One of the most common questions I get asked is, "Pat, what is really the difference between a goal and a vision. Is there really one? Isn't it the same thing? If it's different, what's different?"
The reality is that there's a very big difference between a goal and a vision, and in this video I dive into how they're different, the benefits of both of them, and whether or not a person can be both a great visionary and an incredible goal setter.

Hey pat! A vision is the big picture, a goal a stepping stone to get to that vision, and then the steps are small tasks that you do to complete the goal. It's like this VISION is split up into goals and goals are spilt into steps!
Visionary: papapapapapa.... 2:40
Goal Setter: tutututatatata... 1:41 :D
I think you just need to patapatapatapata as I understood right ;)
We just need to pit a pat our way to success, I guess. :D
Sharad Saxena 😂😂😂
I have always been more organized when I Write things down. Thank you for sharing!
Love you videos Patrick. All so relevant for my continued success. Thank you!
Thank you. This really helps me to get to the root of who I am. I love your vids and will continue to share.
Just watched a few of your earlier videos, and while there's always room for improvement, I think your channel already started off at top tier quality (and it's only gotten better). Thank you for setting aside your time to be such a great motivator. One day I hope to be like you!
+Viparinama thanks for the feedback.
Thank you for this video and explantion, it was EXACTLY the question I had. Thank you!
Wow, this is awesome! It helps you understand various groups of people in organizations.
Thank you for sharing this difference , will improve on my goal settings as from now
Amazing info, makes total sense. Some of us just starting up have to play both roles. It took me 1 year to get someone onboard to work with me on the business. My team mate totally is the visionary i feel like go getter, the trigger man, the go to guy on 4 and long.
I am going to enjoy watching you grow this channel!
your content is real and straight to the point!
+NattyNoWhey thanks.
love all your videos always inspiring!!!motivating!!!!
U are amazing now I get why sometime things don't go my way TEAM UP YES !
I can apply this on the work and private life. Thanks for making me think.
I’m definitely a goal setter and I’ve accomplished a lot of my goals... One of the things that I struggle with is reaching a goal and then I get a sense of fulfillment and then a touch of boredom or even depression because it was my main focus the whole time. It would cool if you could talk about that because at some point I found myself asking ... “what’s the point?” If it is a short term high to reach for something.
Trully God of Entrepreneurs!!!
Loved this. All around great video!
Mind blowing! This is the first time I heard this concept!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts
Time and again I have been asked this question by a near one or a close one. since I have opened my eyes to this world, I never found an answer. I dont know for how long but for now i'm experimenting both now and feel I have a definition for both. PAT, one of my goal is to try and comment on the videos i have watched, seen time and again like the many below and to make it a point to acknowledge my mentor. Here is a like and a thank you with so many lines it has to be genuine :) :p
Pat this video is amazing. keep it awesome
Thankyou so much Bro.
Great information, thanks a lot!
Thanks man, I needed to hear this
Well explained. Thanks
Man I would love to have a friend like you in real life .. Life could be insanely balanced having a friend like you. Thanks Pat : )
was a great video pat! i will improve and separate one between the other. I was kinda confused about the difference between one and the other. greetings from monterrey mexico.
Well Patrick... broke it down nicely once again.
The beauty of this information is by knowing where I stand I can then fine tune my standing. I will argue that I have a bit of both but certainly 80% Goal Driven and 20% Vision driven, why because I spend a lot time working on the short term goals that aim to archive the vision...sometimes when the goal takes too long I get irritated or bored, and take on another goal (within the vision) archive it, get motivated and revisit the last goal. So most of the time I see myself aiming on the next goal and almost blurred up on the vision. And by the way, I'm South African and we can't Keep Calm Either!
+Alex Mat lol.
I have been up all night watching your videos.. they're very addicting... If you get the chance can you go into detail about a WOW brain vs an OWW brain. Ppl that are amazed at their results and are wow'd at the outcome of continues hard work vs ppl that take pain and let it bury or lead them into a mindset of wanting to throw in the tile. I think this topic will be great coming from a person as assertive as you and can influence masses just as all your videos have.. I hope this reaches you Pat. Have a great day 😀
Very nice tips about this.
loved it. right on point
Thanks for the video
-Morgan
KEEP ON PREACHING BROTHER, I LOVED THIS SERMON!
