- We are so proud of this group of filmmakers, who were the inaugural members of our shorts program, LENS (Leading and Empowering New Storytellers). Jarelle Dampier (Director), Khaila Amazan (Writer), Clara Chan (VFX Supervisor), and Joe Darko (Animation Supervisor) came together with Michelle Raimo-Kouyate and David Schulenburg (Producers, LENS Program Mentors) to create The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story. Sony Pictures Animation has teamed up with the Kevin Love Fund to digitally release the animated short film, The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story, that will be incorporated into the Kevin Love Fund’s new mental health focused lesson plan, “The Hero Within.” The lesson plan invites students to tell their own story through the lens of mental health awareness via an interactive curriculum including a creative storyboard activity. In the genre-bending thriller The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story, Miles Morales struggles to balance his responsibilities as a teenager, friend, and student while acting as Brooklyn’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. After a particularly challenging day living with these pressures, Miles experiences a panic attack that forces him to confront the manifestations of his anxiety and learn that reaching out for help can be just as brave an act as protecting his city from evil.
The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story was developed and produced in the inaugural year of Sony Pictures Animation (SPA) and Sony Pictures Imageworks’ (SPI) Leading and Empowering New Storytellers (LENS) program, a 9-month leadership training program that provides candidates from underrepresented groups with an opportunity to gain valuable leadership experience in animation. The final deliverable of the program is an all-original short film, set in the existing world of a feature produced by SPA and SPI.
The LENS program is backed by Sony Pictures Entertainment’s global, multi-pronged racial equity and inclusion strategy, Sony Pictures Action. The program’s goal is to provide creatives who have traditionally lacked access to leadership roles with a first-hand opportunity to deepen their understanding of every element of the animated filmmaking process including production design, animation, visual effects, lighting, sound, and various post-production processes. Through the program, participants strengthen their ability to effectively articulate their film’s creative vision and collaborate across a variety of disciplines.
The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story is directed by Jarelle Dampier and written by Khaila Amazan, and produced by LENS program creators Michelle Raimo-Kouyate and David Schulenburg. Rounding out the inaugural LENS team are Clara Chan who served as VFX supervisor and Joe Darko who served as animation supervisor.

The fact that this short film was almost never released to the public. It would've been so unfair to all the talented up and coming artist who worked on the film. So glad it was released, and we can all experience this great story they wanted to ell.

Ngl I stood hysterically stunned throughout the short film and I had never even imagined a studio this big, giving such huge opportunities to some of the most talented upcoming filmmakers, artists, directors and what not!! Can't wait for the upcoming projects and obviously BEYOND THE SPIDER VERSE!!!

Dude, this is so transparent and human, I love this short and hearing about how it was made, this came out at a perfect time for me personally as I am having a lot of anxiety as of late, and having a short film about one of my favorite characters dealing with similar issues is so awesome to see. Thanks to everyone who worked on this!

Right now is the perfect time. The field needs animators , there is lots of work.
They killed it with the visuals. It was actually kinda scary at points. And that first bedroom scene reminded me of having sleep paralysis when I was at college. Very relatable!
It was like watching a horror movie, I loved it.

My expectation for spider- man 3 is now in space
Out of all superheroes with secret identities. I've always thought that Miles was one of the few who should have come clean early on. 90% of his problems are the result of trying to keep the secret from his parents who would be 100% supportive of him if they found out (after the initial shock obviously). No clue why Miles doesn't get that given he always has a great relationship with his parents otherwise.
You guys need to do more work on animated spiderverse
And give a new face to miles and some other characters also .

I really wish and hope that Beyond The Spider-Verse is at least 3hrs long and probably gets a PG-13 rating maybe if they want to, making it the film Sony Pictures Animation film to get a PG-13 rating, and a longer run-time.
I really hope we get to see some live-action sequences with Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, Tom Holland, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jon Favreau, Jacob Batalon, Zendaya, Emma Stone, Bryce Dallas Howard, Kristen Dunst, Benedict Cumberbatch, Marisa Tomei, Sally Field, Rosemary Harris, Thomas Haden Church, Rhy Ifans, Jamie Foxx, Alfred Molina, Willem Defoe, and especially Nicholas Cage as Spider-Man Noir (I also hope he returns to reprise the role in a live-action series of Spider-Man Noir as a live-action verison)
I also heard that Hailee Steinfield wants to return as a live-action verison of Spider-Gwen. If it does happen, I also hope Emma Stone and Bryce Dallas Howard returns as Gwen, but as Spider-Gwen in a different universe. (Yes, I know she’s playing Kate Bishop in the MCU)
I also hope Miles Brown play a live-action Miles Morales with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man as his mentor, and I think that Caleb McLaughlin should play a live-action Spider-Punk with Daniel Kaluuya as Spider-Punk and Shameik Moore as Miles Morales in a different universe.
