  • Restoring natural food chains in the Rhodope Mountains is a flagship project of Rewilding Europe.
Together with partners, Rewilding Europe is creating space for natural processes like forest regeneration, free-flowing rivers, herbivory, carnivory and scavenging to impact ecosystems. Across the continent, the interaction of these processes leads to constantly evolving landscapes rather than fixed habitats - this dynamic is the key to preserving Europe’s rich biodiversity.

How wonderful, I'm a chick forest technician from Montreal! I left my career over disgust of how things work in Québec, best of luck, the world is counting on you!

I live not far away from this area. Can I visit it as a tourist? I mean do you have some organized trips, where we can see those animals, like the horses, zoubrs, etc?

You mention restoring grazers like horses, bison and deer, but will there be any natural predators to control these herbivores?

Humans are also their natural predators.

Bulgaria has bears, wolfs, foxes, golden jackals and the lynx is making a comeback, and of course a lot of praying birds such as the Eastern Imperial, the Golden eagles and many more. It's not the predators that are lacking, though it can always be much better.

Why are you talking about only eastern rhodopes? West rhodopes is the real wild place, with the largest conferous forests of the south balkans , virgin forests both in greek and bulgarian land.

So do you tear down old buildings and make grasslands instead?

Buildings are private property, probably no

No they use old estates or farms that don’t make money anymore and need a new way to make money or just by making unused land into nature reserves. Hope this helps!
