Alternately, there's off-road racing. Enduro, harescramble, etc. I didn't start racing until my 20s but I've only touched an MX track three times. But yes, there is a difference between "trail riding" and "Enduro"
#6… To elaborate, IMO, what i notice is at the track it is a super competitive atmosphere. Which leads to more aggressive behaviors, which is intimidating for some people where trail riding is more laid back and basically chill.
I do think the trail community has a different focus. MX is competitive, so people can be competitive. Trail riding isn't. While I don't share trail info online, I'll always invite people to go riding with.
The cost difference is huge. I learned on a clapped out 1982 XL185 that I got for free and rode trails through orchards in Marysville. Got super discounts on parts and gear thanks to a homie at CHM and basically learned to ride for almost free. And for some people trail riding is the ONLY way to afford to ride 👍😁👍 and luckily it’s the best kind of riding!
A lot of downtime at the track , a few laps of practice and then a 4 lap moto , then you have to wait for hours for your second moto , it takes all day
i grew up in colorado and rode their trails from when i was 15yrs old. in my 30's i got into enduro and found that community very fun and welcoming! loved the atmosphere at an endure race!!
I just got into moto/trail riding a couple years ago. Not a very good rider but I enjoy getting out and doing trail clearing and building trails. No fees or having to depend on a moto track gate to be open to ride is nice.
Ya know, this channel is by for the most informative dirt bike channel, I've found on you tube. This here is a great video. But your channel has so many others. It should be the go-to channel for anyone interested in getting into dirt bikes. You guy's are really doing a great job.
I've learned more from this man more than anyone! God bless you, brother! I pray that this channel expands in subscribers by multiples of ten! If anyone deserves it, it is this passionate off-road motorcycling specialist - Mr. Jay-C! 💪
Great points also trail riding provides an opportunity to ride for the rest of your life & well into old age it’s also diverse in terms of mixing with like minded people from all over the world I’ve ridden in groups of 5 or 6 each of us from different countries & backgrounds it’s just a fabulous activity…!!!
trail riding has more frequent injuries but much less severe. bruises cuts and sprains are pretty common but concussions broken bones or dislocations are much due to mostly lower speeds and less time in the air.
I can't wait to my kids are old enough to go on trail riding trips. I still have about 5-10 more years. Until then I ride a place call Bundy Hill off-road park and some local tracks when I can here in southern Michigan.
You're one of my favorite CZcams dirtbike personalities. Great knowledge, honesty and overall demeanor. Thanks for sharing the things you do. Love it! Cool when you hang with Rado too lol.
I'm glad you made this video. I never received a podium win in MX of off-road. And so I decided a trail ride with a view was the key to enjoyment in the sport. Its still a sport, regardless of a finish line. And if you make it back home in one piece without any injury's, then that's just an added bonus.
Loved the theme of this video. I love to trail ride but it's just so far to get to great trail riding areas. So I moto to stay in shape, but I have to admit, I love moto too. Thanks for putting in all the work to put this together.
I’m 37, haven’t ridden trails or track in a good 10 years. Used to race a lot at glen Helen, and also ride plated dual sports up local socal trails but I no longer know anyone who rides. So going to glen Helen is my next best thing. Safer then getting injured out in the middle of nowhere all alone. I’m going to start racing SRA Grand Prix like I used to long ago. Safe environment and the track is pretty simple with few simple tabletops ghat can be rolled at worst scenario. Watched some recent CZcams vids and lots of slow dudes so I won’t feel so bad being the slow guy now since I’m def not going to be fast like I once was. Def won’t be trying to win or prove anything, as long as I get some laps in and can hang onto the bars I’ll be stoked 😂😂
Great presentation, I started riding trails at a young age. It’s especially fun if you can camp overnight eat a great steak, then continue the next morning after a great breakfast. One thing that you don’t mention is all the rattlesnakes that are usually not a bid deal until you disrupt them as they are resting under rocks, etc. Thank god I haven’t been chased by a bear yet. Great comparison. Al
I prefer trail/adventure riding because I like to take in the scenery, ride at a chill pace, no pressure, exploring new places and finding cool views and remote camp spots. Going around in circles hitting the same jumps over and over doesn't sound interesting at all to me. I don't even enjoy watching motocross, I'd rather watch joe schmoe on youtube ride around in the forest or in the mountains on his tw200.
Yup I ride a 1998 xr250 I have a 2020 yz450 also a lkx300r but the xr and the 300 r goes anywhere. I live in Kingman AZ so I know hard rides the xr is far superior than anybody gives credit, I have had them all at 62 so go from the trails anyway.
