- In this video i show how quickly and easily you can diy your own fly trap from recycled plastic bottles. This homemade fly trap out competes the shop bought version 10 times, the key is a bait the flys go crazy for.
This diy fly trap also has the benefit of being able to be reused multiple times unlike shop bought fly traps.

Holy crap brother, I built a bottle trap to your specifications yesterday late afternoon. Put it in some shade around my house where flies like to accumulate and a few hours later the trap was loaded with flies in the solution and in the bottle waiting to fall into the solution. I like the commenters thought about using a little tiny bit of non aromatic soap. What I mean by that is soap with no smell. Great idea. Then they don't float so well and become part of the primordial ooze of the trap. Hats off to you my brother great idea revolutionary. It would take a poultry farmer like you to come up with this brilliant idea. I had a couple of rotten eggs that were at the perfect aromatic flavor. Before I could even put the rotten eggs in the trap I was being attacked by flies that absolutely loved the smell of these rotten eggs. Mission accomplished huge success thank you for this brilliant information. I'm 65 and I learn something new everyday.
So rotten eggs and water is what you used? i'm interested.
@@dribblingdavid547same thing the video creator used
Actually any of high protein containing substances + water. They smell similar when decomposed. Except whole milk which can become too acidic to give "rotten protein smell".
If you put a little dishwashing liquid in there, once they touch the bait, they can’t fly away. 😎😎😎 Thanks for the video!!

Only dishwashing?
Floy traps. Cheekens. Bag full of floies. Love your accent. I'm gonna start talking like that. Gonna teach my cat to talk like that too.

You Sir Are A Life Saver.
Thank You From A Tennessee Small Farmer.
My bait is apple juice, sugar, and apple cider vinegar.
Will throw in broken eggs when we have them but the ones without are working great.
THANKS AGAIN!!!!!!!!
No worries 👌👌
Thank you. Was looking for alternative mix solution
thanks for this i didnt want to use eggs as it would be going on my front porch lol so i will be trying this asap
How much of each... this is great
I’m not sure how this video doesn’t have millions of views already. Thanks 🙏🏾
Because CZcamsrs can't "smell" the egg-water bait!!
Been making these for years...Truly work...For fruit flies make a smaller hole & add apple cider vinegar & mandarin oranges. They can’t resist...
You are awesome. That's exactly what I was looking for. You think Apple cider vinegar, mandarin orange peels, bananas and mineral water would work? I kill about 100 per day in my bathroom with a zapper racket.
I'll try concoction and reply later if someone posts at my post so it shows on notifications. 👍
My mum left half a lemon out on the counter last night. It was covered in fruit flies.
Who would of thought of adding them to a trap. Thanks.
I know this is an old video but I just wanted to say thank you! Your solution has worked wonders. We are plagued every year because we live behind a bin store from a small block of flats. Environmental health are involved and we’ve had more success with this than anything they’ve done or suggested! Cheers!
Glad it helped 👌😁
That bottle would have Saved Walter White and Jesse a lot of time.
Omg yes

I'm going to use your vid to set this up now, as I made a maggot trap to free feed my chickens and I think I've put it too close to the caravan (they free range at the moment) and now we're absolutely infested with house flies, thought it was the heat wave. Haven't told my partner it could be my maggot trap yet, oh the irony! Thank you, you've probably saved my life. 😆
Thank you from South Africa
Im also from South Africa,Gauteng
Hi, followed your guide, and got amazing results, I didn't have a vat of rotting eggs to hand! So got 6 eggs and half ltr of water waited 3 weeks for the mixture to "mature" and wow hundreds of fly's, thanks for the video.
Glad share and really pleased you had great success too :-)
How long do I have to wait after mixing the eggs with the water? Also can it catch mosquitoes or just flies?
@@jeimycabrera6573 I put the mixture out straight away, initially it won't catch anything until it has "matured" (around 3 weeks), I can't comment on moskitos I haven't seen any in the trap, hope this helps.
