- This song is about losing someone you love, put in the most positive light (no pun intended) possible. Called “New Light” ✨ It’s about my big brother Daniel, who left the world in 2010. He was only 23 and I’m now about 7 years older than he ever made it to. Don’t want to get too dramatic, but man I miss him when I think about it-he was the brother most similar to me who loved to be creative and weird and whacky. He inspired me to have an imagination that was not afraid to delve beyond the ordinary and find ways to create something new.
One quick anecdote that sort of made it into the song-this is a good illustration of how much of a weirdo he was, in a good way. One day we hopped in his car to ride home from church and it was a blistering hot summer day. I think I said something like “We gotta get the AC on full blast right away!” So what did he do? He turned the HEAT on full blast in his car as a joke and we rode the whole way home (only like 10 minutes) like that. Don’t worry, we were young and not about to get heat exhaustion or anything. But that’s actually such a good, weird memory ☺️
and I couldn’t really describe that in the song but I put a nod at it with the lines “Cruising down the highway just like we did in the heat of summer, Cruelly reminded I can’t call you up though I have your number”
Anyway, when I was writing this song I kinda saw losing Daniel as metaphorically gaining a new star in the sky and I painted that picture with the lyrics. Love you bro. See you someday. “Something tells me you’ll be alright, dancing on the clouds in your new life” ❤️✨
