      Mark Aguglia great to hear from you. You can put grass seed down early. I prefer February for my climate. Allows mother nature to do the germinating naturally as the soil temperatures come up.

    • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  Před 6 lety +1

      Mark Aguglia I feel that mother nature has been doing it that way for a while ;) if we were in June and receive a freeze mid germination you will have some die back. If you overseed in December you will also see up to 30%die back. I don't feel it's as big of a deal as people make it. I feel most people don't keep the seed damp enough.

      @pestandlawnginja  Před 6 lety

      Great idea. Crushed limestone is a great calcium source. The local vendors here in Utah don't sell it and that's why I recommend a gypsum / humate based product. Thanks for the comment. It'll help a lot of people out who don't have access to gypsum.

    Thanks for the vid! I really need a preventative. Have a 100lb lab and the grass death is bad especially after winter. I already use revive and richlawn (more N) which are both DPW. I also apply granular humic 2x a year. Can I just apply gypsum every 2 months? I can't find a all-in-one product local yet like you have. Revive has the dog spot treatment but not a preventative.

    • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  Před 6 lety

      You could apply gypsum every 2 weeks. IMO gypsum and humates work best together to prevent dog urine spots. The gypsum helps hold the clay open and the humates help push down and break up sediment. You can't over apply gypsum or humates. They are cost effective and cheap to use. Its really difficult to prevent dog urine spots over winter because there generally isn't growth or water to move things downward. There will be some spring work involved but I find if I use these products throughout the winter the repair is much quicker than if I didn't use them.

      Thanks for reaching out. It will depend on of you have warm season or cool season grass.
      If you have cool season grass I would make sure you have a hardy turf type grass. I really like the barbet bluegrass mixture from barenbrug. They sell a bag call turf magic hgt.
      Calcium and humates will be your friend. You may need to include them every 4 weeks in sandy soils.

    Well, I finally got all the products you suggested, my urine stained area is the size of a basketball...court. Can you recommend raking the area with a thatch rake? Then use the "mix" before putting down the seeds and top soil? Or wait a week or two before seeding after the Chicken poop/Humic acid/ Gypsum mix. Also we are still dealing with 25-30 degree nights yet with only 35-50 degree highs during the day. Two days ago 4-8-22 we had an inch of snow so it will be a couple of weeks yet before new grass will even start to grow here. Your video's are great, thanks for the help.. Now if I can find a way to prevent the urine damage in the first place during the winter months short of a litter box for our 120 pound Lab/German short hair mix I would love it. Nightly temps in the winter can be from -50 to 30 and day time temps from -20 to 50.... Snow coverage any where from 3 to 15 inches is average..It would be great if I could stay ahead of the spots.. Thanks

    please explain the lawn pull test

    • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  Před 6 lety

      Hi Kent. The "pull test" is a simple way to measure weather or not the grass has potential turf insect problems. Turf insects can be a primary or secondary problem. Grabbing and tugging on the grass will us if a potential turf insect is present. If the lawn doesn't pull out when performing a pull test then we don't need to worry about applying an insecticide as a curative measure. If the grass pull out we want to find out if the roots are present or not. If the roots are not present we are typically dealing with a turf insect that eats roots. If the roots are present and not coming out we are generally dealing with a sod web worm (in my local region) or cut worms. The insecticides needed for both these types of turf insects are different. Hope that helps clear things up.

    If I am overseeding the entire lawn while fixing 15-20 urine spots, should I apply Revive at the same time or a starter fertilizer instead and the Revive later on?

    • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  Před 4 lety +1

      I would wait 5 days after the revive goes down before applying the seed. revive is a chicken poop product and is fairly acidic and flashes the ground with nitrogen.

    • @AP-ju5iu

      Pest and Lawn Ginja I already seeded so I guess I’ll wait 3-4 weeks before going with the Revive

    I came across your video on urine spots on the lawn. I am wondering if compost tea can be used as an alternative to the humanate?

    • @pestandlawnginja

      Compost tea would be a replacement for the humates but I'm unsure of it would have the exact same affect. I've never tried it

    Barenburg is marketing here; a rhizomatous tall fescue as a salt resistant dog spot repair seed prepackaged with coconut coir for the mulch and some sort of fertilizer.

      @pestandlawnginja  Před 6 lety +1

      Thanks for the comment. Good people at Barenbrug. I'm going to test the tall fescue out in a few months. Looking forward to it. I've had good luck so far with Barenbrug grass seed. I haven't had enough use with the tall fescue to say weather or not it is dog urine resistant. I'm looking forward to trying it out!

    Is the lime or gypsum bad for the dog - he will sniff and eat anything new in the yard and too many spots to fence off - same with the other fertilizer chems are they harmful, - is there an organic option (yes I know gypsum and limestone are) I can see limestone causing problems if inhaled?

    GINJA!! Where have you been all my life! Surfing for a remedy of my sandy soil here in sandy utah. I saw your video and thought those mountains look familiar! You must be in Utah! I love your chanel and this video! I have a question for you- I am re landscaping my backyard and limiting the new grass I am planting. i have a dog- medium sized bird dog- German shorthair pointer. I want to have a thicker more hardier grass type that I can manage the urine spots. Also- a thick hearty grass that can hold up to her energy. Any suggestions for grass type that would grow well in the UT climate- I live in Sandy UT by little cottonwood canyon. the grass area is in backyard, not a lot of shade. Hope to hear from you. thanks for the time!

      awesome erik. rtf by barenbrug is probably your best bet. its a thick blade grass that has repairing properties to it. the roots also are very deep which will help with the urine spot. it won't be 100% but it'll be better all around than the bluegrass you have. just keep in mind its not as inviting on the feet but it has great color and appearance.

    Ginga! Thanks for all your videos. I’ve learned a lot from them. In the spirit of sharing I have a recipe for a top dress that I use on urine burns. I’ve been using it for almost two years now. Our mowers keep buckets of it in their trailers and fix spots on their top end customers. I call it “spot whizard.” PM me and I’ll share the recipe with you.

    Ginja, would gypsum & Green County Fert Humic Acid work just as well? Gypsum is cheap near me & I already have the Humic.
    Thanks.

      Gypsum is for ph above 6.5. Both of those go down well. Sometimes they're not compatible to tank spray together. Youd have to test it out