+Mr H 👊🏼
Damn - on point! learned something. Thank you
Kudos.. eye opener 👏👏👏🎉🎉🎉
Such clarityyyyyyyyyyy omg
hello! love your videos, learn a lot and get motivated after watching them what makes me work and learn more. I am currently working on lunching/starting an entertainment company, can you please give some advices, what should I start with? and how can a person surround himself with equal minded people?
Mr. Bet-David, this is a video that is an Ah-Ha moment and I thank you so much for it. I'm a goal setter due to how the Marine Corps has trained me and therefore never really thought about a vision for myself. Prime example, right now my goal is to have a Tesla Model S at the end of the year but my vision on seeing myself in that vehicle, I haven't even given it a moment of thought. I have been just saying that I need to do X amount each week to reach the goal. So here I am, setting goals that are just crazy to me at the moment, just to motivate myself but I have been going no where in getting close to accomplishing them. But now I am going to mix vision into my efforts and see how much better I can do. Point of this comment is, you gave me something that I need to learn more about, could you later on make a video about how to be a better visionary? Or is there a book you recommend that I can read? Thank you for your time Mr. Bet-David and I look forward to your next video!
+NapalmDeath great job on the way you processed the issue. I'm working on a book that's about visionaries.
I always kind of knew I was visionary. Now it is confirmed. Subscribed!
+Altangerel Batbaatar 👊🏼
Got this Video at Right time.
This is good advice for people who are looking for a co-founder or other people in their company. I myself, would admit that I'm often too much thinking about the big dream instead of what it will take to get there... I'm a visionary but I get painter's dilemma a lot! 😂
Great video...
You are helping me to get my business and life back on track and I appreciate what you are doing, please keep it up.
Will you be speaking live somewhere near Daytona Beach anytime soon?
+sheldon landon I'm not sure about Daytona beach but I will in Jacksonville, Miami & Fort Lauderdale.
Cool, when are you in Jacksonville?
Have never seen a great salesman like you.
Great content!
A vision is what you see coming.
A goal is what your striving for.
great video... regards from México
Do you have a video on identifying your own strengths or those in others?
take a big 5 personality test!
Thanks Dear Patrick, could you address on Purpose, Vision, and Goal how they should relate?
Just mind-blowing, Keep Going Patrick :-)
+Geraud KAMENI 🍻
Yes, yes, yes! So accurate.
Visions written into concrete Goals is the best combo !!
Exactly my thought ;)
Yep I was thinking the same. You have a central vision from which you set goals.
dudewat212 hell yea
i need that yes.. coaching to my visions
Love the t shirt Pat👍
thank you so much well say....
+wilhemina afrikaner 👊🏼
Nice video 👌
But what about mission is it the same as goals? What is objective, strategy, action plan?
Sir u said vision is a mission but they aren't same vision is basically where we want to go & mission is why we want to go or we can say mission is purpose of an organisation
I am definitely more of visionary. I do struggle with deadlines and time management but I sure do initiate ideas. Need to work on time management.
Always a pleasure! $$
5:32 Well said Pat!
Good!
is there a video about who we should listen to as an entrepreneur?
Can u have both visionary & goal setting mindset? Or only one
You are awesome ! Thank you! Can you please make a video on whats the best thing to offer for project collaborators, debt or equity (share of revenue, etc) and what are the pros and cons of choosing either, especially if one doesn't have any investment/backing/funding yet.. Thanks again !
Interesting. I'll add that to the list and if we get more requests of this topic, we'll shoot it sooner.
Thanks very much ! Looking forward to it !
