10 years: Roland FANTOM FA06 compared to the FANTOM X6

- How the mighty have ...stayed mighty. The Fantom series has continued to impress for about two decades. In this video we check out some of the differences moreover the underlying similarities between the FA06 (2019) and the X6 (2004).

Good comparison. I think the workstations of the mid-2000s marked a plateau in the maturity and quality of sounds that hasn't been much improved upon since. Nor is there a need for improvement. More gigabytes of ROM/RAM/SSD doesn't necessarily mean a better sound - it's all about the sound designer's ability to make best use of the features available to make a great sound.

I think improvements continued to include resonance modeling. I would put a 2021 Yamaha YC-88 up against anything from 2005. People didn't magically get dumb after 2005 and forgot how to engineer a keyboard. Articulations and expressions have improved markedly over what was available in 2005.
The samples did get better also with higher resolution and clarity. The PCM files are higher capacity because storage gets greater capacity every 6 months. The PCMs in the ROM are also recorded with better equipment with more microphones like room mics and sub mics. Dynamics are better so the PCM doesn't need to be stuff at 44.1khz sampling rate. Now things can be a higher bit depth allowing larger headroom to fit all the parts in the composition space to breath. The D/A converters are better so the PCMs can be amplified after a clearer conversion. All the companies now are using a variety of digital synthesis to Mimmick the real properties of an instrument and don't use PCM at all. They make the instrument more lifelike because old keyboards are stuck to key pitch attack release modulation and velocity. Now that MPE is are, the synthesis is more realistic. The sounds can articulate more freely and played like that instrument without using sampling. You can now add vibrato. I think it's called AWM (Advanced wave memory) by Yamaha. It's a combination of FM and physical modeling. Each manufacturer has a different method and do similar concepts of waverform synthesis.

Fantom X Hands down winner...it even does more than the FA...even more than the new fantoms

FA 06 has a velocity issue on black keys, Fa07 fixes the velocity issue and has a fatar keybed, but fails in the way many midrange keyboards do these days. the black keys are hinged poorly and pale in comparison to fantom, MOTIF, or even older yamaha boards lie DX7, SY77, korg trinity, triton, black key actions . keybeds ..... what a rabbit hole. they ALL sound good but entry level and midrange boards these days cheap out so bad on keybeds! its the heart of the instrument. PS picking up fantom X7 this week im jazzed! love your vids :)
heck even laying hands on kronos 2 61 the black keys require to much pressure on the back side! motif and fantom , montage, and the like did it right ! take notes. also NORD understands this electros, stage , and wave have organ keybeds from fatar. those DO have friendly black keys that dont hinder playing in the sharp keys and a re a joy to play.

Fantom X needs SRX boards to become compatible with the top tiers. However, FA-06 already has those top sounds under its hood from the factory, not to mention about axial site support.
Fantom X is still a great gear, but FA-06 is another story now.
I might prefer Fantom X due to its aftertouch embedded action, that's all.
I have FA-07 and its keybed even better than FA-06. Highly recommended :)

The FA does not have ALL SRX boards under the hood...once an X is fully loaded an FA just can't compare

Hello Iam from Portugal. I have both boards. Many of people think thats no much diference or something else like I read below. But keep always in mind thad althought fa06 has more modern samples in kind of behaviour of waveform, example the supernatural, the "quality" in terms of sound of clarity, deep, envolving, the fantom x its another championship. Try to play in a big band, with other people, the pianos on fa06 dissapear... the board does not have "punch" on PA. Its completely different. The potential of any board does not measure only in studio with phones, in real situation, live concerts, etc. The toplevel of brands, the samples are always best quality, (not confund with modern samples), more punch, best keybed (fa06 keybed sucks). Remember , i have both, love grand supernatural pianos on fa 06, synth sounds, but the final sound on PA system the sound of fa dissapear. Ihad to give gain on editing.... but its not the same. Fantomx, another championship.

I‘m not sure but I think the FA 06 isn‘t marketed as a „Fantom“... The successors of the X6 are the new Fantom 6, 7 and 8. Nice video !!

@@CDK11 I sold my X7 for a G in 2017....just bought an X7 last week as the pianos IMHO are stronger in the X....I love both (still have the G6 and keeping both).
I think fa06 sounds more like something you can get out of plugins it’s seems cleaner and more hd . And I mean it not in good way . X6 sounds more unique and ads a bit of its own flavour and would complement any producer with tons of plugins way better then fa06 . IMHO

Roland Fantom always fits the bill 😆 but unfortunately no Aftertouch in the FA models doesn't have after touch... Didn't get the Greenlight 🚦 from me and that plastic housing Ewww , but it can be really neat Aux/gigging Board like the feature of the FA06 that you can add all the supernatural sounds and SRX expansions ...both are Great 🎹 keyboards But I'll pick X6 workstation over this Fa ANY DAY!!!!

I used to have the x6 a couple years back, and IMO it lacked good lead synths bad. I just got the fa 6 and man I am impressed. The integra sound packs on axial are simply amazing. Fa has better sounds definitely.

The FA series is a budget version of the Fantom series. Therefore the Fantom has better sound quality and sounds much bigger than the FA.
As far as I understood FA only lacks somewhat in build quality, lack of aftertouch (some people hold it important), keys quality, and full sampler. However, when it comes to sound quality (and quantity), FA beats even Fantom G. FA has one big advantage over X model in this that it has 16 insert effects, while X sam only 3.

The FA-06 is a cheap ripoff. I would buy the X7 and two good SRX cards or an Integra 7 with it. Roland is a shadow of its former self. All products are now fucked up in serious ways.
I recently got another X6 cheap because of two faulty knobs on it (no big deal). I'm thinking I might really learn it properly this time, but that's a big commitment... :)
