I am not sotp, but I am a top3 player also, and, belive it or not, the act of shooting at the floor when theres a crapload of enemies everywhere is actually doing the opposite of what you're suggesting. At some point you just can't run around in the stretch any longer so you find two thorns, "hug" them, stare down and hold left click, which abuses the avoid mechanic of enemies creating sort of a forcefield around you that keeps enemies away. This extends the run by like 5-20 seconds, it depends on your luck really. This run could've been a 1270 instead of 1254 had he gotten lucky enough with the strat. Everyone at the top does it, it's a cheap way to get your run to go longer
Note that this only really works when pushing for high 1200+ scores, doing it below that isn't as beneficial cause the spawn rate is considerably slower, thus you have less enemies. More enemies the better the strat is, it doesn't make sense but that's how it works.
