  • Orisa. The horse of Overwatch. Or Whorse idk chief. She was one of two tanks who got major reworks going into Overwatch 2, yet she's near universally hated. Orisa is Overwatch's Protector Turned Tyrant. Let's talk about it.

Hello! I have a poll in the CZcams community tab where you can vote for the next video! Though it does seem there's a clear winner, for the moment I'd appreciate it if you could leave any ideas for future videos underneath it!
Edit: I also unlocked channel memberships (and made a community post about them) but I'm wondering, should I use them or should I wait? For the moment, I'm unsure what perks I could give. Any suggestions would be appreciated anyway! For the moment my only thought is "members gain access to videos earlier". I could also make "behind the scenes" videos for members? Lemme know

The original Orisa was a guardian, an anchor for the team who could punish enemies for overextending in the main fight. Now though, she's one of the most Rushdown brawler tanks in the game because her abilities incentivise getting into enemies faces to eat projectiles and fling them into walls. A thing about orisa I don't see people mentioning is that she is the product of hero design philosophy. Every role in ow has a couple of anti bullying characters. These characters are designed to be picked when you are being hard focused by a team and still let you get some value. Moira in support, torb in dps, and orisa in tank. These characters are never meant to make plays or go get value. They exist as an out for players who feel helpless during their match because x player is spawn killing them, or they are getting full dove, etc. The problem with a tank that does this is that tank skill expression is based on how much focus you can take without dying. So a character built to reduce frustration for being focused reduces the skill requirement for tanking as a whole.

I nicknamed Orisa "The Fun Police" because anytime I'm having fun on Rein or by some miracle I'm actually popping off on him, suddenly a Cow shows up and sucks the fun out of the entire match. It's such a fucking drag to play against Cow, especially considering that I'm a low ranked metal player (Gold 5) and I'm mostly on the casual/fun side of the game and while I understand that losing is not fun but having my pick permanently invalidated because there is a Cow and my team is not really familiar with the idea of picking the supports off it usually just boils down to a slog of a game. I used to be a hardcore tank main and in that sense mostly playing the older tanks Hog/Rein with the occasional monkey or sometimes Ram. But recently I sort of migrated over to playing DPS cuz whenever I have a good day and I have the chemistry with the randoms on my team it just ends cuz Cow.

One of Orisa’s issues is she’s always been Blozzard’s go-to to try and rein in an unfun meta, which is part if why she’s so heavily stated. She lost her identity by her creator trying to make her the solution to a problem she was never asked to solve.

Well I remember before Orissa came out people were begging for more tanks and especially shield tanks, this is because everyone loves Reinhardt and to an extent Winston as such when a new shield tank was made people were ecstatic, funny how eventually they complained about double shield when in the early days all people were hoping for was a new shield tank, pretty much every "fan concept" tank hero had a shield. So I would say it makes plenty of sense why she was quite well recieved at the time.

As an OW 1 orisa main, i LOVED her old playstyle. You could be far more aggressive with her than many people realised but you still had to be cautious. Barrier could be deployed forward as a place to run to, in the supports faces forcing them out of position at the cost of your defence and even triple barrier uptime tech at the start of a fight by predeploying barrier, shooting one up in the air to get it on cooldown so it dropped down when they were about to destroy the first and the cooldown being done by the time the second was taken out if you really wanted to hold a choke. it was a stationary barrier but it had skill expression.
halt giving you enviromental kills on entire groups of people even though it was such a slow and obvious ability was so satisfying and gave you a presence on the battlefield that was hard to replicate. it was dangerous, not because of the ability itself but because of the follow up that came after. it was an ability that baited your team into working together which is a miracle that OW2 could use.
And fortify. they have made it do too much in 2. before it was an outplay button for when a rein thought he could shatter you or almost a last stand where they have broken through all your defences so now you just have to stand in their face hoping that you get a kill or your barrier is back off cooldown. but now? it has so many effects its lost its identity (off the top of my head its: damage reduction, crit immunity, overhealth, slow, CC immunity, weapon overheat reduction.) its not a "last stand" its the run is screaming ability where you do everything better but not in a meaningful way that is enjoyable to use. you cant hold fortify to outplay, you have to just press it on cooldown so you can keep standing in the frontline.
Bongo was such an amazing ult, it was a teamwide nanoboost as long as you kept the thing alive, it was not a fight win but it tipped the odds in your favour. Terra surge is... fine. its not as bad as people claim but its just so uninteresting. its like a zarya grav but worse, it can chunk health like a sigma but sigma does it better. half the time you see a moment you want to use it you actualy cant because you have to stick yourself in the centre of the entire team and will explode long before you get to hit for meaningful damage. it gets you a kill on people that have overextended or lets you take the last bit of payload in overtime, there is no spectacle to it like the lightshow of a well placed bongo.
Now the javelin. why. what was the reasoning. orisa the gental protecter, you know what she needs? the ability to impale people from accross the map and slash people in the face over and over so hard that it pushes them away letting you trap them in a corner while you blend them to death. nothing says gentle better than that. i dont have much to say about them because, honestly, they are fine abilities, but why put them on orisa.
they have even had to rework her personality to make the new abilities fit her in the slightest. all her voicelines have become cold. she always had a warmth behind her, telling her team to "please stand behind the barrier" but now she doesnt have that, she just looks at completeing the task without much care for those around her. her voiceline where tracer asks how orisa can catch people, orisa says "i can give you a demonstration, start running" the start running isnt friendly or warm, its said almost as a threat which is just at odds to who she was and the characterisation she was given through the years of OW1. its a completely diffrent character, so much to the point that i wish they had just removed orisa from the game and came up with a new person to replace her instead of changing her to be unrecognisable. im still holding out hope that they bring back original orisa but they have dug themselves too deep at this point for be to belive it will happen.

