    I'm having this same issue with my truck replaced, fuel filter, relays, cleaned canister, had a diagnostic and mechanic could not figure out the issue summed it up to being an oil pump which is super expensive to fix so I was hoping it was not. After seeing this video I'm convinced this is my issue and will have him take a look at this tomorrow for sure.

    J.C.,
    I like your common sense approach. I'm a 60 year old guy..
    ole school mechanic that has always done all my own repairs..
    I am a also union certified pipe welder for over 40 years now, and I have a small pipeline and oil field construction company, with mostly old trucks and equipment.. My main welding rig is a 1996 International 4700LP DT 466, with over 650,000 miles,
    that I've been running over 20 years relatively trouble free..
    I have done an in-frame at 400,000, a new 7 speed Spicer trans at 450,000, and new rear end bearings, seals, 4 new dicsc brake calipers, hoses, and all the normal things a truck needs..
    but so far I have never replaced the the turbo or injector pump..
    which I am about to do soon, due to the mileage and a small diesel fuel leak from the injector pump, that I have yet to pin point.. It runs like new and I am still running it daily til I swap out the pump and turbo with some new ones... I just wondered if you had a video on the injector pump replacement of old 96 mechanical type DT 466..? I also am running a 93 Peterbilt 379 with 3406b, 13 spd , with only 400,000 miles, that has a few issues, like with the trans shifting, and air bag suspension levels.. also a 1986 GMC General with a Cummins 400 big cam and a 10 speed trans.. and six other trucks that are all military tractors, and dump trucks, crane ...which all run the Cummins with Allison auto trans.. and a 59 International R190 truck crane with only 700 actual milles , that I bought from the Air Force museum..that was retired in 79.. I plan on a using it after a complete refurb of all the hydraulic seals and what ever else it may need..
    I'm also running a 68 Cat D7E dozer, a 86 Cat D4E dozer,
    a 76 Cat 225 excavator, a small komatsu trackhoe , and five farm and industrial Ford and case , and Swaraj tractors,
    a 2002 Bobcat 753G, JLG 40 4wd manlift, and a JLG scissor lift... My son and I enjoy working together and being self employed.. Keep up the good work and thanks for your videos.

  • @thxfornothin1
    @thxfornothin1 Před 5 lety +2

    This is solid info, JC. The Ford stuff will probably continue to be your most watched videos but there are things to be learned in your non-Ford videos too.
    The only real downside to these are the time you need to put in making them. Time being a finite resource.
    The DT466 . MaxxForce DT, "The legend," as Navistar now calls it is an excellent mid range diesel. You, sir, have fine taste in trucks.

      Thats the point. You aren't a pro and neither are your subscribers. I hope to be as good as you are at working on trucks. I do it because I enjoy it. Not because my schooling and job or business rely on it.
      When I've gathered all the stuff to do so I'll swap a front axle under my F250. A pro would tell me to get one thats already a 4X4. You showed how relatively easy it actually is. Thats the kind of info you show guys like me how to do. Thank you, J C!

    The theory on this was easier for me to follow than trying to understand why the Dodge was holding coolant pressure overnight... this truck sounds good to me for what miles it has (this truck will take you anywhere you want to go & even made it to the shop crippled) & l think it's trying to start better/sooner...l didn't hear/notice a change for when the high pressure came on - l think you have to be in the truck for that

  • @MechanicsHubdotCom
    @MechanicsHubdotCom Před 5 lety

    Great video! The injection oil pressure needs to be around 800 psi to start. Not sure what year your diesel is in this video. Before you pull the high pressure oil manifold pull the main feed hose from the high pressure oil pump and use compressed air (usually 120 psi) to pressurize the manifold. Any leak down will show up. Just because it's a ton of work to re and re the manifold.

    Flush the oil system with ATF auto trans fluid.
    Drain Crankcase, replace filter, fill crankcase with ATF. Run the truck for about an hour. Check to see if the ATF is blackened. If so, drain crankcase, and refill with ATF run truck for an hour and inspect fluid. If fluid is clean, drain crankcase replace oil filter, & fill crankcase with 15/40 conventional oil.
    I am extremely familiar with DT,VT, Maxxforce engines
    Sounds like you have a low pressure oil system leak or pump issue or a weak IPR injector pressure regulator.

  • @PatrickBaptist
    @PatrickBaptist Před 3 lety

    Yup those DPFs are the main reason I don't buy trucks made after 2004, that garbage just doesn't make it worth owning and operating a newer truck. Dollar per mile they cost so much more.
    I love the HEUI fuel system, they make it possible to run some really dirty fuel.
    However on a hot no start situation I always start with the HPOP, *most* of the time it is the problem or maybe a oil change is all that is needed. I'd really be suspicious when it already has extended cranking time to cold start.
    I always hook a gauge to the HPO rail and check the pressure first, also disconnect the ICP sensor as well.

    Great video. I've been working on heavy equipment for years and now retired. Every once someone talks me into working on something. A friend of mine has a 4700 IH that will not start without a shot of start fluid but will start fine all day long. We had an issue with contamination of engine oil in the fuel to the point the fuel was really black. I called my injector and pump rebuilder and asked if there was some way the fuel could get into the return fuel. Yep he says O-rings on the injectors. Thought, could be the starting problem. I installed new injectors w/new O-rings. This did not fix the start problem. I am going to keep looking for the problem and will fix it cause it's got me pi$$td. Great videos. Thanks for your information.

      maybe you are losing the fuel prime and it will hold it throughout the day until it sits over night again? possibly the high pressure oil pump is bleeding down and emptying the lines and it has to crank long enough to refill the lines before it can make pressure?

  • @spectrumequipment1472

    Hello JC, Currently have an 03 Durastar doing thesame thing, do you have the part numbers for the O ring used?
    Also, did you check the O rings on injectors along the time youwere there?
    Part numbers plese if you have it.
    Thank you for the video

    On the O-rings... a man after my own heart, damn right replace them all. You've got to be nutz not to take the extra few minutes at that point in the process unless your time is worth nothing to you.

  • @JasonTheMunicipalMechanic

    I’m pretty sure you can just change the orings on the pucks. Why may I ask you wanted to change the whole thing?

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  Před 3 lety

      you can. the cost was not much different and the international dealer stocked the puck but didnt stock the o ring kits.

    Hi Guys , appreciate this video, I was wondering if anyone can shed some light on my problem....I have a Navistar....badged as perkins 1306 series here in uk , it wont start unless using easy start aerosol......it has good oil pressure in the gallery approx. 1000psi when cranking , also good fuel pressure in the rail....hand priming pump is working ,etc, checked the fuel valve in the end of the gallery , seems all good, swapped cam pos sensor , checked wiring from control panel...….ipr sol getting voltage ,etc....any ideas why it wont start? customer who owns this generator had the injectors tested before it come down here....he mentioned when he got it running it would start to slow down in speed when under half load.....the engine is 330hp at fixed 1500rpm , year of engine approx. 2012. 3500hrs. any thoughts ????

      which maxxforce engine is it? You need to get a scanner to seed the live data as your driving so you can see what is happening. what has been replaced? what have you tried so far?
