It doesnt really fail children, it has red tape and cannot do anything without enough evidence. I used to get spanked by my parents when I did something wrong, and at the time as a dumb kid I hated them for it. But looking back on it I turned into a well adjusted adult and rarely make big mistakes that I see most zoomers making. If I had the chance I probably wouldve cried to CPS and had they taken me away from my family I always would have regretted it. So it's a good thing CPS does not have the power to simply break up families because the kid asked them to. And it's incredibly ignorant to blame them for this situation.

    • @CloudyOrchards
      @CloudyOrchards Před 8 měsíci +107

@ciscornBIG My mother was a foster kid, she was lucky, my nana was an amazing woman and foster mom. Sounds like shes one of the few. There are... Horrible, horrible stories from so many foster kids, and CPS fails them time and time again. It's genuinely so horrific, and it's not changing. Its not quite a foster situation but a kid my younger brother knows took refuge at my parents place a while, but kept getting sent back to her very abusive(documented, she's got multiple assaults on file) grandma because CPS would rather "keep her in the family." And "not cause unnecessary trauma", cause y'know beaten little girls running half naked to a neighbors home at 2AM is clearly just a "misunderstanding" and "different generation" problem

The "how did cps not listen to the actual victim" line was just... They don't, ever, listen to the actual victims unless someone dies. I reported my own stepfather to cps, and I was terrified that they'd mishandle the case like they had with so many others (I'd seen what happened to one of my friends when cps told her abuser to his face who reported him, and I still called them, I was that desperate), but they didn't, because they never even picked it up. I never reached out for help again, and I still have issues trusting reporting agencies.

CPS services were involved in my life for a majority of my childhood, and I can confidently say that CPS and DCFS are completely useless more than 90% of the time in Utah. The abuse has to be blatant, the conditions for the children have to be deplorable for them to even act, and even then they are lacking. We told them that we didn’t feel safe, that my mother would stay in bed for days or weeks at a time and leave me and my 5 year old sister to fend for ourselves, expecting a 7 year old boy to prepare dinner and take care of everything. When CPS would be involved, we told them we had no food and she wouldn’t feed us. Yet CPS fell for every lie and trick that my mother could come up with. They are incredibly unsympathetic to the child and will almost always believe the parent/legal guardian. All my mother has to do was maintain appearances when CPS would get involved and they would fall for it. Every. Single. Time.

I feel the main reason nobody did anything for so long is because MANY MANY adults with kids who hate them have a 1950’s mindset where they UNIRONICALLY think emotional availability, food, and care will raise “a soft generation.” Realistically, Kevin probably took some sort of plea deal with heavy restrictions surrounding his children and the internet, since people would really prefer that kids don’t have both of their parents arrested. Since it was implied that the mom was the executor of most of the abuse, she’s probably the one people want arrested the most. The dad is just as wrong for letting it happen, but it gets really nuanced and complicated from here.

I lived in a household with an emotionally and mentally abusive step parent, who made it clear that she loathed my very existence (as did most of her family). Living in that house was fucking hell and I was basically the glorified maid and babysitter, who couldn’t do a damn thing right and would get screamed at for it, and everything had to be done perfectly. Then she would take all the credit for the things I would do, while telling everyone what an ungrateful, lazy, antisocial asshole I was, when I just wanted to make myself as small as possible and get away from all the bullshit. But trying to avoid the source of the problem apparent makes one a “hermit” and warrants more instigation. There were also a few nights I had “food privileges” revoked, because I pissed her off. (I was the scapegoat in a narcissistic family unit and my half sister was the golden child… for those who know, you know…)
CPS got called a few times… but it was on my half siblings. Someone called in saying they were getting beat because they had bruises, when the reality was they would just beat the shit out of each other or jump off of the couch/out of trees and shit (because no one was watching them most of the time- something I’d get screeched at for, when my step mom slept all day) and CPS didn’t even acknowledge my existence, any of the times they were called out. In therapy sessions, she would sit in with me and pretend to be my best friend. Like, of course I’m not going to say, “this bitch has been doing some abusive shit”, while she’s in the room, but I didn’t even really register what was going on, either, back then, and that it was wrong, because it had become so normalized for me. It took me being out of the situation for about 10 years to realize something had been wrong. And when I came forward to family members about it, the biggest slap in the goddamn face was, exactly like in this case, them knowing (or suspecting) something was going on and doing nothing about it… And I get that there’s nothing to be done, now, but most just treat it like, “whoopsie poopsie. Our bad! Be like jesus and just forgive and forget, eh?” That shit just makes me even more spiteful, like wow… you suspected some shit was amiss and now you’re pulling the, “sorry fam. We good?”, card…