About the tabs in the menu, I do think the heroes showcased should be changed around a little.
QP- Can stay Tracer, her abilities are blue, she's the face of the game like how QP is the main game mode
Comp- Change it from Winston to Reaper, the competitive theme is literally the music from the "Alive" cinematic, red is Talon's color, Reaper has red in his abilities, he's somewhat of a tryhard
Arcade- Put it back to Dva, she's literally a character who spends all her time playing games, like what you'd do in an arcade
Custom- Keep it Sombra, the purple color and focus on altering the base game's code to create a personalized experience fits her

  • @Ansi1709
    @Ansi1709 Před 19 dny +21

Honestly, i think the main thing making her so gosh darn hard to kill, is that she'll fortify, and then spinblock/run right after to nulify most dmg for about 6 secs or so. and then you have a window to hurt/kill her before the cd's are off again.
But damn if it aint heartbreaking to be having fun as a rein/doom/hammond, only for the enemy tank to swap to Orisa in QP.

Orisa was has been my main since the day she released. I played her at a friend's house and Orisa alone was the reason I went home and Overwatch. For the entirely of OW1 she was my main, I'd say probably 90% of all my playtime was as her. I was not playing Overwatch, I was playing Orisawatch. I've never been super into shooters, so I loved having a big tanky character built around assisting my team, not just killing the enemy team.
When OW2 came out I was genuinely distraught for a day, and it still frustrates me to this day that they essentially removed the primary reason I played OW. Since then, I've expanded my hero usage and actually like playing some DPS and healers, and I've gotten better at shooters in general, so I don't entirely mind her new kit, but it still bugs me how much they changed my beloved robot.

like the only real issue oldrisa used to have was that she enabled really nasty double shield poke comps. If she was such an issue in these comps they should have just made her more like ramattra. Ram is sort of what old orisa was but with a lot of what made her unfun to deal with removed or tweeked. He has the form that makes him much more durable, the shield, the ball that does light amounts of CC. But unlike Oldrisa, his ball doesnt jerk you out of place from any direction and its much less annoying to fight while still being kinda fair in the situations its made for. His nemesis form has a lot more nuance than old fortify I feel due to how it changes his type of combat and how its practically a different stance with a much higher ame knowledge requirement to get full use out of. Even his sheild is Id argue better since it has more health from waht I recall, is a bit more vercitile with placement, but also is much harder to actually spam for double shield comps due to its cool down and how rammatra wants to rotate it with his other cooldowns. Unironically had this just built oldrisa a bit more like how they did ramattra this stupid new horse wouldnt have had to become one of the worst things to deal with in the entire game. Not to mention if double poke was an issue, sigma AS WELL AS THE SUPPORT CORE ENABLING IT should have seen some tweeks to make those bunker comps less viable. Cuz it wasnt JUST oldrisa that was the issue, it was a lot of heroes having very specific negative interactions. Same thing happened with goats, multiple heroes were able to enable really degenerate play once brig was released to fully form that core.

I haven't quite finished the video yet, but I think the best Orisa design- much like the best Bastion design- would be a mix of the two.
Give her the Javelin spin she has now, the pull and shield she used to... And MAYBE keep the fortify if the turn it into a passive activated by crouching or even a small part of her spin and ult.

    • @sev1120

If they want to keep Javelin Toss, have it be a part of the Javelin Spin (like, press primary fire while spinning to toss Javelin)

Talking as someone with almost 0 ranked experience, people DO pick orisa first on qp, but whats more annoying is that people WILL pick Orisa if they lose the first fight. I truly mean it, before all new characters were made acessible from the start i would play against orisa 0/10 time on qp because the second someone started losing they would change (Now its lower cause they dont change to orisa, the tank changes to mauga). The only exception was 1- tanks that were winning the entire game so stayed on whatever other tank they were playing or 2 - people who only play what they want not caring if its good or not (a thing thats surprisngly rare on qp, as people counterswap a lot on there)
I really liked playing orisa in ow1 and kinda liked the rework at first, but as time went on i felt off the hype with it. i'm not sure what could be done to help with the horse, to some extension I feel she will always be like ow1 bastion in a way, where on qp and low ranks people will always just pick them when they dont want to lose. But in all honesty I am way more worried about mauga, im pretty sure they rebuffed the dps passive only because of him, the man is one of the most annoying tanks to deal with in qp.