Margarita 14 won’t catch mosquitoes, sorry.
@@conradthomas6502 eggs don't take long to start smelling bad you do not need to ferment the eggs for 3 weeks but you can if you want.. Just set up the trap with some old meat meat fruit or eggs and put it out. It will get smelly on its own xD
Hey just a quick tip. Don't make holes on the top. Make the holes a third from the bottom. Use clear one gallon jag. If you do it my way flies will not be able to escape back out. Because once they get in they have instinct to fly upwards so make holes inch or so above waterline. Also do not use tab water because it contains chlorine and it will take a lot longer to start the decomposition process of bait. Used natural spring water for faster results.
Holes are slightly down from the top for this reason. If u out them further down when it fills up with dead ones eventually they can just crawl out 👌
@@FieldtoFarm_UK good point
Most farms do not have chlorine in their water. They have water wells that are not cityfied! :)
Or beer, tuna juice etc...
And the store bought bait says use warm to hot water. And, most importantly, it takes 24 hours before their bait begins to activate. His bait had been brewing for a week. That's not a competition
Love to see that week old bait in the store and homemade trap. Your old bait vs. the store bait that's just made and takes 24 hrs to begin being effective just like your's is no competition. No matter the traps
Simple and efficient. Brilliant. Thanks for sharing
I did the bottle trap 2 days ago, right now there's about 50 flies and a massive slug in it. As bait I used an egg and some wet cat food, they go nuts for that.
Ok......... This seems to be the mixture of success.
They do love the cat food!?
@@mrstoner2udude799 it stinks?
Thank you for the advice.. plan on making a few of these now
Have fun!
Omg I found this just in time!! I was ready for the Looney bin trying to deal with these flies!! Ty sooo much!!
Mate, thank you for this. I'm dishomed and the flies are misery. The best bait I've done so far is vinegar and egg shells. It makes CO2 which they're attracted to. I'm not sure if there's more to it than just the CO2 but it works swimmingly!
It makes SO2 & H2S. Sulfur dioxide & hydrogen sulfate. Rotten egg stink.
Finally one that works! Thank you so much✨
Is there other liquids other than that one ro use?
@@sw4rmer720 beer works ok
big companies not getting my money😂😂😂
The flies really just liked your egg mix better than the pre packed one. Nice tip with the eggs they obviously liked that one a lot! 👍🏻
It takes a couple of days for the bait to activate on the red top traps
I'm keen to try this, but I thought that leaving out the fact that the instructions stress that it takes at least a day for the bait to become effective, when his eggs had had a week to fester was extremely misleading
Excellent video...I just picked up some store bought traps before I seen your video. Looked at the ingredients: powdered egg soilds. Lol good work
Flies love rotten eggs, perfect!
Great homemade fly bait attractant solution
Eggs are so expensive now, is there a substitute? 🤔
i put two eggs + some water into a plastic bottle with an x cut as you suggested. A few weeks later it's completely filled with flies. Thanks!
Glad to help 👍
I'd love to try this for inside my shop but an concerned with the smell of the spoiled eggs.... Thoughts?
Rick search home made fly strips. Or get a zapper.
This worked incredibly, GREAT IDEA MAN.
Thank you for this easy to follow and effective information
Great vid. Will make one later today. Also your method is a lot easier and cleaner, than cutting the bottle up completely.
Thanks
I thought so as well
Brilliant video. I'm going to make several of these traps this coming summer here in Australia we get a thousand of the little bastards thru drive me nuts! Genuis trap
For fruit flies set a teaspoon of plum or raspberry jam in warm water as the bait . It's 10-20 times better than the bait bought from Bunnings . I use Bunnings traps with jam bait with great success .
Ill for sure be using this next summer. Thanks!
Wow great idea! Love that it’s recycling and you just saved us money!
Reuse in even better than recycling!

