I think he meant he was surprised he got the opportunity to go to Cambridge 'but decided not to'. Because not a lot of people would turn that down as he assumed. It's like if you got A*s in everything and went to college to study Fine Art and someone says "I heard you got all A*s in school" you might take that the wrong way thinking they're assuming you wasted a great opportunity to do Fine Art when you could have been a doctor, engineer etc. He may have been worried Stormzy would see it as "You could have went to Cambridge but decided to come an artist".
Most rappers and people who grew up in rough neighbourhoods do usually not do so well in skl so it was a very justified assumption to make, no need to always be so triggered

The fact he went from unknown to the top of the scene in a year would suggest to me he is a smart guy, at least smart enough to do well at GCSE level across the board. Couple all that with African parents and the fact that 99.9 % of Rap artist exaggerate borrow or completely fabricate the content of the music is why I think that Jonathon Ross's assumption was a stupid one.

He was also kicked out of high school. My teacher taught him back then and he told us that he got kicked out for being in a gang. He and somebody else had been in gangs and sadly the other person got killed by another gang and after Stormzy saw it he decided not to be in gangs anymore and focus on his performing arts.