    Regarding Orisa's lore and subsequent design: that's a non-issue.
Her lore did change to reflect her rework, and there's literally an interaction between Orisa and Moira that touch upon this.
She was a naïve 1 month year old robot, and has learned more since her creation, becoming a domineering beast. This can also be seen in her other interactions and voice lines as well. She grew up and had character development. That's a good thing, and very few of the cast actually had that. Ffs, DF didn't even have that, and he changed role completely.

I loved her design, lore, kit, emotes, voice lines, etc. As you mentioned in your video, her kit was designed around her being a PROTECTOR. I would expand you point with that her voice lines and adorable emotes added to being a OW-skin Baymax. A character meant to help and protect normal citizens in a unintimidating way. It makes perfect sense that a child genius made her in such a way that a child wouldn't be afraid of and would feel safe around the robot horse lady.
A lot of things did turn me off from OW2 (I never touched the game). At first, I decided to wait for the promised story mode. I'm more of a RPG than a first-person shooter gamer, and I adored the characters and wanted to see the story OW1 kept teasing us with. Then I saw it was 5v5 and only one tank. I loved playing off the other tank member of my team in OW1. Some plays were annoying (double shield for example) but it was nice to share the "tank responsibility". Instead it falling on one person on the team. A badly position tank back 6v6 could make you lose a team fight, I assume it is even more rough in 5v5.
The final nail on me never downloading OW2 (other than no story mode), was Orisa's new gameplay. If I ever did pick up OW2, I knew I wouldn't enjoy her new kit. At the time, I just thought the spear replacing her shield/halt abilities didn't seem like Orisa I loved. Your video helped me explained WHY I felt that way. The OW2 Orisa does not feel like your friendly neighborhood protector.

Funny enough, orisas rework is the only rework so far that does happen in the actual lore as well. Efi made a combat update on orisa so she could go help the rest of the world ( and from the last released story about her, orisa and efi are gonna be joining overwatch). And the old orisa is not gone on lore, efi gave ow1 orisa abilities to the old units that orisa was inspired by, so now numbani can protect itself bc everyone has a ow1 orisa at home, while efi and orisa go fight null sector

I didn't play OW2 but in OW1 Orisa was my Go To Tank. I probably didn't play her "optimally" but I had fun nonetheless, her kit and slow playstyle were really enjoyable for me in a game that can be very fast and overwhelming. A tank that focused almost entirely on defense was just really fun for me, I would always end up prioritizing the safety and survival of my team over myself because Orisa's very defensive nature allowed me to do that being almost always able to hold out for Just Long Enough. Honestly i almost viewed her as a semi support. Sure healers patch up damage when it's done but prevention is the best medicine and I like to thing OW1 Orisa did that well from when I played her, and well it fits the character story and personality too, a guardian. OW2 Orisa just sounds... not very fun, it sounds like another Rodhog situation, a DPS with a Tanks healthpool and endurance. Here's to the good memories I have of playing OW1 Orisa, the most fun tank character I ever played in any class shooter, you'll be missed.

I’m honestly glad you mentioned the story/character change that happened because of the abilities being changed. While I understand it was to keep Orisa afloat in the new format I think it’s particularly odd to have the protector become offensive.
It just feels like Orisa fell for Doom’s ideology, “only through conflict to we evolve” when she is meant to be the antithesis to his character. Maybe I’m just bored of the mature jaded protector trope and thought her sweet optimism was a breath of fresh air.

I loved to play Orisa back in OW1, when she came out, I immediately fell in love with her and put in quite a bit of time to learn to play her. Then when OW2 came out and I saw she was reworked, I was super excited to learn how to play her in 5v5.
Now shes literally the only tank I will play. If its not her, its Sigma. I'm the first pick Orisa, and all I do is play her aggressively. But in the elo I'm in (plat), with the entire enemy focusing me, my team never seems to understand that I'm pulling aggro, and they don't capitalize on it. People just assume that she's meant to be passive like she was before, but she can't be THAT passive anymore, and as the solo tank, people need to understand that the reason why she has so much survivability, is her lack of shielding. If I have healing on me, and I play normally, I never die. But if I'm always focused, with little no healing, I will always die. Some people just don't learn or listen and just claim she's terrible to play/play against instead of just thinking.