The fact that I ultimately feel grateful for the foster system saving my life, cuz I most certainly would have died if I was left with my dad as a baby, I feel I don't reserve the right to say I've still also struggled, just not at the hands of the system, but by family. Speaking from experience as an abuse victim that faced similar "punishments" as the victims here, Ive been crying for help since the age of 9 and no one ever took me seriously. My little sister and I were actively scavenging for food and sneaking them into the house in order to survive and when I told our mom about it she assumed i was exaggerating because I was a kid. When i told my classmates about it they assumed i was lying because they met my father and he "didnt look abusive". I told my cousin, she didn’t believe me. I told my aunt, grandma, and grandpa how much i disliked my father because of his punishments and they told me he is my flesh and blood and i have to love him no matter what. Crazy thing is 14 years later after my mom finally realized that he was a piece of shit and divorced him, they still never took the abuse allegations seriously until THIS YEAR. Cos I know this might be hard for some people to understand, but when you’re already being punished daily and there’s no light at the end to focus on. You just pray that each day is one without more abuse than the day before. When your abuser gets wind of CPS or anything that pains them in a bad light or shining a light on their abusive ways most times is worse than your regular abuse. The family is Mormon, and their image is everything. It’s totally possible the sisters were keeping quite not only out of some obligation to protect Jody from prison, but to not taint their own extremely pristine public image. They all have family channels. All 3 of the sisters. Honestly, CPS should probably be in their houses too, considering this is the type of “parenting style” they seem to not be completely separating themselves from.

I ate once a day for years, my dinners were portioned for me and I was not allowed to have seconds because I was not allowed to gain weight. I was just barely over 100lbs all through high school. I was not allowed snacks. And when I tried to become vegetarian I was starved for days until I agreed to eat meat. I was also forced to do intense workouts daily and was not allowed to stop running to take a break. as someone who comes from an abusive home, I can tell you what happens when CPS gets called
They take the children to a separate room and interview them as to what they experienced and then they talk the child down saying "that's not so bad" and then they warn the parents not to be too obvious or they will have to get involved next time.
they do not want the paper work or headache of actually doing their jobs. they do not believe anything short of actual broken bones is real abuse and they think a slap on the wrist will set all parents straight. they do not realize that for a parent to have gotten this bad even once means they have mentally checked out of being parents and now see their children as leaches. They do not feel remorse and they do not stop when warned.

Half the time they didn't even interact with any of us, just spoke with my parents. I'm not surprised that they failed here, too. As long as a house looks somewhat clean and doesn't smell like actual fecal matter, a child is probably not getting out of an abusive situation and if they do, you'd be surprised to see the parents actually punished.

Because studies have proven that relatively speaking taking a child away from their family does more damage psychological.
I’m not at all defending abuse but it’s a lose lose for the child no matter what. It’s extremely traumatic to take a child away from their home, even if it is abusive. Obviously I’m this case it was necessary but imagine a preteen being placed in a foster home, that would most likely do more l damage to the child than an average abusive house hold. And again, for the cases that involves injury, potential death etc. it’s obviously more beneficial to go to a foster home.
You can’t cure or fix bad parenting, no matter what the child will most likely suffer, CPS tends to go for the lesser evil of just letting the child stay in the abusive household since studies have proven that a child ON AVERAGE will be more traumatized and will have a worse environment

About the sisters and saying they were keeping quiet to protect the kids: the way I interpret this, perhaps for my own sanity, is that they meant it in the same way that it's not wise to tell a friend's abusive SO that you're going to get them to safety. When an abuser gets the idea or knows that their control is in jeopardy, existing under them becomes so much more dangerous. I think the sister's statement means that they were not vocal and using their platforms to bring attention to the fact that they were making attempts behind the scenes to get those kids away from their monstrous parents.

