  • If you had to guess, how much of your life is determined by the color of your skin, your heritage, or your cultural background? Francys Johnson explores the evolution of race relations in America and particularly the south. He challenges us to debunk the fiction that is race and to understand that people matter more.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

for everyone complaining about it being contradictory the first racism he is reffering to is our association of ethnicity as race ie. brown is hispanic latino south american central american etc. white is european, scandanavian, baltic, eastern european, etc. You get the idea. hes reffering to it as race not ethnicity because its what we identify with commonly instead of trying to be politically correct and use the term ethnicity and risk confusing people. At least thats what i read into it and it sounds like he definitly understood what hes talking about

Thank you for the talk. While racism is obviously a stain on human culture that won’t wash out, to deny the existence of race is to deny reality. I think we can make so much more progress when we recognize truth without injecting our bias. While all races do have a common ancestor, that ancestor likely (with as much knowledge we have today) existed about 400,000 years ago. From that time on, humanoids migrated to various places across the earth without intermingling afterwards. We can tell someone’s race by their appearance, bone structure, DNA, and so much more. And this even helps us discover who is more susceptible to illness, etc.
So while the belief in racial superiority is bad, we still need to acknowledge that we can clearly see with our eyes that race exists. We should remain vigilant of people who might use the knowledge of race and eugenics to take advantage of others and maintain a higher code of ethics and morals.
    God bless brother.

You need to differentiate what exists really but exists only in our minds and not in reality ( religion, race, superstitions, etc.) from what exists in reality (our actions and what we do). So, if I belief you are a witch-woman, it is a fiction because a witch in reality does not exist. But if I kill you (from thinking of you being dangerous due to my perception of you as a witch), that becomes part of reality. Killing is real, discrimination is real - those are all actions that take place in reality. But what ridiculous and unreal thoughts go on in our heads is really nothing but imagination. The most important thing to do is not let our imagination lead to actual violence and killing. Imagination, even if negative, should be left within the realm of 'freedom of thought' but never let go outside of our minds to the means of violence or other physical harm.

The human race is what matters, and this is HIS concern; can we live in harmony with one another and work together to make a community that is focused on one thing, LOVE. The only way this will happen is that we follow the Master of Love, Jesus. We have to see things from His perspective, because the human race was made by Him and for Him, so the way to get the answers to racism is to get to know the architect of the human race which created us out of his Love.

The thing is, there is no basis to claim that the social construction of "race" creates any of the differences that are the basis for the prejudice. It is much like the famous Blue Eye Brown Eye experiments. There is no real difference between those with blue eyes and those with brown eyes. Still, immense prejudices developed. The prejudice exists without any basis. Both are true - racism exists without any biological basis for the concept of race. There is no contradiction.

Religion is a social construct (fiction that exists in people's minds but not in reality). Yes, indeed religion is fiction. But religious intolerance is not fiction. Gender is fiction, but genderism is not. To summarise, our beleifs and ideas are all fiction, but our actions (arising out of those ideas and beleifs) are not fiction.

I think a better word to use would be "abstract" rather than "fiction." Ideas and ideologies may not be physical things that occupy time and space that can be acted upon, but that does not make them any less real than physical objects.

It takes this man five minutes of recap before he even states his point and then two minutes later he concludes that any and all differences between arbitrarily decided groups can be explained through racism. He then goes on to make the often parroted argument from statistics claiming that the race of his children affect them because people that look like them are in poor situations. He then repeats his faulty argument that because all races are essentially the same any differences in outcome can be attributed to racism. He makes logically fallacious arguments (genetic fallacy) from statistics for a second time while theorizing about his children’s future opportunity. He then concludes from his theorizing that racism is incentivized financially and politically and is socially maintained. He makes this statement without sound evidence, or any evidence that he didn’t presuppose, and expects to be taken seriously in our world where the mere suggestion of racism is a cause for public outcry or even rioting. He then talks about how the NAACP is a bastion for racial equality and common sense while ignoring the fact that it exists for the sole purpose of promoting all races except one. He then talks about a project in which Black students helped illegal aliens learn their native languages respectively and then proclaims the beauty of how people are coming together while skimming over the apparent exclusion of all Non-Blacks and then comparing all their progress to that of White people. This would indicate either that he uses White people as a default or a standard (which I doubt) or that he is measuring the progress of the project by how much they could outdo White people both of these scenarios are racist and he should know that fully.
He conflates the terms predominant with supreme making simple demographic marketing into that of “privilege”. White Privilege no less, not that the race specifics really matter because the concept is based on the genetic fallacy that because a group has a feature in common that they must share others.
He goes on to talk about struggle and progress despite the fact that he is struggling like a fish trying to climb a ladder; it makes no sense, helps noone and ultimately he looks ridiculous.

He only gets to speak for 15 minutes. You can't always give sound evidence in a 15 minute speech. The white race has no need for the NAACP, because the white race is the race doing all the battering of the darker races. He did not skim over and he is not trying to outdo white people. He did not once say the word genetic nor did he allude to any generic trait. And are not all men and women who have ambition struggling like a fish to climb a ladder to better themselves? Does not matter what color your skin is. You look and sound ridiculous with your comint. And now we all know who the true racists is. It's you.

Eros Delorenzi ? That has nothing to do with race as a biological concept. Phenotypes are 0.001 percent of the entire human genome. It’s a physiological concept not a biological one. All humans share 99.9 percent of our dna with eachother, that 0.01 percent is shared genealogy due to geological isolation. Not a biological one. You should probably crack open a biology book

@@jubilantsleep Of course race is real, there are genetic differences between the races which is why African people are more susceptible to sickle cell anemia and Tay-Sachs disease is more likely to occur among people of Ashkenazi (eastern and central European) Jewish or French. But let me guess, you only start bringing science into it when it agrees with your own opinions and beliefs.

Nobody is the same, that doesn't make everyone his own "race". Skin Color, eye shape and lip shape are all on a spectrum and can independently vary between people without any sharp line inbetween.

False. It's a social construct to put humans into boxes, based on differences in some physical characteristics that are one a gradient.
