When i put the truck in second gear, it skips back and fourth between "L" and second. Could the neutral safety switch be the issue? It seemed to start shortly after i opened it up and messed with it

Yes I forget exactly how but you adjust the switch and linkage to make sure it is in the selected gear.
Did trans fluid drain out when you remove line ? I have same problem with 1985
A little bit. I caught about 2 ounces while I had it apart for 2 minutes.