Thank you for your dyi fly trap i will surely try it out. Cheers
Thank you for this! (It also confirmed my design idea is valid as a basic DIY trap)
So here's the thing: the fly trap bait is basically yeast and sugar, once you hydrate it, the fermentation process begins but takes a few days to really get stinking, that's why his home-made bait out-performed his already-stinking bait. So yes, you can make an effective solution with vinegar, sugar and some water....they also say to add a bit of dish soap (not sure why). If you really want to kick it up, add some yeast or whatever else stinks or is rotting. Think about it, flies mostly land on fecal matter so there ya go
U need to watch the second vid I did on diy fly traps, it goes into more detail on y it defo works better with rotten egg than even fecies
@@FieldtoFarm_UK But the point being made here is that it was hardly a fair comparison. You compared a brand new solution that was given 23 hours to ferment vs. a homemade solution that had fermenting for days. It’s obvious that the bait that was been fermenting for longer is going to attract more flies.
Light enough flies can stand on water in a jar due to the surface tension. Add a little soap and the surface tension is gone. So the fly will sink into the water instead.
So they die faster, there is muct less chance they can find their way out.
that is a fair point. at the start of the video i was expecting that both would achieve similar results. your comment goes a long way the explain why the homemade one was so effective. i remember making a few wasp traps years ago using a large tin, some jam and water with dishwasher drying agent. it sort of backfired though. yes i caught lots of wasps but that was because i was attracting so many
Dish soap in water breaks the water surface tension. So lightweight bugs such as flies, mosquitos, fleas, wasps, etc cannot sit on top of water but instead sink right in and drown.
Thanks! From California! I ah e bought traps from feed store but I would rather reuse and save some cash. Thanks again🙏
Almost free this way
Iron Brew!!!!!, haven’t had Iron Brew since I was in Scotland. Man, wish we had it in the states! Great vid man!
So good
That's a great idea.
However, I don't think the smell of eggs sitting in water rotting and percolating all day under a hot sun is something I want in my kitchen.
Call me crazy 😜
the hot sun all day to go rotten and percolate
The store bought bait smells equally atrocious
is it water added egg?
I heard we can replace them with apple vinegar.
Well make 4 traps and hang them in the corners of your garden . Attract the flies away from your living quarters.
Hey man I appreciate your videos I like your depth and I really like your overall understanding and your way of keeping it simple
Thanks chief 👌😁
I put one egg, 1/2 cup water with a few tablespoons of some rancid bacon grease and a few pieces of dry dog food, mixed together spread over 4 traps, didn't even wait for eggs to start stinking, they love it, and so do I...
Shop bought bait is basically dog biscuit and egg powder and beef fat
Hey Great Video!! Thanks I'm trying it !!
@3:00 it was a bad idea to watch this right after eating. LOL 😂
You Sr. Are a genius 👌
Genius! Thanks mate!
Tuna also works very well after a couple of days those bottles will be full
You are truly amazing!!!!!!, Thanks you Problem solved!!!! 💯💯
Thanks for the video, am goin to try this now.
Have fun!
This bait is also great for spray flowers to keep deer off. I am going to try putting a cracked egg and water directly into a bottle and put it in the sun and see how it works because I can’t tolerate having a whole thing brewing like that on my property
How did that work out?
Fantastic video, can't stand buying fly traps for so much money! Making several today: black fly season in America is in full bloom right now
Sounds like Korg from 'Thor: Ragnarok.' I love it!
Another day, Another Doug!!
Korg’s accent is a Polynesian accent Taika used it for a bit of a kiwi in joke :)
Ingenius! Going to try this in the cow barn. Thanks for posting ;)
overwhelming success man! I needed this today. I tried chickens, but just can't do them. I am raising Tilapia fish. Someday I'll trade my fish for some ones chickens someday. either way I have problems with flies due to owning pets, and being here and probably forgetting to take the trash all the way to the curb or a day or two late. thanks mate!
