In 2010 I found myself with a great deal of money in my vacation account. Being a selfish guy, I decided to buy myself a gift. I went to W47th Street in Manhattan and found 2 watches that I was interested in. An IWC Pilot chronograph and a black face Daytona. I stood at the counter for quite some time looking at both watches. The IWC was about $5,000. and the Daytona was $10,400. After a while, the woman behind the counter asked "What's wrong?" I replied "I'm a little nervous, I never spent this much on a watch before" She told me "Buy the Daytona, you can always get your money back" I took her advice. Boris, the owner explained to me that the watch listed for $9,900. and that there was a $500. premium on it. I've always been thankful for their advice and honesty. I have several other watches but this is the one I wear every day. The love affair hasn't ended. Don't settle. Save up for what you really want.

Bought my 116520 white dial around 9 years ago for $9k, don’t remember exactly how much. It was my third Rolex as I already have a Seadweller and a while gold fluted bezel/steel Jubilee 36mm Datejust as well. I enjoy wearing them and I don’t worry resale value. Resale value means nothing if I am not gonna sell it.

I remember when the 116500 white dial black bezel came out I knew it was going to be my grail one day. I went to an AD and had them put my name down for a white dial black bezel. I remember giving them a little back story of how I was a huge daytona cosmograph fan and how I own two of them. They actually brought out the platinum 116506 for me to look at and I didn't know how to react. It was an amazing feeling and I thought I would never see one in person let alone hold one. Long story short, they did give me a call saying the requested watch was in and would be selling shortly at a first come first serve basis. I had the funds but I never pulled the trigger. Going rate at the time was I think 12500$. I'm still looking to own the 116500 one day but I'm still happy with what daytona watches that I have. Cheers

Great video, Mark. I have a similar story as you, but with the FP Journe Chronometre Bleu. For the past 8 years or so, I had my eyes on it as my "grail watch" and every year that passed by without me owning one, I just would feel a little bummed out. I finally managed to get my hands on one last year and paid a king's ransom (number begins with a 5), but since then, it's almost doubled in price. I love the aesthetics of a Daytona so maybe one day I'll try to acquire one as well. In the meantime, I'm just happy with finally being able to acquire my grail watch.

The only additional chrono that I will consider is a 1960s Heuer Autavia, but no modern pieces - they feel dead, with no soul. I do have a fabulous Rolex 5513 from 1967 tho, with plexi crystal, tritium, lug holes and original riveted, plated bracelet. @@TS-er2jc The fact that you address me in caps already tells me how emotionally invested you are. That’s the gambler mindset. Probably a crypto sucker as well. Then when it all goes wrong, you are on the forefront of the angry mob.. Demanding that the government, banks or simply ‘the man’ will compensate you for your own greed gone wrong.

@@HatovimLeTayis you just made another speculation about me. That i'm emotionally invested, have a gambler mindset, a crypto sucker, and will be a part of some angry mob when it all goes down. You should really stop with your speculations.

I've always seen this watch as a unisex watch. It's a bit to small and dainty for me. I'll pass.

As far as Rolexes go, with your height/weight, a 36mm Explorer would look far more appropriate on your wrist. That said, if the Daytona is your grail watch, then enjoy it.