As a former social worker... I think it's too easy. This is why 96% of our budget was spent on removing kids and only 4% on supporting families to become better.
Worse one I've seen is a boy who came through my home. He was removed because he wasn't getting food. His mum actually called CPS for help because she had such severe depression and anxiety she couldn't get to the shop. Instead of helping her get the shopping, which she had money to do, they removed her kid. As a foster carer I ended up helping her to find a lawyer to get him back but it took 6 months and he had been through the dreaded group homes before getting to me. They damaged that boy so much.
As a foster care I can say that foster care is often worse than an abusive home. I take the most difficult kids and I can point to two I've had who haven't been abused by foster carers, their kids or other kids in care. One of my kids had PTSD from the act of being removed.

Also, as someone with major clinical depression who can't go off meds, I can say 100% that at my most depressed I was 100% incapable of looking after _myself_ let alone a child. Depression isn't something that just quickly goes away either. If you can't look after a child that is solely reliant on you, you shouldn't have them in your care.

    • @MrZoomah
      @MrZoomah Před 8 měsíci

@@jessbellis9510 No matter how much money it costs supporting families, it's cheaper than foster care and much cheaper than the torture placements known as group homes. (Which I have worked in for 3 years). Placing a kid in a group home costs $1800 in Australian dollars... per day. That's right. $650,000 per year. That's on the low end too we some estimates pushing $1mil a year. And in over 90% of cases the kid will come out with a criminal record and addiction due to the other traumatised kids they are placed with. (Note, it's similar in the USA but it varies by state)
You could employ a nurse, a psychologist and a chef to spend 8 hours per day with the mum for the same cost as to put a child in a group home. (Not that I think that's what is needed to support a mum) So the cost of a friendly face coming around to drop off some shopping, or to even come around every day to offer some supports is nothing compared to putting a kid in care.
People have to remember that most parents love their children. I've seen parents do amazing things...but only with help. Unfortunately, governments worldwide refuse to do this.
In my area they reduced kids in foster care by 20% by a nurse visiting at risk mum's once a week for the first 6 months of the babies life. Post natal depression also fell in the area. They cut the funding last year.

I believe it. I live in a rural town in PA. I have a piece of ish cousin that’s on government assistance and continues to pop babies out left and right. She makes her 8 year old boy make food and care for the brothers/sisters she does have (she had 6 kids total, two taken from her custody). My wife’s mother has custody of the other two children of hers (one has autism, the other had his arm broken as a baby by his father). She took up for the guy that broke her son’s arm, and still defends him today.
This p.o.s. has since moved on to another guy and popped out some kids to him. One day this guy was shooting a pellet gun in his backyard and left the children unattended. According to the p.o.s. Mother and father, their youngest boy ran in front of the father and the father shot him in the head with the pellet gun. The boy suffered a TBI and is never going to live a normal life without requiring assistance. His brother, the 8 y/o who has to cook and clean for his siblings, witnessed everything and requires extensive therapy. He went from being an ornery, playful boy to being mean and callous. He no longer has a youthful spark in his eyes. Instead, he has cold/dead eyes. The father and mother had the nerve to blame him for not watching his younger brother, and the father is constantly cruel to him as a result. Since then, he has become increasingly violent, and has even pulled knives and other weapons on people. I have no doubt he will turn to drugs and/or be a killer when he grows up.
The father was initially arrested, but somehow got a sweetheart deal in court where he was only sentenced with probation and time served.
CPS has been called on them numerous times since. They have done absolutely nothing to help those poor children. And she continues to collect from government assistance, popping out baby after baby.
I don’t typically support the death penalty or sterilization… but just thinking of her being free while actively ruining her kids’ lives makes me think otherwise.

