously still connected!
In contrast Gerald was fast, super co-ordinated and classy.
Both men traded good punches complete with their contrasting styles.
Benn employed his trademark dirty tactics by rabbit punching McClellan in the back of the head in every round as the tv footage clearly shows.
Sometime during the round 9, McClellan sustained a serious brain injury from Benns punches and he started blinking heavily as he was in pain.
His gum shield started hanging out and he started breathing erratic as if he was struggling to get enough oxygen.
He movements slowed and he started backing off but he kept his guard up at all times.
The round ended but McClellan was visibly hurt.
During that round McClellans punches had suddenly become sloppy and apart from the exception of the odd punch, they were just not connecting.
A bloodclot had formed in McClellans brain from the gruelling punches he had received.
Both men were very tired but Benn, despite his sloppy style, was now getting the upperhand as McClellan was clearly injured.
During round 9 Benn can be seen missing a punch but the sheer force of his punch made him fall forward and he headbutted McClellan who tried get out if the way - but McClellan was unsuccessful.
Boxing experts have analysed the video footage and have stated that this accidental headbutt made things worse for McClellan added to the fact that his condition was already getting worse due to the brain injury he sustained sometime during round 9.
McClellans punches clearly confirmed in the ringside video footage had become sloppy and his movements had become slow.
His gum shield was hanging out and he can be seen blinking as if he was in pain.
His breathing was erratic as if he was struggling for oxygen.
    He nevertheless continued.
In round 10 Benn came out and after the two men were trying to punch eachother Benn caught Gerald with two punches.
The first punch made McClellan go down on one knee but he got back up.
The second punch 20 seconds later made McClellan go down on one knee again and the referee stepped in because McClellan made no effort to get back up.
McClellan remained down on one knee and the referee began counting down.
To everyones shock, McClellan allowed himself to be counted out.
The fight was over and McClellan staggered back to his corner and sat down on his stool.
IT WAS A FATEFUL NIGHT AS WITHIN 2 MINUTES MCCLELLAN FELL INTO A COMA WHILST STILL IN THE RING FROM A TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY.
HE HAD ACTUALLY FALLEN OFF HIS STOOL.
So there you have it folks.
Gerald was the boxer - Benn was the brawler.
But Benn possessed the volcano heart of a lion - and somehow he miraculously managed to pull of one of the biggest upsets in boxing history!

A nice analysis EXCEPT that McClellan had a career history of absorbing excessive punishment. His two previous fights with extreme puncher Julian Jackson exposed him to a lot of power head shots before he won both. Given his history and fighting style, McClellan may well have had a damaged brain that was already a ticking time bomb that could have exploded from a head shot from a sparring partner or a hard sneeze. Pro boxing is an ultrahazardous activity that ruins a lot of athletes both physically and mentally, both actively and over years of aging after retirement. As a decent and educated man, I wish I could give up my continuing interest in it. Reasonable minds cannot differ that -- like American football -- it's too injurious to innocent athletes in its present form and that the day is coming that we'll have too much scientific and medical evidence before us to allow it to continue.

Ok i just read your comment so allow me to ssk you a question.
Would you support mandatory brain scans for all pro boxers before any fight deal is signed with promoters?

@@Whitegorillaboy You could just have good defense, stay hydrated, eat clean for brain, get enough sleep, and get brain scanned every 3 months if you're still worried

Why did you ruin it with the music? Would have been interesting to hear what was being said and to hear the shots on the mitts.

"McClellan's trainer and family admitted that McClellan on one occasion had used tape to bind the jaws of a Labrador shut before allowing his pet pit bull "Deuce" to kill it"
nice to see that karma is still working