Hey Jay! Thanks for remembering the UP love man! I'm still discovering new trails up here, every day something new, and challenging! I liked all your points too...great video, thanks!
I’m in the middle on my riding preference because I personally like a good rough natural terrain turn track best. Can’t beat the views on a trail ride though!
I’m all but done with MX and started trail riding and racing sprint enduros. I don’t have the desire to race at the intensity needed for MX. Yes it’s a little safer but you get so much more riding time. Edited: agreed off road people are friendlier, more willing to help and don’t have attitudes.
@@MikesBikes66H exactly! Guys in my class actually invited me over to their campers to have dinner with their families because they saw I was by myself! I’ve never seen that in 40 years of moto!
Definitely would try out a track some time but I like trail riding, and like jay says, I feel more comfortable out in the wilderness. A track would overwhelm me, and make me feel like I don’t have any business on a track because I would be one of the guys just cruising around lmao
Love your vids, learn a lot, your positive energy is very uplifting. I just trail ride but would like to try riding a mx course but if I got roosted on purpose by a punk I would punch em out, haha
The main reason why trail riding is better can be wrapped up in the following conversation, which happens all the time... “Hey , man, what do you think is over that hill/around that corner/down that path?” ANSWER: “I don’t know, let’s go find out!” Awesome!
Then you have riders like me, kinda a hybrid of woods & mx. We ride mx and woods very often and really makes for fun trail riding but increases the risk even more so. Basically hitting the trails at a race pace with being competitive with your buddies. Definitely enjoy the adventure of the woods! Did you ride the Tomahawk trail loop in MI?
I dont think one is better than the other. They are both fun for different reasons; MX for competitive juices, trail riding for the scenar, simple fun and comradary. I have a WR450F and a YZ450FX to cover both. The WR is street legal for dual sporting.
I aggree with some here, but there is alot of negativity towards mx I feel. At my club everyone is super friendly. In sweden we also have a race serie where the mxclubs competes in 3man teams in divisions, this is alot of fun! I would stay away from people, tracks and clubs that are so negative. If your local club is like this that sucks..
Even though your riding in a per say wilderness I would still carry bear spray and pistol. Now the bike will scare off most bears. If you stop to take a lunch break, Bears smell food.
Got my first bike when i was 6 and only rode trails here in the North East my whole life, mostly at the abandoned Asbestos Mines, a little of everything there, but i always wanted to race MX so bad, and now almost 30 years later, my son only races MX and does no trail riding, here the trails are closed to dirtbikes, they say they tear them up worse then the Side by sides, but they obviously don't, when i was a kid i rode my CR60R and my YZ80, and my YZ125, all through town and the back roads to get a few towns over, and could always use any trails, now people B!tching at you every where for riding them, even the only local track that we made last year, town people are trying to get it shut down, because the noise and the dust, and who ever they are.....Their IDIOTS, leave the kids alone and let them ride!
For Trail or MX? I have O'neil's for Enduro/trail riding , the Elements model. I paid about $228.00, I have put them through hell and back many times over about a 3 year period, often riding hard for 3 hours at a time. I couldn't ask for a better boot, though I'm sure there are experts out there that will say I didn't spend enough. My boots look like hell now and have some cracks and dents but not so they are in any way subject to seeing me getting injured. The soles look like they could go another three years easily, I guess that is the one thing that amazes me mostly, the soles, bullet proof.
How concerned are you about avoiding a broken foot or toe? I ride a lot of rocky & rooty trails in the PNW. I bought Sg12's last year & I'm glad I did. Broke a toe a few years ago in a decent but softer boot (Tech 7).
Get something decent, not cheapo boots. I found a pair of o neal boots on the side of the road on a dual sport ride.. Almost brand new except where it looks like a footpeg went through in the ankle area. I did glue them together and have been using them for years cause my alpinestars tech 8 are old and too much time to deal with the booties. I don't race anymore but the cheapo o neal's feel like wearing tennis shoes compared to the a stars As a general rule get the best equipment you can, better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
I rode up there over 20 years ago for a Part Unlimited ride and it was one of my first taste of Trail riding and I thought it was amazing with so much different terrain and great trails.
I bought and built a crf 450x for dual sport. A dirt bike with a plate. Dual sport for me after my mx career is over, in my sixties now raced from 70 to 2000.
Motocross is for the young. Trail riding is what you do when you retire from motocross. It’s a constant adventure. That’s what makes it so addictive.
Alternately, there's off-road racing. Enduro, harescramble, etc. I didn't start racing until my 20s but I've only touched an MX track three times. But yes, there is a difference between "trail riding" and "Enduro"