It helps....I want to be more organised pls share some tips
Thank you Patrick! I really appreciate the pragmatism of your advice! This is a very inspiring distinction and I think I might be rather a visionary type, always envisioning, talking and dreaming about what I want without being able to make it real yet. So I have a question: any tips on how or where one can find goal setters typically? A certain type of activity, job, sport, subject or hobby they might prefer? Any suggestion would be highly appreciated ;) Thx again =D
+Inszenierung ask people you know close to you who know great goal setters. They're everywhere.
set goals to make your vision a reality.
While watching this video a question came to my mind I want your opinion on it, if a visionary for example wants to build a great family, and this visionary found a partner that meets all the criteria he has set for himself, would it be helpful if that partner is the goal-setting type?
I believe it would be very helpful if your partner was your opposite. So for example if a male is very "manly" they would attract very girl girls who are highly in touch with their femininity. This will balance it out.
So should one focus more on achieving the time bound goals or accomplishing the ultimate mission /purpose/ vision?
Or are both activities in sync with each other?
+Sanjit Misra both but one will generally be stronger than the other.
+VALUETAINMENT Thanks for the reply.
Very interesting points and views, they all make sense.
Here is a question: Are there any cases of people that combine/balance traits from both the visionary and the goal setter?
+Panayiotis Mathicolonis yes. Many have a combination of both.
This reminds me of a story.
Someone asked a guy who is working outdoor. "What are you doing?"
A guy who is a "goal setter" may say "I am stacking bricks."
Another guy who is a "visionary person" may say "I am building a house."
I myself am in a weird position.
When it comes to schoolwork, I feel like a natural goal setter.
I always work towards the next deadline and do that sufficiently well.
But like you said, once I finish that goal until I see the next goal/deadline, I'm slacking off.
On the other hand, when it comes to any other personal interest, I feel like a visionary.
I can see the vision, or then end result.
But I'm not really good at working towards them or even setting possible goals in the first place.
How would I be able to bring together my goal setting and visionary capabilities together?
Hariharan Karimanal you might wanna try gauging which of those aspects you're more passionate at. Then work your way improving the weaker side on that chosen field/area.
I think there is not such a separation between goal setter and visionary, those are just a kind of skill depending on the context. I think it depends on your mood. Hence, you may have a vision for all aspects of your life career, social life, family et... It's the dream part. Then you fix goal to make make the vision happens.
pat I have a question to ask what's the difference between mission and goal?
i need to get better at setting goals
number 1 !!!!
Same as strategy and tactics
What if you had an abstract(visionary) thinking session to develop a system for goal setting in the short/near and longterm ?! 🤔
Your shirt speaks volumes. It's so true! Hahaha
How do I find out whether I'm a Visionary or a Goalsetter? 🤔
Patrick, how did you create and refine the vision about your business. Is it something you find a niche on? Or you followed a similar structure delivering great service?
+Miguel Maza it's different for everyone. However, ask yourself a simple question. How do you envision the future of your business looking. How big? What type of impact? And keep diving in with those questions until you catch yourself getting fired up.
Thanks for clarifying that for us! I've been testing all sorts of goal setting tools for the past few years. The best is Wunderlist. I tried Trello, Quip, Runrun, excel, pomodoro, writing on a paper, iPhone's check list or notes.... But I spend so much more time testing them and trying to find the perfect way to make it work, than actually using...Haha I even made the goal of knowing what's my mission in this life and couldn't achieve that. I guess I miss a clear vision too. Can you help with some insight?
I feel I'm running out of time... I should be focusing on one area, but I love learning about everything. The thing is "the more I know, less I understand". I'm studying philosophy now as you might guess. I like Kaballah's definition that we're here to share. My vision is to be a very wise man, very rich, and yet very simple and not selfish. I'm writing with my heart. Sorry if I missed the point..
What's your purpose of wanting to be a very wise man?
I know the power of knowledge. Some people don't. I see people making excuses for not living the perfect life. I've changed a lot in personal growth and even quit biting my nails, which is clearly an anxiety problem. And did through meditation. I'm not sure how it happens, I'm trying to give people advice on how important some things are, but they are not listening. I think its a problem with my lack of credentials. That's why I want to be a recognized wise man. To make people want to learn.