Sadly, the fact that child protective services brushed it off for that long is really not that bizarre, nor is the fact that she had such a huge following.
I only know who she is because I follow a ton of accounts that talk about childhood trauma, child abuse, gentle parenting, etc. and this woman was called out for being an abuser YEARS ago only to have people insist that they were "too soft" and their children were going to end up spoiled if they thought this woman was abusive. Child abuse survivors can clock these things from a mile away. Remember that people will always show the best version of themselves in public to protect their image. Starving her daughter was the best version of herself.
Also social workers are extremely overworked, underpaid, undertrained people with some of the least consequences for their behaviors. I dont know a single abuse victim who was actually taken seriously by CPS even if they had perfect adult sized hand-shaped bruises on their arms. Social workers abandon hundreds if not thousands of children to die in abusive homes every year because they dont care, dont want to put in the work, and dont have consequences for their behaviors. I once spoke to someone who said their social worker told her "your parents have every right to hit you. If you don't like it, then learn to do what they ask of you."
In most cases, the police & CPS don't actually intervene until the child is dying or dead. I'm glad that little boy was able to save himself before it was too late.

There’s a lack of social workers because of how many cases each person is responsible for (upwards of 100+) with no resources for the workers feeling burnt out/compassion fatigue and the pay isn’t worth the toll it takes on the worker. It doesn’t excuse the behavior and overlooking of cases but there are larger systematic issues contributing to the apathy in workers

I can’t imagine being a child and having to be afraid of the person who’s supposed to love and protect you the most.

Many kids unfortunately are experiencing this right now, hope they will go through this and become what they parents aren’t. I’m trying to be what my father wasn’t, unfortunately in his way he thought me what to not be in life.

You deny your own feelings, creating immense feelings of guilt and shame for simply existing let alone feeling.
Perception is blurred from reality, and until you get out of it- it continues to eat away your sense of self and any potential happiness…. ❤ poor babies, hope they get therapy

It's funny Charlie described "8 Passengers" as sounding like a horror movie because the very first Alien movie was based on a horror short story called "The 8th Passenger."

As a child who grew up in an extremely abusive household, CPS or the police not doing anything is not surprising to me. Their abuse was quite literally broadcasted on camera and they didn't do anything even with the community begging for something to be done. This just goes to show how CPS does nothing for abused children...

as someone who was a victim of child abuse, cps is worthless half the time. and it doesn’t help the situation if the children are scared of the outcome and won’t fess up and they just take that at face value. we had cops coming to our house EVERY NIGHT and they kept us there. holes in the walls and visible broken furniture and these dipsticks were just like “oh yeah that’s fine just go to ur grandmas for the night and your literal nightmare will be out in the morning” our justice system and our system in place to protect children is so badly flawed.

Some parents view kids as some sort of toy, a plaything to mess with. And that is nothing short of fucking revolting. I'm so sorry that had happened to you, I wish someone had tooken action, and I truly wish you and whatever victim was in that hellhole was provided with safety and love.

The sad truth of the matter is, the state doesn't want abused kids. CPS goes after normal families instead because they want healthy young kids to sell to the highest bidder. The state doesn't want to have to care for mentally/physically unhealthy children until they're 18, they want kids they can quickly adopt out and make a quick buck from.

In many places CPS is afraid to do anything because well - look at the comments on videos of CPS removing children in a lot of cases and watch how many people say CPS is evil, CPS is child traffickers, this and that. Add to the fact that the social workers within CPS are woefully overworked, underpaid, barely able to make student loan payments (often they have to have a Master's degree for this absolutely thankless job) and have none of the resources they need to do their job the way it needs to be done. We can't blame CPS for this - society is the one who made CPS as non-functional as it is. We need to blame legislators for not funding them properly and as a society judge them fairly for doing the job instead of berating them no matter what they do.

@@kenirainseeker539 See? My exact point. Apparently the social workers getting paid pennies are now in on this grand conspiracy to steal healthy children from "normal" families? Like...conspiracies have destroyed so many functions of government in this country because people think that when they function poorly it's out of malice.