Flies love rotten fish too
Something you said before ending , feeding the Flys to chickens I'd think another positive is your bait is organic no poisonous chemical so safe for flies to eat. Thanks for the information. I'm making some right now . A lot of flies because of dogs However I'm researching becauee I plan on doing backyard chickens and maybe a couple Nigerian dwarf goats , small homestead. Everybody talks about flies I've planted some insect repellent plants to put by the coop when I'm ready hopefully these will all work well
Works great! Thanks!
Great ideas!, I must ask ,who are the people that thumbs-down great videos like this?! I have seen thumbs-down to adorable baby animal videos! Do some people just do that automatically without even watching the video?🧐
Awesome job very informative
I live in the mountains of South America and I don't have any screens in this particular house and I've lived in one's with screens and they still managed to get in a little but here I must hurry up and eat breakfast early and then I have to open up because it gets too warm. I already used banana peels and other fruit and vegetable pieces in the bottom of a clear or regular yogurt plastic cup with little holes in the top of the lid to catch the fruit flies and it does a great job. Now I gave you a thumbs up and I like your idea but I am concerned about the odor in my house so I'll be careful with how much solution and try a little liquid soap detergent which should help the smell but I will sacrifice because I can't kill them fast enough and I'm very quick. I can even take my time for fun and sneak up behind them with my hand on a table swipe real fast and I have them in my hand haha then I shake my hand and throw them against the wall. But that's just a tradition since grade school and helps keep my speed at 69 I'm still pretty quick because I'm a triathlete but again thanks great idea and I'm so poor my chickens are leaning against the fence haha but I'm rich because I have peace and the Creator in my heart and I've been reading his word for 40 years but I don't play with churches, only help young men get off of drugs and teach them things out of the Bible so consider your idea a donation to the ministry haha as I will have meetings in my house and young men will be getting off of drugs as I had an in-house program in the US until 12 or 15 years ago when I moved to South America permanently and you would have to shoot me in the head to get me back to the US as I'm in a pretty good country with many independent Banks;-) w i n k and I think we won't take too bad of a hit when things come tumbling down, we'll still take a hit but this is a rich country second only after Venezuela that the bankers messed up but not here as the independent Banks stop the world bankers from Gaining control here, thank God but we won't be dismissed from having some problems you can believe that as we see the world getting worse everyday. Trust your creator surrender to him and God bless you all and your families
Thank you, I got chickens & I got used eggs. Good as done.
Thank you so very much that looks wonderful and easy to make, I plan to make some myself
Holly crap, you have my vote and a BIG thumbs up thank you for your time friend!

I also used Beet Peels in my Bug Light and caught at least a hundred thousand mosquitoes last season, this season despite all of the rains and the fact that I live next to a wash with standing water, there's still almost no mosquitoes, so I apparently did major damage to the population.
You mean - i can cut up some beet root and stuff it into one of these DIY traps, and mosquitoes will get busy trapping themselves? I tried yeast and what not to no avail. Beet peels, huh. Gotta remember for the next summer. Should those be boiled, would you say?
4 invite
You used beets peels for mosquitoe trap.
I just found this channel, tited of dealing with flies, mosquitoes and ants.
Please enlighten me, how did you make your trap?
@@ipeklofijs Beets contain a chemical compound that is found in the soil called "Geosmin" its used by researchers to trap mosquitos.
@@alicel3992 Beets contain a chemical called Geosmin that is used to trap mosquitos for research, it also gives beets their earthy flavor, you can peel some beets and put them in your zapper to lure mosquitos and then get a black bucket it has to be black or paint a white bucket black and then fill it with water mixed with dish soap, Dawn works the best because you can use the water on your plants later, but the soap breaks up the surface tension of the water and the mosquito larvae cant get out when they mature and they die in the bucket eliminating the cycle and most of the adults make their way into the bug zapper and the cycle is done, no more mosquitos in your general area.
@@ipeklofijs The beet peels have to be fresh, I think boiling it would destroy the Geosmin, but you could blend up a bunch of beets and that would probably work even better.