You want to hear my opinion? Well here it is:
Orisa, the fuel of nightmares, the demon that plagues most of my comp games and the embodiment of the senator from MGRR. Down here in the nightmarish realm of gold its about 1/3 games you can see a walk out on her and most games my entire team (and I) can try and counter swap for them but her pure ability to stand still and have more strength than what appears to be a steel wall is crazy. She torments my team by running directly past tank and into the backlines and most of the time walks out alive with killing out supports too.
Yeah I don't like her, I played ow1 (although not for the longest time) and she felt balanced(ish) but this new version is everything oppressive packed onto a character, ult shutdown? Javelin. CC? Javelin and spin. Anti CC and damage reduction? Fortify. She is strong, not unkillable but just enough to make playing overwatch feel like I'm pushing a rock up a hill only for it to roll back down and crush me.
Thanks for reading my rant, share opinions in the replys if you want.

Back in 20- when Orisa was new, I would never pick her. Then and now I'm an extremely casual Lucio main, but with weekly challenges, I was forced me to leave my comfort zone.
So whenever I was on a KotH map and not playing Lucio, I would lament how I missed booping people off the edge. And then I found the best way for me to accomplish that as a tank is to play Orisa, and javelin spin and toss. It feels great.

Orisa was created to counter doomfist, so, there's some options.
Option 1. Make Orisa an anti-dive tank. Give her abilities to restrict enemy mobility and a resistance to CC effects
Option 2. Make her an anti-CC tank, with abilities designed around negating enemy crowd control effects, letting her serve as an anchor for the team
Option 3. Give her every tool in the game to dominate the tank matchup without any abilities to protect her team whatsoever.
Guess which option Blizzard went with

Orisa's problem was always that forrify was too strong and made her basically impossible to punish.
That's the reason double shield was too strong, not the shields themselves.
There's a reason double shield didn't work if you didn't have a Brig and Bap backline, it's because fortify and grasp were too good when coupled to lamp, pack and the ludicrous AoE heals those heroes had.
Also, even with Mauga being able to deal crits against fortify, she still hard countered him.

Just started playing overwatch 2 a few months ago so I have no reference for old orisa, but I will say she's one of if not my favorite tank to play and helped me get familiar with the game and all the heroes abilities, possibly due to her insane survivability. I understand how strong she can be but I really don't understand the immense hate for this character. Especially after these nerfs I just don't understand why people see her as such an oppressive force, at least compared to mauga and even a good hog or ball. Nothing compares to hitting spear predicts, especially on tracers and Sombras. Maybe it's just because I'm new but imo she didn't need to be nerfed so hard, I just think other tanks deserve a buff. I'd love to play more rein or ram but I just don't feel as useful to my team. Again maybe just cause I'm new but that's how I see it

I'm an Orisa main, have been since OW1 and still am even this far into OW2, and I gotta say... I agree with MOST of this video.
I agree that changing her moveset was a massive blow to her personality and identity, even if it was mandatory for her to succeed in a 5v5 format. The peaceful protector has become a battle-hardened war hero. And not just in character design either, also in her new voicelines! She's become more hostile.
[TRACER: How do you catch someone who's running away?]
[ORISA: I will provide a demonstration! ...Start running.]
I find it kinda removes what made her stand out from the rest of the Overwatch cast. Now she's just kinda "Battle Omnic No. something-or-other", rather than Numbani's gentle giant.
However, I do have one issue with this video, and that's at the very end where you claim that Orisa doesn't protect her team anymore. And, while it's true she has no way to passively help her team, this doesn't mean she can't protect them. With Javelin Spin, you can push enemies away from teammates or eat up harmful projectiles such as Moira orbs and sleep darts. Fortify also allows you to bodyblock damage for your team, becoming a meat (or servo?) shield for your teammates.
Just being alive forces the enemy team to focus on you, drawing attention away from your own team. Because if they don't, you can and will dish out damage fast, and can shut down enemies with your Energy Javelin.
Overall, I'm a firm believer that Orisa should be played much more passively than people think. Charging into the enemy team, while distracting and disorienting, is a sure-fire way to leave your team without a tank. If you play passively and stick with the team, you can really cash in on Orisa's incredible survivability and THAT is how you protect your team as Orisa; by forcing enemies to focus you, lest they take heavy damage.

  • @kirbykraftgames
    @kirbykraftgames Před 19 dny +5

To comment on not seeing people lock in Orisa first, I see it happen a lot in the low metal ranks (I've been bouncing between mid bronze to high silver since the end of OW1 but still) because the T500 CZcamsrs say that "Horse is busted" so they'll play Horse, and even with them being awful at managing cooldowns, they'll still win 9/10 times and it is obsurd.
Like, just last night I lost a game because we had the enemy horse just camping our spawn for 5 minutes and no one on my team wanted to counterswap to deal with the Horse besides me