I'm amazed by tv shows like Dog Whisper and Supper Nanny. Have you seen Jo Frost? It's amazing how psychology can changes things so quickly. Some people deal with the same problem their entire life. I've seen hypnosis curing traumas. There is a lot of knowledge around there, and lots of scams too. My purpose is to be wise to help people with the truth. We could be living in a better world with technology and being wise which I think is a combination of knowledge plus values.
How do you know ur a visionary or goal setter?
FEEDBACK: The link to the specific article does not work
How does being a visionary relate to identity ? Seeing oneself as already achieving it. Ex. I am a 6 pack toting gym head or I am fininacially independent
I'm a PURE visionary. I'm trying to develop goal setting habits though.
Im a visionary but my goal setting skills are quite good. Now im starting to question if i really am a visionary... all i know is i am constantly thinking like a visionary. Everything in the back of my head works like a visionary. I have so many ideas and i know i want to make them a reality so i try to force myself to set as many goals as i can.
Actually, i just logged into facebook to check if i had any messages from colleagues and i saw an old post that i made three years ago. It sounded visionary. My faith is restored; i am definitely a visionary.
How about the mission?
can you please do a video on How to deal with rejection as a new entrepreneur?
+Thato TheGreat not a bad idea. I'll keep that in mind.
I'm definitely a visionary. How can I find my running mate who is a goal setter so we can go out there and as a team crush it ? I want to partner recruit just a handful of people who are hungry, driven, outgoing, ethical, who want to be a leader. how can I find them ?
I also am definitely a visionary. I do set my short term goals and nail them but in an opportunists manner... I know I will need to bring on board an enthusiastic Goal Setter to join the team in the near future.
Cintia PFA find them on these videos! And the comments!
Warriors of Success thank you.
That's a great idea!!
I'm a goal setter looking for a visionary. I have a huge vision of what I would like but I keep reverting back to my goals and forgetting after a couple days or weeks what the vision is instead of making it happen. in search of a visionary type running mate.
reinerio rivera that's me and I need someone like you.
Great content! Can you tell me the difference between vision and mission?
+Monique Appels a vision is usually stemmed from a deep mission.
I'm a PhD student but interested in up-scaling a turkey farm to 1800 turkeys. Should I focus completely on my career or side-project the startup business?
+DrScully25 can you do both?
I'm living in a different country from my farm for the next 3 years unfortunately.
This video probably explains it better than a dozen books on goal-setting all rolled into one...
I'm 24 years old and I'm planning to make a business I want to be a successful entrepreneur one day, I have a lot of goals but when I kept on thinking and thinking on it its like became a vision coz I want more and more and do more, I'm preparing to start a small business but I'm scared what if I fail? A lot of negative thought's that I'm thinking what if? but I have vision and I wanted to be that one day.but I'm nervous to start it what if it will not click what I'm going to do to achieve those goals and vision?
Nelly Grace that fear is very common. Everyone is fearful at first. You must get with the right people, find what motivates you, and educate yourself in the area of expertise you want to explore.
Goals vs. Vision: What's More Important?
Key Takeaways:
Vision#Goal
-Long-term# Short-term
-No Lifespan#Lifespan
-No Deadline#Deadline
-Mission#Checklist
-Pain the picture#Directional
-Dream#Logic
The goal setters need to surround themselves with visionaries, vice versa.
Can a person be a mixed of both visionary and goal setter?
Goals are shorter with deadlines and visions are long term and is the mission of the company. Goal setters have a problem with self-sabotage because they can convince themselves they've arrived. It is very important to partner correctly to fill your gaps.
what if someone think both ways?? he thinks about visions and make goals to achieve it.. can that happen?
+Priyam Arya most do but it's generally one outweighing the other. That's why the key is finding a matching running mate.
+VALUETAINMENT ok.. actually i am 24 and have started my journey.. and i am going to be an all timer... but i can't afford a team.. we are only 2 guys.. so will this at any point create problem??
What happens when a goal fails to come true before the deadline..??! Should you move on..?!! Or try again..?! If you do try again, does it become a vision.?!
